Porter JR is gonna wear #24 in honor of Ike Taylor. I’ve been saying he’s basically another Ike, so I’m happy to see this.

Interesting. Here's to hoping his hands are better than Ike's.

I do know JPJ didn't have a ton of picks in college (only 1) but that may not necessarily be because of bad hands. We'll have to wait and see. Ike just flat out could not catch a football. It was that simple. He was very good in coverage at his peak. It's interesting to think how different Ike's legacy as a corner here would be if he had even just decent hands.

It is an interesting topic - Ike’s legacy.

Woodson was my favorite player when I was a kid and the only jersey I ever owned.

Yet he never won any SBs with the Steelers while Ike was instrumental in bringing two Lombardi trophies back to Pgh.

Woodson was an all time player because not only was he a great cover guy, he made big plays… sacks, strip sacks, FR, FF, picks, pick sixes…

If Ike made more splash plays he likely would have been whispered in the same breath as Woodson, but making those game changing plays is what made Woodson so unique.

If JPJ has a career like Ike's, that's pretty damn good for a 2nd rounder.

On the topic of Ike, I believe he did play RB in college. It always blew my mind that they never tried him as a KR. Instead, we got the likes of Ricardo Coclough fumbling away games...

1. Pittsburgh Steelers

Favorite pick: Nick Herbig's NFL future is likely at off-ball linebacker because he's undersized by NFL edge rush standards. That said, he's a physical, twitchy, bendy high-motor football player. Smart, stout at the point and always near the ball, Herbig's athleticism shines on tape. We expected him to go two rounds before he did.

Best value: Cory Trice excels as a tackler and is an asset in run support. At his size, his NFL future may be at safety, or as a hybrid chess piece. He can sometimes get too handsy in coverage downfield, but you can coach that. You can't coach his size (6-foot-3 and 206 pounds) and speed (4.47 40, 6.70 3 cone, 4.06 short shuttle).

Most surprising pick: Darnell Washington was considered a top-45 pick throughout much of the draft process, but some medical concerns saw his stock take a hit. Put another way: the Steelers landed one of the freakiest athletes in this entire class -- as well as its best blocking tight end -- at the end of the third round.

Just to give some perspective on Woodson vs Ike with splash plays:

Over Ike's career he had 14 picks, 3 FF, 2 sacks and 4 FR. Total of 12 years with the Steelers.

During Woodson's peak over just a three year span from 92-94 Woodson had 16 picks, 9 FF, 11 sacks, and 3 FR.

So Woodson basically smashed Ike's entire career splash plays in just a three year span.

So I think it's safe to say that lack of splash plays are why Ike never made a Pro Bowl/All-Pro team and is never mentioned in rarified air with Woodson, despite winning 2 Sbs.

Woodson was also a world class speedster that returned kicks.

If anything, JPJ better have softer hands than Ike. Ike could've been borderline HOF if he'd held onto half the stuff that hit him square in the hands

Woodson vs. Ike isn't even a comparison.

Woodson is a HoFer, 11x Pro Bowler, 6x All Pro, DPOTY, 10th overall pick, and even though it wasn't with the Steelers, a Super Bowl Champ.

Ike was a 2x Super Champ, but he never even made a Pro Bowl and was a 4th round pick.

Still, even with his stone hands, Ike locked down his side of the field for basically a decade. It would be a major win if JPJ was as good as Ike.

JPJ has a ton of support in this organization. Every single person is vocally in his corner. He has a mentor in Peterson that was talking about how much he wanted to play with him before Porter was even drafted.

JPJ is not going to fail for any reason than his own shortcomings. I still rather would have had Branch, but you cannot ignore the familiarity with Porter being a huge positive in taking him.

Ike would have been a 5-7 int CB a year if he could catch a ball. If he did that, he probably would have been a HOF fringe guy. He had two of the worst hands of any DB I have ever seen. Great cover man though and tough as hell.

I don't know if we will see another Woodson. He was so far above his competition athletically, that margin just doesn't exist anymore. It's like Gretzky - the bottom tier NHLer is a 1st line player in the 80's. All 32 backup goaltenders start in the 80's.

My main hope is that he keeps those hands from clutching and grabbing himself to a record number of PI penalties. If so he could be an excellent shut down corner.

I think that’s the crust of it all - if Ike made more splash plays it would have gotten him voted into several pro bowls, maybe an all-pro season or two, and then he would be talked about with the Woodsons and Blunts, kind of like Polo is.

Probably so, but even as is, he was a damn good player for the Steelers.

He was, I just think he doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

He is likely a top 5-6 DB in franchise history.

Blount
Woodson
Butler
Polo
Shell/Ike
Lake

He’s pretty easily their fourth best CB of all time.

So ya, we can only hope JPJ becomes like Ike.

I'm just gonna repost Brugler's weaknesses for Jones since we were discussing that Mike Martz (who I think is a bit of a hater) clip:

WEAKNESSES: Lacks the height/length that NFL teams desire at the position … needs to continue maturing his technique … will lose his bearings and base when his upper half overextends … finds himself jarred at contact when he gives up his chest … needs to do a better job breaking contact versus long-arm moves … his hands are quick, but they land outside when he has too much of a wind-up in his attack … will sacrifice his body control at times in the run game … missed the start of his first season in Athens because of a dirt-bike accident (July 2020) … doesn’t have versatile experience at right tackle or on the interior.

Regarding when he'll start, I'll just echo what others have said, he's going to have to earn it. He's still very raw (fewest number of college snaps among FBS offensive tackles in this class) but Dan Moore Jr isn't exactly this insurmountable challenge. I'm not going to compare it to the KP8-Trubisky camp battle as there are just vastly different rubrics for those two positions.

We were extremely fortunate with injury luck on the offensive line last year as I believe all 5 starters played a full 17 games, I just can't see that repeating this year. I would expect Broderick to sit until DMJ or Chuk miss time, after which he won't relinquish the starting job.

Minor note on the Tackle situation - I think Meyer's scheme is a little unusual and it takes players a bit of time to adjust? Seemed that way with Daniels and Cole last year.

I saw a blurb on Meyer's scheme and it did seem pretty challenging.

Meyer: "See that defender in front of you. Move him back off the line and dont let them hit the QB"

I'm really intrigued by Nate Herbig at G. He was projected to be a mid-round pick in 2019 but completely bombed his combine. Watching his interviews he looks and sounds like he's in another dimension of stoned, which I guess is what happens when you grow up in Hawaii. He's a big guy - long arms, big hands. He's just really over weight. He plays around 335 at 6'3, and he really should probably be around 315-320. He probably could be pretty good if they can get him to drop a few pounds.
