Imagine all this semantic argument over misdefining an action RPG.

Skyrim, Dark Souls, Kingdom Hearts, Fallout, a good chunk of Final Fantasy games, The Witcher 3. None of these games are strictly RPGs. They're action RPGs.

This looks like what I wanted Fallout 4 to be. I got to the bit in that game where you have to definitively pick your side and just straight up quit.

I think I might pick up an old second hand Xbox and give this a crack in gamepass.

Game pass only a dollar for a month, no reason to pay 80 bucks for this game. Unless you absolutely want to support this developer like crazy

I suppose it was my bad in assuming they understood what was being discussed.

You can do that though, you can kill or side with quite a few characters.

But you're right, it doesn't affect the actual plot (the main plot at least, outside of the final ending), however, by that definition, 90% or rpgs, dont qualify as RPGs. Its a ridiculously strict requirement to classify something as an rpg.

That's because the term RPG gets used as soon as there are menus in a game.

If it don't have turn-based combat, it ain't a RPG.

Why yes I was raised on consoles, why do you ask? ;)

I get why games like this are called RPGs...but I'll still never feel comfortable calling stuff like this or The Witcher as the same genre as Chrono Trigger or Persona. Oh well, western RPG it is.

Get better at genre names, video games.

Either way I'm excited to actually use my XBox to play a game for once.

It’s a pet peeve of mine and just as worse when talking about music.

“This is cold wave not dark wave”

Just shut up and let’s talk about the actual music.

You're lucky to grab it like this. For a long while, it was only a 10MB download . It became a full pre-load either yesterday or Monday.

I did Gamepass on PC so I can play this for cheap. I'd rather do it that way than give money to Epic :).

So if I'm understanding this correctly Epic but exclusivity for their storefront but since this is also on Xbox you can install the 'Xbox live' store on your PC and play it their with their game pass thing?

This made me look into XBox game pass for PC, and wow, it is such an amazing deal. There are so many games on there that I want to play.

Yeah it is super cheap for a lot of games that I never played that I had been wanting to and they seem to have deals quite a lot on the monthly game pass.

Oh geez LOL
Yeah I'll absolutely take it. Really glad that I found out earlier and not before and not tomorrow either. This felt like absolute perfect timing.

Just a quick note for PC users - apparently Game Pass is still on for $1 for a month. At least, that's what I got.

$1 to rent Outer Worlds seems like a great deal.

This is the beauty of paying zero attention to previews and hype. Had no idea about this game but now I am pretty excited for it. Bonus!

The term RPG comes from Dungeons & Dragons which predates video games. People called Final Fantasy an RPG because it sort of made sense: medieval setting, you level up, turn based combat etc...

Main issue is that there is no role playing in JRPGs. I'd hope that, since 1987 was a while ago, that people hadn't clung to old and nonsensical names but hey, what do I know? Most outlets call Witcher 3 an RPG so clearly, my reasonning is baseless

Strictly speaking, you play a "role" in any video game that you play.

So the RPG label in my mind is applied more so in terms of the D&D foundation, which implies the creation and assumption of a character from a variety of classes and abilities, with experience and leveling up, equipment and gearing, and combat.

Some games have some or all of those elements which makes things more confusing.

You don't level up, but there is a variety of gear.

There is only one class, but you get to choose abilities.

I knew about it but just had no interested in it and then I heard the Giant Bomb guys going off this week about how good it is and I got really hyped for it.

Was on call this week, so I only work a half day today. Gonna get home and get in a good 3-4 uninterrupted hours before the wife and kids get home.
