Speculation: The search for a new Head Coach - (Ducks to hire Joel Quenneville: Per Dreger)

"I could make an argument" is a generally accepted term to mean "This is in the realm of possibilities". Definitely not an absolute.

And if you think me saying Q being the only candidate to get a reported second interview means nothing is some profound statement then idk what to say. Unless you truly think the media has a 100% clear picture of the progress on interviewing candidates.

*Insert joke about hiring Q and joining the dark side*

You used the word profound, not me. Saying Q getting a second interview means nothing is nonsense though.

If Q is hired, he would hope q turns our current crop into a dynasty is probably the hope right?
I believe if Q is hired (which I think is the most likely outcome, although not set in stone)….. it will be 3 fold.

1) he is the best man for the job (pure hockey reasons), with the team in the stage they are at. He will coincide perfectly with a 2-4 year deal that we make the playoffs a few years, get bounced, learn how to win a series, etc.

2) that 2-4 year window, is the OC Vibe and the remodel of the Pond. While the arena and surrounding area is under construction, Q is hired to help guide the team into their next step. A perennial playoff team. Before a 40 year old coach takes the reigns for a 8-10 year run (hopefully)

3) both of the above, plus Verbeek gets to help his buddy get above 1,000 wins as an NHL coach, and fight off Paul Maurice for 2nd overall for a few more years. This one much less important than 1 and 2, and doesn’t happen without 1 and 2.

But yes, the hope would be Q, would be the next step into turning this crop of players into a dynasty, he helped Chicago do it, and Florida (when he “resigned” which at the time I was 100% f*** him and the hawks, and still am not a fan of it by any means) who had Bennet / Lundell / Barkov / Forsling / Montour / Gudas / Vats / Reinhart / Ekblad / Verhaghe

So yes I would say he’s done it twice, or helped once and did it once. That would be the goal for him and the ducks.

And I want to reiterate, I f***ing hated Joel when this story first happened, but I did absolute zero research into what happened, a man I hated for years was publicly tar and feathered for covering up rape. f*** him, f*** the blackhawks, f*** that POS Aldrich.

What is clear to me now, is he can help the ducks, and my monkey sphere is already full, so after looking at the details, understanding that 2009-2010 was a different universe, not only with the on ice product, but also just the way sexual assault, domestic violence, drunk driver (murder) and all things morally didn’t matter as much back then.

People need to f*** up, in order for the as a society to go, hey that’s wrong, we won’t accept that. Like year 2010, winning mattered over some video assistant sending inappropriate texts to 20 year old Black Aces, plus hanging out at bars outside of work. Especially when it gets brought up in the western conference finals.

That was the era we lived in, man on man sexual assault wasn’t even a thing, especially in a thing like the NHL….

May dad was 15 during the civil rights movement in California, somebody 15 years old growing up in Alabama probably had a much different experience than my dad. Are either one of them evil for existing within the societal norms of their time and place ?

Kyle suffered more than I wish anyone to suffer, Q has been weighed in the court of public opinion and has been found wanting, he has been re-instated by the NHL by completing and being an active participant in seminars, etc. Q will always hold responsibility for his inactions, and should Always feel shame for his inability to do the right thing at the moment of truth. Kyle annd Black Ace #1 will always live with those horrors, so will annd should Q……we may never know the truth of what Q truly knew or didn’t know at the time. But I think he is our next head coach, and I hope he is a changed man for the better, and if he is hired they us the fanbase at least some information on way they perceive him to deserve this job, and I hope he continues to raise awareness and give back to his community hopefully from a place of genuine caring, and not forced detention type attitude.

And no one has to agree with me, I just think we have to start preparing for the fact there is a probability this man is out next HC.

I agree, you always try to surround yourself with bright minds who may have a future in your organization. Some stay and move up, others move on and move up. Some end up going nowhere. But people have speculated since Cro was hired that the "real" plan was for for him to be a placeholder for McIlvane down the road. Now there is again speculation that this next hire might just be a placeholder for McIlvane or even Carle down the road.

My point is that you hire the best coach today based on today's needs. Next time you hire a coach you go through the same process of hiring the best candidate based on your needs at that time. It's just plain silly for all the speculation that this is all a short term setup because Pat knows who he will hire multiple years down the road.

At some time in the future, if McIlvane is deemed to be the right guy for the job at that time then by all means hire him. But no decision today is some 4D level chess move that Pat is playing because he's so much smarter than all the other organizations when it comes to hiring future coaches.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Hiring a coach while considering the future needs of the organization is, to me, the same thing as making personnel moves to try to win a Cup in three - five years rather than winning an extra couple of games the next season. Certainly you'd love to win a couple more games the next season, but if the goal is to win a Cup in the near term, the calculation changes.

Just to reiterate, I don't think that's the only factor in this. Obviously Verbeek is going to want someone highly qualified for the Ducks organization, regardless of their possible tenure. But I think it might be a bonus in his mind if that candidate is not necessarily around for the long haul.

It means nothing more then he got a second interview. People are acting like PV has interviewed the only 3 people that have been reported and Q is the only one to get a second interview.

That guy Murphy who had the original “he’s been offered the job” report just did a podcast with Pierre McGuire and they were asked about Q and the Ducks. Both thought it would’ve been done already if it was gonna happen and then speculated on other landing spots for him.
This wont get near the media attention as the bullshit he put out.

iirc, Cronin was Verbeek's first interview based upon the timeline of articles and tweets. Verbeek still continued his cycle of interviewing other candidates, including Carbery. Verbeek was already sold on Cronin. Carbery got hired before Cronin too.

Similarly, Q is the first interview and his second interview while still in the process of first interviews with other candidates. This process could be part of the PR program of showing Verbeek doing due diligence with a "wide" cast and doing several interviews while everyone barks for a week about Q and then it dies down, which it already has. I am not saying Q will definitely be the HC, but it feels very scripted with how it is playing out to benefit Q being hired.
I would love to see that timeline in articles and tweets. Because I don't remember hearing about Cronin until like the week before he was hired and never saw he was the first person interviewed.

Don't fail me. I'm actually asking for a wall of text this time.

You can do a search b/c I posted it on this thread, iirc, when we were discussing about how Carbery was always going to Washington.

Ok, so if it's Q, no better time to announce it than early on when the playoffs are going. Could have the playoff excitement distract a bit from the hire of Q.

Also gives you the option of waiting to announce until (if) there is some major controversy or something, wait until the next day and then drop the news.

Nah, people are acting like he got a second interview. Which isn't nothing.

It is quite possible that the ducks want to interview an assistant coach who is still in the playoffs. Or maybe they've interviewed that type of candidate. If so, then the ducks might need to wait until that team's season is over to finalize the hire.

No they said once the coach is hired than they will decide about the fates of the current assistant coachea

I meant that the ducks were conceivably interviewing assistants of current playoff teams for the position of Ducks head coach.

That being said, if any of the existing assistants return, that will be a major red flag.
