I feel like we (generally) liked Chan and Wiz?

Yeah, they liked Whiz and Mike Mularkey. I can't remember anything about Chan honestly.

After Whiz it's been nothing but vitriol ever since.

I thought Mularkey was an outstanding OC, and was definitely one of those guys who was a better coordinator than a coach. If he stuck to OC'ing, he probably would go down as one of the better ones.

I don't like going out to bat for Canada but you can find articles showcasing all the ways they used Heyward in the Browns game. I don't really fear him not finding inventive ways to use guys in small area plays.

What I fear is him being more inventive than smart; whether he can run a sophisticated pass game that features WRs getting open; and whether he can make the right calls at the right time. The latter becomes radically easier if your players are dominant - that last Ravens game, the OL said they just ran the same call again and again as Baltimore couldn't handle it - but the other two don't.

And most of all, I fear him putting on his best year and getting renewed before crashing back down to mediocre.

The bolded: that's what I was getting at with my earlier comment about him being creative, sure, but can he do it in a productive way?

Last season they had guys open a ton last season just couldn’t get the ball to them. I go back to the burrow interview where he talked about year 3 is when he finally realized nfl open isn’t college open. To throw to spots and know his guys will get there.
The biggest problem last season was terrible redzone offense but they have everything on paper to be top 10 offense next season

Yeah, there were guys open. There were guys Pickett didn't see, or where he didn't anticipate well enough.

But not like wide screaming open. Like the 49ers had at times.

So I misspoke as it was the latter I meant. But the latter is a problem.

Also, yes, that redzone offence is a big one. Absolutely has to be improved. Don't know why I didn't put it in the list.

I'm really excited for Keeanu Benton. He just has this throwback mindset of how football is played. I can see both him and Herbig being the shot in the arm. What I didn't realize was how close Benton and Herbig are. They are really close according to Benton.

Really cool peak behind the curtain at these kicking camps. Alfredo looks like he has a boot, that last one in the kickoff was maybe a 59 yarder?

Very unlikely he makes our roster with Boswell being a top 5 paid kicker and it would create 2m in dead cap if cut, but maybe he shows out in camp and he gets a call if Boswell gets hurt again.

Also neat seeing an NFL GM be fluent in Spanish.

Punters, not so much kickers, I think should be treated like 4th line NHL'ers. Never give them a long contract. They should feel the heat always.

I'd look into upgrading both positions this offseason. The amount of time Boswell is injured for being a kicker is laughable, IMO.

Post bye was better, sure, but even then the Steelers were only a hair over 20 ppg in their final 9 games.

Crazy stats from 2 seasons of Canada:

- Have only hit the 30 point mark twice in Canada’s 2 years (both losses).

- 20 points or more in less than half of (16 of 34) games.

- 61 offensive touchdowns in 34 games is pathetic.

- 1 offensive touchdown from outside of the redzone last year. Absurd. 6 the season prior (2021). For comparison to the top teams in the league there, the Chiefs had 9, Eagles 17, Bills 15, 49ers 16, Bengals 12 in the 2022 season alone.

- 2021: 29th in yards per play (4th worst). 2022: 27th in yards per play (6th worst).

Combine with the eye test and my faith in Canada is a hard 0/10. Could not be lower. Hope he proves me wrong.

I’m just trusting the brass and OMO good vibes about JPJ - along with the belief PP can coach him up.

JPJ and his dad really wanted him to be a Steeler, and the guy has a chip on his shoulder now, so it would be nice if it works out for him.

Didn't they set some sort of record of 20 games without an opening drive TD?

Yeah, they liked Whiz and Mike Mularkey. I can't remember anything about Chan honestly.

Chan was universally lauded. I mean he turned Kordell into a MVP candidate. Cowher begged him to not take the Cowboys job bc he knew it'd be a bad landing spot.

I haven't been this excited for a Steelers season in a really long time. This draft moved the needle in a really big way, coupled with the return of CA3, this rookie class could push this team forward. I am not buying these doom and gloom projections for the Steelers. I think they will be a 9-10 win team barring any huge injuries. The current issue facing the team is if one guy goes down on defense, we are f***ed.

I hope the package details never come out, because I think people are going to lose their minds with what was offered.

I cant imagine it was more than a 2nd swap and someones late 3rd early 4th.

Maybe more but it didnt seem like anyone was chomping at the bit.

The next picked got moved (10 spots) for 10 spot swap in the 3rd and a 3rd next year.

They did. You can be 99% that Tennessee made the same offer to the Steelers as they did to Arizona to trade down, and there was a rumour about Vegas offering pick 100 to move.

I don't recall anyone feeling like we had to take those deals. I'm a Porter-skeptic who wanted to move down, and I don't feel like we did anything other than turn down solid respectable deals.

Yeah, I wouldn't have moved down for pick 100. THat being said, I would have taken Branch, but I get the Porter pick.

He used to be a pretty big name. No clue how good he is anymore but I don’t think it hurts to just throw bodies at the LB position and see if anything sticks.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind a bit more veteran depth at either inside or outside LB. I do have hopes for young LB's like Robinson at ILB and Herbig at OLB or ILB but I'm not sure I want to put all my eggs in that basket just yet. Adding some veteran insurance is probably good. It also would be nice to try to get ahead of these kind of issues instead of having to send late round picks out to acquire guys like Malik Reed late in camp every year.

Couple nice hits from Kwon Alexander last season.

In total agreement about investigating Alexander and casting a wide net at the ILB position. Just pointing out that they already brought two ILBs in as free agents in Holcomb and Roberts.
Yeah, I could see where that may be an issue for Alexander if he wants to start. I think Holcomb is a lock to start. Roberts is intersting. He's more limited. He will definitely play some on running downs and against run heavy teams and I assume he will also start but who knows. Maybe they would let Alexander compete with him. Improves the depth either way if he signs.

It seems like Alexander is actually still pretty good in coverage which is something that’s really lacking from that room at this point.

I still have deep concerns about the middle of the defense. Meaning the ILB and Safety spot from a pass coverage standpoint.

I doubt the packages offered were anything I’d flip tables over… not for some sick f*** who puts mayo in their coffee.

I was hoping for Branch, but I assume they are comfortable with Neal. Tomlin also basically said he couldn’t live with himself if he didn’t bring JPJ home (which bothers me when I think about it too much).

I already highly suspected Tomlin felt that way, so deep down I knew JPJ was going to be the pick after he slipped out of day one.

If I had my wish I’d rather they drafted a shut down corner than a versatile safety, so I’m doing my best to be positive JPJ can be that guy.

Given he only got about 50% of snaps last season and it being this point of the team building cycle, I reckon Alexander has probably had to say goodbye to ideas of starting without passing guys in the depth chart and there's few shallower than the Steelers'.
