Have to hope his knee holds up or the Steelers know something about others don't, obviously the potential is there.

Maybe having the guy he's used to blocking next to already on his way to the team might help the transition.

Wonder if they actually start running two TE sets more often. Wonder how they plan to rotate Pat, Heyward, and this guy.

I wanted him at 32 long ago....lol

My philosophy which maybe the Steelers took note. You get KP 2 TEs as safety blankets. And bolster the line/run game.

Couldn't script it better.
The value that Omar Khan has extracted is something that I'm not used to. I liked Kevin but this is pretty damn impressive for a first draft. The trade he made last year to get 32 overall was impressive also. Again extracting incredible value. And then what he did in free agency no complaints there either. Guy knows what he's doing.

If nothing else Najee Harris has to be thrilled running behind the Jones and the rest of the line and then Washington added to that.
And Kenny Pickett reaps the benefits as well. He'll have a much better line to play behind now.

Heyward isn’t a TE. He is an H-back.

This dude could never be a real pass catcher but if he’s a unique weapon as essentially a movable OL this is great.

Could end up a complete nothing pick but what a fun guy to take a chance on.
That’s where I’m at. Just block the f*** outta people and do occasional jump balls in the endzone. He doesn’t have to become some amazing pass catcher, we have Muth and Heyward for that.

Good analysis here.

Says what I was thinking. Great blocker to start. Basically, a second tackle, and one with a nasty streak that loves to nail people. The pass catching is a bonus.

So, absent injury the floor is very solid. Just for blocking.

But if he can pull in end zone passes then you have something special.

Quoting that Brugler writeup but thats the leanest 270lb TE I've ever seen haha. Give him a year and he could bulk up to 285.

Yeah I think you're selling him kind of short. He is very good athleticism, can move people and has good hands. I love this pick relative to where we picked them.

I'd also point out that while Washington mightn't be a receiving weapon, he might. He's raw but he has shown hands and obviously he's fast.

Kelee Ringo must be regretting coming out at this point and he must have gotten some real bad advice. He still had two years remaining.

Tbf nobody called this. I'm thinking he must have had awful interviews.

Washington’s greatest value will be in the red zone for this team.

Considering their red zone issues last season, having a freak matchup nightmare like him in both the passing and running game, could be a marriage made in heaven.

Of course Canada…

93. Steelers: Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia

Grade: A-

Tall, thick, young ultra-powerful TE. Will be the 6th OL when he's on the field. That good of a blocker. Low-volume receiver in college but flashed bulldozer YAC talent and has an enormous catch radius though there are some drops on film. All-Pro upside.

R3 (93) PITTSBURGH STEELERS (VIA SF): TE DARNELL WASHINGTON, GEORGIA

Pick Grade: Very Good

The freaky Georgia tight end’s slide is over. Pittsburgh grabs the 6-foot-8, 272-pound Darnell Washington to continue their strong 2023 NFL Draft. He has a strong resume in the ground game, as his top-five finish among Power Five tight ends in run-blocking grade in 2022 proves, and is a mismatch weapon as a receiver.

93. Pittsburgh Steelers (from Panthers through 49ers): Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia

  • Grade: A+
The Steelers get an absolute steal in one of the draft’s top tight ends who fell to them. He can be a strong complementary run blocker to Pat Freiermuth before giving them some literally massive upside as a receiver to prompt more usage of 12 personnel to help Kenny Pickett.

Kinda hard to cover a 6'8 Reciever no doubt. This was my dream pickup.

Pickens - deep threat
DJ - Possession Intermediate
Robinson - slot
Austin - Gadget

Friar and Washington playing as 2 TE sets. Good luck covering them.
