Welp, I finished up my time as the Steelers GM as part of the HFBoards NFL Mock Draft. This is who I picked:

#14: Broderick Jones, OT, Georgia

I traded up to pick 14 via trading pick 17 and pick 80. I did this because the top tackles were coming off the board quickly and Jones was the only one left by pick 14. Skoronski, Wright and Johnson Jr were all picked prior to then. While I could have waited and then taken a CB if Jones was picked. JPJ, Banks, Witherspoon all available at 17. I believe I could get a good CB at 32 or 49 while the OTs fall off precipitously after the top 4.

#32: Bryan Bresee, DL, Clemson

I picked him because he has top 10 talent and he has really good work ethic. And I believe if you combine those two along with some proper coaching and good mentorship from Cam, Ogunjobi, even Fehoko, that he can be the next great DL for the Steelers. At the very least, I think he will be good player. And I believe that was worth the pick at #32. And the CB class is so deep, so deep it put my butt to sleep, wait what?

Other players considered: Cam Smith, Emmanuel Forbes, Will McDonald IV, Mazi Smith, Darnell Washington

#49: Cam Smith, CB, South Carolina

Told ya a good CB would still be there at 49. :D I really like Cam's game. He does get over aggressive at times but I just couldn't pass on the talent. And I think he can come in a play day 1 in the NFL.

Other players considered: Will McDonald IV, Julius Brents, Trenton Simpson, Josh Downs

Overall:

I would be over the moon if the Steelers ended up with a haul like this from the draft. I feel like they would have a LT that may be able to start day one or at least work towards it be the starter by midseason or at worst year 2. Bresee can come in an add to the rotation at DL, plus provide a great future as we don't know how many more seasons that Cam has in him. And Cam Smith can come in and start at outside corner on day 1.

That being said, I do feel like a good player is going to be there at #80 and it is a little tough knowing that they would not get to make another pick until #120. Seems rough to go 71 players between picks just to move up 3 picks. Which is why I don't think the Steelers are going to do it. There is a lot of chatter about how the value in this draft is in rounds 2-4, and I think the Steelers will hold fast at #17, and then I could see them trading down from #32 to pick up extra picks. Unless someone like Bresee is there. There seems to be a lot of smoke that they really like him.

Hopefully this is a good omen. I would have went Mazi over Bresee, but you can't lose that one.

This is actually plausible. It's all a guess, I'm still betting on a surprise at like Kancey. Porter is the obvious choice but OT or LB are also darkhorses.

For counter a different route:

I like Kancey a lot as a player, but I don't see his fit here, unless we were going to try something revolutionary at the 5-tech position or have the biggest OLB in the NFL.

With Dupree off the table, how do people feel about drafting a Edge Rusher in the first three picks?

I can’t say I’d be a huge fan of it personally but I don’t know if I’d blame them. They’re never going to get a quality free agent to play backup to Watt and Highsmith, but they just have so many more pressing needs imo.

I’ve seen some people speculating that they may see Leal as more of an EDGE guy at this point.

That's how I've been feeling a lot of the process and I'm debating whether I feel like changing my mind.

Part of it is how strongly I feel about needs. I don't think we're going to fill all the needs this year, so why not attack the draft where it's deep?

But just in terms of needs... Moore and Okorafor need to upgrade themselves or be upgraded on. Slot WR is a wide open battle between fairly unknown guys. You probably don't want Maulet taking the snaps he'll take at nickel CB (unless the plan is move Peterson inside, use Witherspoon more). I think you could actually punt boundary CB one year, but that wastes having Peterson as a mentor. I'd like to do something with SS/ILB.

Once you get into backups, rotational guys... OLB probably matters a little more than DL, but DL feels a little more urgent as Watt and Highsmith have more tread on them than Heyward and Ogunjobi.

I wouldn't be mad about it if they got great value but I'm not sure I'm jonesing for it.

I really think they can basically go BPA minus QB, RB, and IOL. We can basically use everything else in some form or fashion.

Sounds like Dawand Jones pissed off Tomlin:

Not familiar enough with Tony Pauline to say how credible he is.

If this is true, that basically leaves Harrison as the only viable other LT if they miss out on the big three.

Anton Harrison could be better than any of the big 3, but he's going to need some time. I've read some things that have said his current lack of strength makes him unplayable currently in the NFL.

Dawand Jones really f***ed up. I could have absolutely seen us taking him.

Is wright a RT only?

He has played both but he has said he's more comfortable on the right side. Very real potential he comes into the league and is immediately a top 5 RT. There isn't any pass rusher in college football that got around Wright.

I'd take him at 17 and if Harrison is there at 32, I'd consider taking him there. That would give us two very legitimate, franchise bookends. Be done with the OL for 10 years.

My highly preferred option is for them to be aggressive and land one of the big three LTs.

However, there is a scenario where they could land both Jones and Harrison, but I’d hope they move back in that situation.

Jones will likely go mid 20s and Harrison early day 2.

Then get your corner high in the second with 49 + pick acquired in trade down.

Going all in to upgrade both T spots and invest in KP health in that scenario is definitely one I could get behind.

Probably not how they will go, as I suspect based on their 30s that they are going CB if the big three LTs are gone.

What CB are thinking "high in the second"?

Last week has seen a spate of mocks where Darnell Wright is often going before 17. Trading down and picking him up would be a coup, I'm increasingly fine with the idea of just taking him there.

I’d probably be fine with Wright at 17… not sure he gets past the Bucs at 19.

Pats may consider him also I bet.

Really want a LT upgrade, but landing a premiere RT would be a nice consolation prize.

No idea what they do with Chuks, as he’s not exactly a swing man being so ass at LT.

Cam Smith.

So many good corners it’s hard to know where they will go, but he’s the guy I’d love to see after Gonzalez and my golden hope, Witherspoon.

Porter spooks me because he looks stiff on the snaps I watched of him, but lots of experts seem to like him because of his freaky length, so who knows.

I'm kind of starting to think the better play is to dip into the 2024 draft and get more picks in the top 64. I think this draft is special. As long as you're not looking for a LB or S, there is so much talent.

I think 32 is realistically where they will trade down.

While this is technically a first rounder in years past, it’s essentially the first pick of round two which historically gets a ton of calls between the long break between 1 and 2.
