The San Jose Sharks are horror-bad

Difference is this year injures have decimated our already paper thin depth. Celebrini, Mukhmadullin, Vlasic, Couture, and also likely Borderleau have all been out and would have been regulars to this point. The latter four haven't played a single game this year. That's a lot of talent missing.

Because of this they have to play fringe players that don't belong in the NHL like Benning, Kostin, Rutta, Thrun, and Grundstrom.

Add in the so far terrible recent play from guys like Ferraro and Wennberg and it's no surprise to see them where they are right now.

IT is a rebuild

I was told they are doing player development at the NHL level. Maybe there is some truth to that, but it's appears to be more like tanking to me. GMMG should have put Couture on LTIR maybe Vlasic as well, and use that extra cap room to get some solid NHLers which they sorely need.

He didn't. Probably to continue rebuilding through draft picks, taking the long road.

Who exactly were we supposed to sign in FA? Toffoli is our biggest FA contract ever, and players aren't exactly clamoring to come to the worst team in the league.

It's a rebuild. We are playing around 5-10th worst at 5v5 based on xG stats, and will likely end worst or at best bottom 3 if Celebrini comes back and tears it up. Part of the plan, but the Sharks are hardly horror-bad this year despite the record. They are your run of the mill bottom 3 team missing our best two centers and with a dog shit RD lineup.

Last year's tank job went too far but it did the job. This year they're better but the results aren't there yet. There was no way Grier was going to turn this roster into a fringe playoff team, so solidly bottom 5 will be a big improvement from historically horror bad.

Tldr this thread should die out.

To be fair Couture is done and Vlasic is an AHL level player at this point in his career. Mukhmadulin is an unknown Bordeleau isn't exactly a proven NHLer.

The team is bad because the best player is 18 and injured and Grier intentionally bought vets on small contracts because the Sharks core isn't developed. The team will be bad for at least a few years while Greer continues to add through the draft and/or trade.

So far no one from the past three drafts that MG has been a part of has played on the team (or played very little). It wasn't going to be a dramatic quick fix. The results have been... underwhelming even with low expectations.

At least the Barracuda are good.

How is Will Smith looking? Noticing 0 points in 6 games and starting to be scratched. At 19, feel like sending him down would be better for his development.

Not scratched, load management/development days to lift and work on targeted skills. We'd be seeing the same from Celebrini if he were healthy. Also unless the plan changes, the plan is to keep him in the NHL per GM.

Sharks board has a whole thread on Smith if you want to look. Tldr: he's too weak, a step behind, but there are flashes, he's actually generating good chances but haven't gone in, and he is getting better especially in the last few games with the right linemates to help. Really need Celebrini back so Granlund can be on his wing.
