OT: The OT Thread: Work sucks. Dogs don't. (Warning in post 368)

I watched Season 1 of Andor couple years ago.. it was ok. I'm not a huge fan of these Stat War shows on Disney plus. Episodes are too short and feels like they rush thru the stories

I’ve been doing the same with the Marvel movies and TV shows. I’ve been watching them in timeline order. The only plus is that now the shows can reference specific things from the movies as opposed to alluding to them.

I havent watched what Chain posted because of potential spoilers, but youre spot on regarding phones. Some shows are packed with so much info that it becomes a chore to watch, but Andor is just so, so good that I thoroughly enjoy staying hyper focused on it for hours.

Also, Severance is a great show on Apple. Not quite as good as Andor, but probably a slight tier below for me.
Severance season 1 is top tier. Season 2 is good and efficient but didn't carry the same weight as 1 for me.

As much as it sucks that Andor is only 2 seasons, it was the right call to cap it there and run right into Rogue One. Aside from some meandering early on, S2 packs it in and pays off in spades. Ugh, I have too much to watch and read right now. I can't just do Andor/R1 again!

I get that. I fell off Mandalorian halfway through S2 because it felt too scattershot and self referential. Heard S3 is a turd and haven't checked on any of the others yet. I guess Skeleton Crew is supposed to be enjoyable, might check that out.

I never had a strong connection to the OT but always appreciated it. The prequels and sequels were just...so disappointing. Always felt like they were handed a very cool, ripe world/universe (in the story sense), but I didn't get to see any of the parts of that universe I wanted to. Andor clicked from the get so I'm obviously biased, but the way they expand that universe in S2 is so satisfying

At some point I will check out season 2

Pre-marital discussions on kids are fine.
But people change, and life circumstances change.
I know plenty of couples who wanted kids but couldn't conceive (medical).
Or, had hysterectomy (cancer) and then adopted.
I know a few couples (rare) who mutually didn't want kids, and remained childless.
Or, married / remarried, already had kids in prior marriage, but had aged out of low-risk pregnancy and chose to adopt for the 2nd marriage.
Natural delivery, Caesarian, Adoption.
Fosters who were eventually adopted by the fostering family.
Numerous example among family and friends over the years.
Really the only red-flag for me would be discussions about wanting kids via kidnapping.
One of my best mates is part of a massive family. He is one of 6 and has tonnes of cousins. I always got the feeling he'd have liked kids, but he didn't seem too fussed by it. His wife didn't want kids, and they'd discussed and were happy with that.

Then she accidentally got pregnant. They decided to keep it. Then they lost it in the 2nd trimester.

I obviously dont know the inner workings and what happened between them, but from what I can see, that was the beginning of the end of their relationship. They were great. Then they weren't. And it definitely felt like the woman that didn't want kids, was rocked when the unplanned one was gone.

He has moved on, has a new woman (who seems pretty awesome the few times ive met her) and he even got a ready-made family as she had 10 year old boy.

What do I need to know about 'Star Wars' to watch 'Andor'?

I got a good grasp of the original trilogy. A very poor grasp of the next trilogy. A mediocre or slightly below average grasp on the most recent films.

Is that a good enough basis or do you need to watch the other Disney shows or be a super fan in general?
I don't think you need to know much TBH. It's just before the original trilogy so if you think Empire is in full swing, rebellion is in its infancy, you'll be fine.

It's part of why I like Andor because it's not jedi and force etc. It's just a story.

We are about two thirds through season 2. My wife isn't sold on it because she gets a bit lost with what's going on because she can't remember season 1.

In other TV news, sucks to hear there is no more Wheel of Time. That was building up nicely.

Totally agree with Severance. It'll be interesting to see how season 3 pans out. It'll either make the show some of the best television of the past decade or just another very good show. Still, 100% a great show.

Another show the wifey and I watched was Love on the Spectrum. We binged it. I dont normally like dating shows, but the fact it revolves around autistic people makes it feel so genuine.

Four seasons was also pretty good.

Gah! This cancellation pissed me off. WoT was hindered by its horrible first season. Even though the 3rd season was very strong it was already too late to save it. At its cost. Would have been great, though, to see it carry on at that level for a few more years.

And yet... Rings of Power is still showing. Go figure.

I never thought they’d be able to pull off a TV series on a 15 book story in a good way.

Anyone read any Brandon Sanderson stuff?

Skeleton crew was fun. Reminded me a bit of Goonies.

I started watching it, and I agree. I lost interest after I heard it wasn't being renewed for season 2.
I think it wrapped the season up well for a one off.

It’s a shame Disney soured so many people on their shows. Had this one come out a few years ago I feel It would have been watched by more people, especially kids.

Bobba Fett really soured me on their stuff. So many angles they could've taken that show, and they completely botched it. Ahsoka started off pretty well, but I lost interest in it. It's ok.

Mando peaked when Luke came back, then I lost all interest in it. Didn't even attempt Obi-Wan's show. I wouldn't mind seeing one on Maul, though the animated series of the Clone Wars seems to flesh out his story really well. I havent had the time to dive into it, though.

It should have ended there.

The future sucks. Good stuff gets cancelled too easily, and I don't even mean the niche, dumb shit that I like (please someone bring back Scavenger's Reign).

I've only read his WoT (merciful) wrap-up and the first two books in Mistborn, so take me with a grain of salt. He seems very competent, great world and systems fantasy writer, but for whatever reason, I keep delaying a return to Mistborn or getting into Stormlight Archives...

Stormlight series hooked me years ago. I’ve read a ton of his stuff, and couldnt wait for book 5 of Stormlight. Finally, he released it and some 1100 or 1200 pages later, I was completely underwhelmed. Not what I expected at all for an ending, but then I found out there’s 5 more books in that series to go. At the rate he delivers in that particular world, I’ll be dead before book 10 comes out.

But I still love his work. I hate it when he gets too preachy or philosophical, but he is a damn fine writer.

The Anakin episode on Ahsoka was amazing though.

Yup. That's where it peaked, imo. The ending was pretty meh for me. That series has potential at least.

Pretty peeved to read that Rings of Power flopped hard. I wish it was Andor level of writing and acting. LoTR is the best trilogy on film Ive ever watched.

Oy... I'm trying hard to finish Stormlight 5 (Wind & Truth?) but its hard. Those books are so, so long and I had to do a reread from book 1 to remember it all. By the time I've gotten to about 30% into book 5 I'm fatigued. I'm honestly unsure whether its the story of just the amount of reading to get to this point. I haven't been back to the book in like 4 or 5 days and I'm questioning at this point whether I will.

And I LIKE Sanderson's stuff. I picked up Elantris when I heard he was finishing WoT and enjoyed it a lot. Read the full first Mistborn trilogy and a few other of his books. And supported the 5 "secret) books he wrote during COVID. But honestly, I haven't ready any of them.

My attention span isn't what it used to be. It's getting harder for me to stay attached to longer series of books the older I get.

I did the same thing in anticipation of book 5. Reread 1-4 just in time for the release last year. It is a difficult read. No spoilers from me, but I was disappointed at the end, and found out we have books 6-10 to wait for as well.

The next book isn't due until 2030. Then 4 more after that... hell, I'm old. I don't think I'll make it to see the next 5 books in the series completed.

Kind of takes the interest out of reading them.

That’s what I said as well. At the rate he delivers books in that world, I probably won’t be around for the end of the series. :)
