BUT. It does not mean that he will deliver in the NHL. We have seen young guys tearing it up before the NHL and not all of them become NHL Allstars. I have to say that he is looking more and more like the real deal. He should however hit the gym in the summer and get some more muscle. He needs more strength, and he will probably have to change his playing style in the NHL because he can't be pulling all those fancy moves on NHL Caliber defensemen.

I like the fact that he has started to produce more goals. I'm still a bit puzzled over the fact that Granlund rarely goes 1+3 or 1+1, its often 2+0 or 0+3 or something... :)

I kind of agree. The guy has some serious skills, but all this hype isn't gonna make him look better in his first NHL season. It's tough, he'll have to gain quite a bit of muscle (like most young players) not to mention that he'll be moving to a new country with new stuff to get adapted to. Life outside the rink largely affects your performance on the ice. That said, Minnesota is probably one of the best teams he could end up in for that. I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble but I can kind of recognize this from when Hedman was getting drafted, it was the same kind of hype. You can't really compare positions and so on, but Hedman isn't really a Norris Trophy contender yet, even though he's shown good promise in general. Young players take time to develop so I hope that Granlund won't feel the weight of the world on his shoulders.

This.

No one can argue about his skill and understanding of the game, but life in the NHL is alot different and it will take time to adjust.

All im expecting from the first seasons is some flashes of greatness and if he keeps improving and feels comfortable in NA then we can start talking about maybe having a possible breakout.

Good post.

+1 Spot on.

As for the goals, the first one was a well placed shot from him shooting back against the grain through traffic, the kind of shot that does have a chance to go in or get tipped at the NHL level. The second just looked like a quick and awesome snipe that again is an NHL caliber goal that we can see on a nightly basis. Good to see that he has that kind of shooting ability in his repertoire. Can't wait to see him in the WJCs :handclap:

this part of the post i can agree with. in the WJC we may finally see how Granlund compares to the other top prospects in a small rink.

Anyone from Finland care to explain why the SM-Liiga is on a two week break? For Christmas or a different reason?

Yes. A Christmas break. But is it only two weeks? Anyways, during the break the NT will play in Moscow EHT. Well something like this.

Its the 2nd of 4 tournaments of EHT (Euro Hockey Tour) where 4 countries (Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic and Russia) play and test out their best players playing in europe. When all 4 tournaments have been played, the team with most points gathered from all 4 tourny's wins it.

Preparing for the World Championships is the main thing but the games are often very fast paced good hockey games.

+ it serves as the christmas break

I'd settle with Granlund just becoming a NHL player. Not too long ago there were many who though even that would never happen.

postpone your judgement. the upcoming WJC will tell a lot about his prospects in the NHL.

You're right in everything else, expect the Hedman comparison. Victor Hedman was of the best prospects in his last Elitserien season, while Mikael Granlund is the best player in the league. They aren't really comparable. Who's the last prospect that left to the NHL as the best player in their league (not counting junior leagues)?

Maybe Daniel & Henrik - weren't they co-MVP's in the SEL?

Hedman went to the NHL directly following his draft year though.

? Lindström had 5 points as 22 year old in his last Elitserien season before headin over to NA. Granlund would score that amount of points in a week or two.

Lindstrom played in the NHL this year too, after winning the SEL scoring race last year.

Ville Leino if you count him as a prospect? But maybe Sedins were better comparison.

Officially has a career point-per-game average in the SM-Liiga. He's 19.

Gretzky was a pretty good player as well. What has it gotta to do with Mikael Granlund and this thread?

It probably had something to do with that RNH v. Granlund thread there was some time ago. People *cough* thomast *cough* were saying Granlund is easily the better of the two.

Lol, @ Finns and overhyping
