OT: The Other Sports Thread Part X

"I puke in your general direction." Movie quote taken a bit too far, maybe.

To say I'm still walking on air over this win is an understatement. We never beat Bama while I was a student. I know the strip was rocking.
Adz, you are the one reason I can accept this result with some equanimity, because I knew it would make your week. Now, next weekend will be a different story.

I'm interested to see if this is the beginning of a decline for Saban. You often see programs start to slip as coaches start pushing up in years.

I also wouldn't want to be the defensive coordinator either.

Saban is in his 70s. It’s always possible his coaching prime passed quite awhile ago. College football favors the rich and it’s really easy to mask any type of decline by having an amazing coaching staff. Oh and it doesn’t hurt to always get top end recruits year after year.

Here’s an interesting what if…

What if Saban had no desire to go to the NFL? Bama was in a coaching carousel similar to most schools when he landed in their lap after failing with the Dolphins. I doubt he would have been the Bama head coach and given the success he had at LSU, and given the loyalty he has shown Bama, I wonder if he would have just stayed at LSU and we would be talking about them as having the best stretch of college football success.

Even bigger what if is what if Saban and the Dolphin's doctors signed off on Drew Brees? The ripple effect on that would have changed the NFL and NCAA

The lack of discipline is what has been most surprising to me from Bama this year. Two of the most penalized games under Saban have happened this season. I also think Saban really dislikes the NIL situation so that could potentially drive him to want to retire. That being said Bama has struggled (in a relative sense because they’re still always a top ten team) to start the season and gone on to win a championship so I’m not willing to predict their demise yet. I do think when Saban retires it’s going to seemingly come out of nowhere though and at this point it’s possible any year. Also possible he coaches until he’s 100.

All that being said that UT win on Saturday was easily the best game I can remember as UT fan. I was too young to really appreciate the 90s and early 00s teams and was unlucky enough to be at school there during the Dooley era and the first year of Butch. That was the most fun I’ve had watching sports since we won the WCF.

Titans and Jon Cooper agree to a new stadium.

Expected to cost $2.2 billion. If approved will be built in the space between Nissan Stadium and I-24.
Titans said to be bringing $800 million in private revenue. $500 million in bonds from the state and a 1% tax on all hotel rooms in Davidson County.

Considering how much Cooper has ticked off the guys at the State level I wouldn't consider it a done deal by any stretch. There have been rumbles of that from higher ups in the State Legislature that several areas of funding could be pulled from Nashville.

Awesome. Hopefully this moves forward. One thing that will hopefully happen is this should allow further activation of the waterfront on that side once they demo the current stadium.

Stupid Yankee questions about college football:

WTF is Vandy in the SEC? Can't just be baseball.

How would Vandy do in the Sun Belt? Ivy League in FCS?

so it's all about $. That is weak.
No it isnt. That money pays for the whole athletic department including the non revenue sports. And as bad as Vandy is most years they have had a couple of bowl seasons in the last decade so it's not like they are the Washington Generals. And their basketball teams are usually competitive and in recent memory were even ranked.

Edit... I just checked... they have been to 5 bowl games in the last 11 years. That's not too shabby.

so being .500 is the goal...

I guess, college football organization seems illogical to me. I'm sorry, just education in sports and deep thinking.

Just remember that the only thing that really matters in college sports, especially football, is how much $$$$ you end up with when it comes time to count.

Late to the party and seeing the Nashville news in a waiting room (Not in the local television market).... the Titans need a new stadium? 2 Billion dollars?

Really? Where are they going to put it and are they putting in a hopefully MLB ready stadium as well?

Any chance we get a new arena? Ours is what, at least five years older than the stadium and you would think would get more butts in seats on an annual basis.

I was just gonna ask is 20 years all that stadiums are good for anymore. This just seems ridiculous.

I said the same thing today at work.

Most of the times, 20 year old commercial buildings are considered current, some updates are needed but they're basically in good shape. Might need a roof, probably rebuilding a chiller, etc, but nothing major.

Supposedly the story they are putting out there is that it was built cheap and has so many problems that it would cost so much to update it that dollar for dollar it just makes more sense to build a new one. What it boils down too is they put up an outdoor venue and did nothing to it for 20 years so now not only is it rough from a maintenance view point but also outdated.

The arena has been updated over the years, so while older is probably in a much better state, not to mention it has a roof which really helps on maintaining things.

Basically if they had done anything to it over that 20 years they may not need a new one.
