Rebuild looking pretty good so far.

Buffalo should have been good if it wasn't for a complete lack of patience.

Look at what that core could have been:
J.Eichel
S.Reinhart
T.Thompson
R.Dahlin
E.Rodriguez
O.Powers
L.Ullmark

1G - Askarov
1C - Celebrini
2C - Smith
1D - Dickinson(?)

They already seem to have most of the difficult pieces to acquire; just need a few more quality defensemen and for their top wing prospects to pan out. Matthew Schaefer would be an ideal get for them at the draft.
Having Dickinson fall all the way into their lap at #11 was always criminal to me.

He was always the best D IMO and should have been drafted in the top 5

I know nothing about him, but Jake Furlong was on Team USA for the WHJC-U20 last year, so I'm guessing he should be on that list.

But yeah, definately the Sharks have some good building blocks for the future.

This is the most pedantic and pointless contribution that could be made to this thread, but Furlong played for Canada.

He's probably a depth D/bottom pairing guy at best though, so I'm also fine with him not being lumped into the prospect core. Canada always likes to take a few role player types into the WJCs, so it's not an automatic badge of authenticity as a key prospect to be named to a team in a supporting role.

Loaded with young talent at every position. Still a long way to go but they just have an "it" factor that the other rebuilding teams don't. If i had to bet on who the next multi cup winner a la Chicago/Pittsburgh/Tampa would be among the rebuilding teams I'd put my money on them. He took a lot of flack but Grier is doing an excellent job.

I think they are a little bit lacking on D prospects even though I love Dickinson’s game. Schaefer would make me change my mind and they may very well end up with him.

No love for Cagnoni, Mukhamadullin or Pohlkamp?

I would love to get Schaefer, but even if we don't, Dickinson is pretty special and we can aim for some solid Defense first guys

I actually wanted the sharks to draft EJ Emery, Ben Danford or Dominic Badinka, but 2 were picked 30 and 31 just before we could grab them and Chernyshov was available and he was projected to go 22-28 and fell to us at 33.

Still would have preferred Badinka with that pick, but Chernyshov was solid value.

At the end of the day, I'm happy with our crop of prospects and graduates like Eklund and Zetterlund.

Those guys have potential I just don’t think they are top pairing type guys. It’s pretty rare for a guy Cagnoni’s size to make an impact at the NHL level on defense. He might be that special case but I have doubts. Mukhamadullin has been worth following but I don’t see him as an all situations type of guy. Not that familiar with pohlkamp. I would just be more comfortable with the rebuild with one more blue chip D man with bonafide #1 potential in case Dickinson doesn’t reach his. Maybe Pohlkamp can be that guy.

You're right to be skeptical. We went through 10 years with essentially no good prospects or outcomes, so now we have a few and we're excited, but it'll be a very rare and lucky hit if Cagnoni, Mukh, or Pohlkamp make it as an actual impact player (and not just replacement level). We really could use another impact D, but we also are probably short another, bigger, scoring winger. That may happen through FA or trade in the distant future. It's going to be a long journey.

Bordeleau is on his way out.

Eric Pohlkamp is having himself a year in Denver. Pohlkamp caught my eye more than Cagnoni at prospect scrimmage.

Underrated.

Thus far, Smith is more comfortable as a winger. His recent point streak came from his switch to wing
He’s 19 and has played C at every level and is only playing wing because we don’t have enough wingers that aren’t terrible for him

The playoffs won't happen for them until their defensive prospects start establishing themselves at the NHL level. They may give Cagnoni and/or Mukhamadullin an opportunity at some point this season but Dickinson may end up forcing himself onto the NHL roster next year the way he's playing in London. Pohlkamp is having a good season thus far in Denver and the Sharks certainly need some youth on the right side of their defense moving forward. It's tough to gauge the timeframe on it though because defensemen are notorious for needing a few seasons to find their game at the NHL level. The forward group is going along pretty well though. Celebrini, Smith, and Eklund are all dynamic young talents. Zetterlund is a little older but plays in a way that helps create a team's identity and will probably be locked up long term after this season. They're going to have guys like Bystedt, Graf, Musty, Chernyshov, and Halttunen with a few others that are under the radar currently push for opportunities too. I think the depth in youth is there up front and they've set themselves up pretty well to transition to younger players sooner rather than later if they earn it. But the blue line is still a long ways off and the likely thing that prevents them from being consistent enough to challenge for a playoff spot.

But it can change quickly if someone shows that they can be productive on the back end.

They have a nice collection of young talent, but that doesn't mean they will develop into a contender. How the players develop and progress, as well as the other moves the GM makes will determine their success. Not all of the players listed in the OP will reach their potential, and others will be dealt to fill holes.

I dunno. When i see the talent of smaller guys like Lane Hutson, Zellweger, Quinn Hughes, I just see it translating on the offensive side.

Size definitely matters. But how many undersized Dmen had the kind of offensive seasons Cagnoni did and then totally flopped at NHL level. Can we name some comparables?

His game is translating so well against big men in the AHL that it gives me hope.

Glad to see Chernyshov finally mentioned - projected 2024 mid/late first rounder who fell to the first pick of the second round. He had shoulder surgery earlier this year and has yet to get back to playing so not on the radar screen for most. He is a bit of a flyer at this point, but if he develops well he has the potential to be a solid contributor. 6’3”, 205# with good speed and hands.

Yeah, and Wetsch is of the same mold. I really like how Grier is building this team .
