Speculation: The search for a new Head Coach - Rumors and Speculation

Getting outcoached in the playoffs would be the best season this franchise has had in almost 10 years
I really don't think we're that far off from the playoffs in spite of everything we saw this year. We should be looking for a coach that can set the stage for a decade or more of real playoff competition. Not a guy who can take credit for pushing this core over the finish line.

The kids are going to keep progressing, god willing Verbeek will add some real vet talent, and with better systems, Dostal should be able to get us there pretty soon.

Yeah I think we're further along than we look. Honestly I'm open to a pretty wide range of coaches, the only two I absolutely don't want are Quenneville and Torts.

People are high on Woodcroft and maybe he would be good but my spidey senses are going off about him... I don't think this franchise can handle another "fired by the Oilers and hired by the Ducks 1-2 years later" coach.

Fair. I'll add a hard no to Gallant. I keep seeing his name float around in speculation. People don't learn because they don't pay attention.

haven't listened but this is good to hear... i've said it before but it's not surprising that coaches would want to come here. turning a team around does wonders for a resume and we have the talent to do it.

Yeah, I was a lean toward no but have moved into a hard no on him. The guy gets results for a year before his teams get tired of him. I'm not interested in that.

It was actually maddening in Vegas how the year he got fired the team was clearly declining both in on ice play and physical fitness and every post game after a bad loss he'd be grinning like an idiot talking about "I really liked the way we played tonight, we just didn't get the bounces." I'd listen to those interviews thinking "how the f*** did you like how they played? They were awful."

To me that's almost as bad as "I don't know". A Gallant hire could guarantee us a playoff spot next season but every year after that he'll take his foot off the gas to be the players' best bud and let them be accountable for their own execution in practice and with their physical fitness.

It'd be an improvement but it would line us up to quickly need Verbeek's fourth coach in his relatively short tenure.

Assuming the roster stays similar, I actually think we're far from PO, and would be quite surprised if this team made PO next season.

I agree, but the path is there. They are so bad in some areas just minor improvement will make a huge difference.

3rd last in PK%.
Last in PP %.
Last in FO%.

Give them league average special teams and that alone gets them in contention.
The kids getting better and/or adding a top 6 forward, I genuinely think they should be in the hunt.

I'll echo @AngelDuck on the sentiment that the right side of the blue line is an absolute killer. You could sell me almost everywhere else on the roster with continued growth from the core, a new coaching staff and bottom 6 upgrades, but Gudas/Trouba/Helleson at the stages they're at in their respective careers is probably enough to keep them out. Beeker figures out a way to add a legitimate top-4 RHD this summer, I'm willing to entertain the conversation if they can figure out special teams.

I don't think we're that far off, tbh. We just need an offensive-minded coach to help unlock our youths from being throttled down.

Verbeek wants 10 more wins, or 20 more points to become a playoff team. With a better EV offense, we can convert some of those OTL into Wins. Let's say we can nab 6 points out of 10 from OTL into Wins. That would leave us with 14 more points, or seven more wins.

If we go from an abysmal PP unit (last year) to a mediocre PP unit (this year), then we can earn an additional 16 more goals! Let's we earn roughly 70% of the 14 more points we need, which would be 10 points. Now, we're left with finding four more points to get to 100 points.

One thing I hope the coaching will do is to not overwork Dostal. If given proper rest, Dostal can be giving us a far better chance at stealing points.

Also think Anaheim is easily the most desirable place for a coach this year.

This I agree with. Of all the teams looking for a coach, there is no one with a clearer outlook towards success than the Ducks. They have youth and talent at all the major positions and a lot of good prospects. They have mellow owners and a great community with little media pressure. If Verbeek augments correctly, players continue to improve, and the new coach has a functional system, this should be a consistent playoff team in the near future.

Friedman stated similar comments on his podcast today. I think there will be a lot of coaches throwing their hat in the ring.
