Draft Scouting Report:

Rating:
80.50 (Long-term)

Pro Comparison: Antrel Rolle

Accolades:

  • 2022: Honorable mention All-Big Ten (coaches)
  • 2022: Team-high 10 pass breakups
Summary:

Cory Trice excels as a tackler and is an asset in run support. At his size, his NFL future may be at safety, or as a hybrid chess piece; he can sometimes get too handsy in coverage downfield, which will be penalized at the next level.

Strengths:

  • Can manhandle WRs at line of scrimmage because of size
  • Will he have to move to safety because of frame?
  • Shows ability to play tight coverage vs. quick slant and then out-physical WR at catch point
  • Shows ability to come off man in zone coverage and make play on routes in front of him
  • Packs punch as a tackler
  • Asset in run support because he's not afraid to lay the wood vs. RBs
Weaknesses:

  • Can get handsy beyond five yards
  • Should be better about getting off blocks because of size; needs to show more urgency
  • Can struggle to stay in phase at top of in-breaking routes
Combine Results:

  • 40-Yard Dash: 4.47 seconds
  • Vertical: 35.5 inches
  • Broad Jump: 11 feet, 0 inches

Spencer Anderson. But he's from Maryland so obviously nepotism is involved. I'm sure Mike Tomlin knows his family and all the cousins and so on and so forth.

Draft Scouting Report

Rating: 74.64 (Chance to start)
Pro Comparison: Jamil Douglas
Accolades:
  • 2022: Three sacks allowed on 515 pass block snaps
Summary:
Spencer Anderson is a lineman with exposure to tackle but is best suited playing on the interior. He lacks the arc speed to challenge NFL rushers and is susceptible to motion across his face. Anderson plays with a strong base and does a good job of adjusting his hands when engaged. He has a good understanding of angles and sealing run lanes. His lateral mobility and recovery speed will present challenges.
Strengths:
  • Positional flexibility having played inside and out
  • Plays with a strong, sturdy base
  • Does a good job of re-adjusting his hands once engaged
  • Good upper body strength
  • Good understanding of blocking angles and sealing run lanes
Weaknesses:
  • Struggled with oversetting when asked to play on the edge
  • Lacks arc speed to challenge NFL rushers consistently
  • Average lateral and recovery speed

Corey Trice, Brugler had a top 100 grade on him. 9.65 RAS

Well Andy should be happy with the athleticism of those two 7th rounders.

Anyway, pretty happy. Believe the analysts and that's a fantastic draft. It was certainly happy in terms of moving around, playing the board, and targeting team wants.

Rating: 60.76 (Role player)

Pro Comparison: David Fales

Summary:

Tanner Morgan throws with touch and anticipation. He is a great leader and communicator with ample playing experience. Morgan is known to get jittery feet in the pocket but always keeps his eyes downfield. He has zero mobility and below-average ball placement.

Strengths:

  • Throws with touch and anticipation
  • Great leader and communicator with ample playing experience
  • Keeps his eyes downfield when pressured
Weaknesses:

  • Jittery feet in the pocket
  • Zero mobility
  • Below-average ball placement

Omar Khan said it was worth it for the Steelers to recoup the fourth-round pick they traded to move up for Broderick Jones because Darnell Washington was the top guy on their board for that third-round choice they got back anyway. They were surprised he was still there so late.

Every team says that. Or some derivation of the idea.

This is the first time that I believe it.

if he was surprised he was still there, then why trade back in the first place? sounds like someone's not being honest.

Day 1: The Steelers jump up three spots, giving up a fourth-round pick to make sure they land the offensive tackle they wanted. Jones impressed as a pass-blocker in 2022, earning a 84.1 PFF pass-blocking grade and allowing just nine total pressures from 470 pass-blocking snaps.

Day 2: Pittsburgh takes PFF’s CB4 and 21st-ranked prospect to open up Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft. Porter wins with his length. The former Nittany Lion’s 34-inch arms make it easy to disrupt his opponent at the catch point and line of scrimmage. Porter’s 40% forced incompletion rate in 2022 led all Power Five cornerbacks.

The Steelers take a top interior defender that can line up in the A and B gaps, with the Steelers able to move Cameron Heyward, Larry Ogunjobi and Benton across the interior. Benton will help a Steelers run defense that struggled in 2022 up the middle, with a strong 10.5% run-stop win rate in 2022.

The freaky Georgia tight end’s slide is over. Pittsburgh grabs the 6-foot-8, 272-pound Darnell Washington to continue their strong 2023 NFL Draft. He has a strong resume in the ground game, as his top-five finish among Power Five tight ends in run-blocking grade in 2022 proves, and is a mismatch weapon as a receiver.

Day 3: The Steelers’ incredible draft continues. Herbig played on the edge at Wisconsin but figures to be more of a tweener in the NFL, and that’s likely why he wasn’t a higher pick. He knows how to rush the passer, though, as he won 23.9% of his pass-rushing snaps in 2022 and earned a 91.1 pass-rush grade.

Ranked 77th on PFF's big board. Price is a physically imposing corner at 6-foot-3 who is extremely aggressive at the line of scrimmage and tackles well.

Anderson is the only pick by the Steelers where the player has been outside the top 80 of the PFF big board. Anderson produced a 79.8 PFF pass-blocking grade in 2022 but struggled as a run blocker.

DRAFT GRADE: A+

I'm not going to so deeply analyze a 4th round pick. To me, Herbig looks like a MLB with blitz potential, just like Sanders did. We will see what they do with him. Regardless, he was one of the best disrupters in college despite all the knocks against him and he was far an away the top player left on the board when we were picking.

This draft was the best draft we have had since 2017.

I think if he ever makes it as a starter its more likely inside, but he should be able to rotate in at olb for the time being

A guy with that kind of motor, dive and with a 'they don't respect me' chip on their shoulder at the very least should be a special teams demon.

A guy who disrupts like that is probably going to see patterns quick. That matters a lot.

Also I'm hoping last year was our best since 2017.

Excellent draft, great few days here in Pittsburgh with how the Steelers did and the pirates. Some good stories there as well, banner weekend for Pittsburgh sports! And the Penguins were nowhere to be found.

Penguins banked three Cups in this Era.

They have zero to prove.
