I think we're putting too much weight in small sample sizes. Can't wait to see who will be the flavor of next week.

Pretty sure it's fine to just acknowledge who plays well and criticize who aren't. Nobody called Roy as coach of the year or for Varlamov to be a Vezina winner. But that't the purpose of a board....to call it as we see it. Strangely, nobody had problems elevating Lars Eller to god status....and that's fine with me. 'Cause that's what he looks like...now.

Pretty interesting to see what Allaire will do with Varlamov. Pretty good so far. We'll see later on.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Varlamov had good seasons with the Avs before Allaire was hired.

Eller's emergence is hardly spontaneous.

So the last 20 games of last season mean nothing?

A few of us agree to temper the expectations with Eller...but that's not a fair comparison, at all.

Back to the topic of rookies...I was big on Hertl but there was legitimate concerns about his skating..I don't see those concerns anymore. I wasn't sure about picking him ahead of Teravainen (who will also probably be awesome)...but what a start for the Czech.

Some 2-1s tonight but still some high scoring games elsewhere. Will be interesting to see if the changes to the goalie pads will result in overall higher scoring.

I welcome it. I mean, smaller goalies will suffer more and ours is big. Goals are fun.

Goals are fun...but personally, for me they are more fun when they are hard to get. I'm a soccer fan afterall. I'm worried the obsession with increasing scoring will once again make hockey like basketball where momentum matters more than the actual score at any point beyond the last 5 minutes. I watch hockey for both offense and defense.

Have no fear. I still doubt the average scoring in this league will be higher than 3.5/game

I actually watch hockey MORE for the defense than offense. And no matter the pad size, great D is great D, lousy D is lousy D and one will get scored on more than the other. Actually the lesser pad size will make the great D even more impressive, and expose lousy D even more, because you can get away with less on defense and you gotta be tighter knowing that your goalie is not as teflon as he used to be, I'm TOTALLY for that.

And for the VAST majority of people who watch Goals, Hits & Fights; well, there's more to watch for them.

Actually the changes hurt bigger goalies more than smaller goalies.

Great D is a thing of beauty. Even in NFL football, which I hate watching because of the commercialism, seeing a well executed defensive scheme is just electrifying for me.

Hockey is best when the goalie looks hard to beat and the defenseman appear to be 7' behemoths who don't give an inch.
