People are reading way too much into this comment. Sullivan is a dick to the media. He would tell them the entire lineup was a game time decision if the Penguins were on a 10 game winning streak and Sid had 30 goals already.

Isn't that just grace in front of the media? Like, in reverse, how the Colorado coach pumps Georgiev's tires? Or the other day how Lundqvist said Karlsson is OK at defense?

I'm going to say the latter. Sullivan is an ok coach at best, and stopped being effective with the Pens shortly after the cup wins. He should have been replaced years ago.

His system worked with those teams. It doesn't work with the current team and hasn't for years but Sullivan has nothing else.

After seeing Mike Johnston coach the team I'd say a rock could not have coached them to a cup. Coaching matters even for a stacked team. He's a good coach for a certain type of roster but can't adapt. Penguins were the fastest team in the league back then, now they might be the slowest. But he still wants to play the same way.
