Hockey players literally lie down and HOPE that a rock-hard piece of rubber is going to hit them, and that it will only leave a bruise and not break anything. It's considered a skill lol.

Though, this shot blocking stuff is relatively recent. Twenty five, thirty years ago, it was only a select bunch of guys that were known as shot blockers.

When the equipment started turning into armor, jumping in front of a puck became a lot easier.
