I thought this was the funniest part of the article:

By the way, despite the fact that Big Ben has won two Super Bowls, there are still plenty of Steelers fans out there who feel as if he still needs to prove something to them. Sure, he won two Super Bowls, but he wasn't lunchpaily enough! If you win a Super Bowl in this town, it does nothing to keep the fans from complaining. They make Alabama fans look reasonable by comparison. There's some kind of mythical unicorn Steelers quarterback these people are looking for, who wins six titles, puts in Ironman time at defensive end, and can build a new patio with his bare hands because DURRR WE'RE HARD WORKIN' FOLK DURRRRRR.

Spaeth will miss 8-10 weeks due to foot injury.

Paulson is having a strong camp, much better than last season. Probably will be a starter if Miller can't play.

Good thing Paulson has exceeded expectations thus far, because out depth at that position is nothing short of sad. Still miffed we didn't at least throw a late pick there.

That's a rough injury time for Spaeth...he's not good enough to carry for a third of the season without being able to play, especially with Miller out at the start of the season.

edit: Bell as 5th stringer tonight? Dejan said he's in street clothes.

Well that zaps the most intriguing reason to watch the game.

I'll watch for Jarvis...gotta love that 95 number on him. For once Pirates regular season baseball takes precedence over Steelers pre-season.

I guess my CT NBC station finds entertainment tonight or whatever it is to be more ratings worthy than a Giants game. The NY NBC station's arent in HD for me. It's more annoying than normal because I am having a hard time making out numbers and names for all the more unfamiliar new guys on the team.

What about David Johnson? I thought he played tight end as well as some fullback.

Stephens-Howling running very well tonight.

So glad we were able to get Manny Sanders back. Imagine Cotchery being our number 2? Yea that wouldn't be good.

Could be in for some 33-30 games. If the o-line stays reasonably healthy, I think they'll score some points. I am suspicious of the D. William Gay . . . .I thought his last season with the Steelers would be his last.

Dwyer and Worilds proving that they aren't starters. A shame Bell couldn't play tonight.

Stephens-Howling looked good, Dwyer did not. Worilds...meh up until the two stupid penalties...include the penalties and that was awful.

Jones will have that starting job locked up before long.

The 'good' thing about Bell not playing out of precautionary reasons is that tells you something about how highly the Steelers do think about him. If he was competing for a job I think it's safe to say he'd play the one quarter he was supposed to. That job looks to be as safely Bell's as QB is Ben's right now.

That pick the Steelers used on Landry Jones would have been MUCH better served for drafting a tight end or a tackle.

Jones was an incredible value at that slot and, injured now or not, we still have Heath Miller and had a ton of holes elsewhere. Two TEs is a luxury we couldn't afford when we had a desperate need at linebacker.

We spent high draft picks on offensive linemen at will the past couple years...time to let them play instead of trying to replace them already. Nobody should expect that line to be perfect from the get-go considering the lack of experience on it...but the upside is huge and they will get better as the season goes on*.

*As long as they can actually stay healthy for once.

Jones was just such a slam dunk obvious pick that I can't fathom anyone complaining about it. He was a top 10 talent in the draft at a position of dire need. But then again as that Fangraphs article showed, Steelers fans will find a way to complain about anything.

If this was in response to my post, did you confuse Jarvis Jones with Landry Jones?

I saw Jones and zoned in there, but that wasn't just in response to your post - it's something I came across on boards and Twitter all night, and they were talking about Jarvis.

Landry...eh. We needed to draft a QB in the middle rounds. You can argue about who we drafted, but it would have been inexcusable to go through this draft without a QB and when you're talking 6th or 7th round you're talking potential 3rd stringers 99.9% of the time. Landry Jones was the last QB left in the draft with the potential to be a legitimate back-up, the next QB off the board came 3 rounds later, someone I'm very high on and very familiar with - Brad Sorensen of Southern Utah, has similar upside to Jones but a far smaller floor. Jones was really the last option there, which is what led to him being slightly over-drafted. Considering who we took in the 5th round (CB Terry Hawthorne) I don't think anyone would really have batted an eyelash had they swapped draft positions.

As it stands right now I'm very happy with the Steelers' picks through the first 5 rounds...they were all at positions of need and the value on most was really good. I still would have taken a flyer on a TE in the 6th round, though.

On an unrelated note: I sent out invitations to those in last year's HF Penguins Board Moonlighters league before I left for Montana without posting it here (literally right before I left) and invites to those in last year's would have been sent. So far we only have a couple members signing up from last year. If you're interested in a live-draft, 12 team, standard Yahoo league with your peers here post in the thread or PM me and I'll send you the information.

Weekly users only, please. It's not too much to ask to set your rosters once a week.

edit: Actually just PM me with your email address and I can send an invite.
