But still.

I'd rather have a Ariel Atom or KTM X-Bow.

Lotus 7 replica is so much cheaper and so many more options.
At one point I knew of a company that offered a turn key miata based 7 for $10k

And its registered as an original lotus in california, meaning street legal (looking at you KTM) and no emissions (Looking at you Atom).

Plus you don't have to wear a full face helmet to drive it around town like an Atom :D

I likely wouldn't buy a Caterham... there is definitely a premium there. I could maybe look at the stalker kits as they come with V6 which would be pretty ridiculous...
But I didn't spend years building cars for the school for nothing. Frame plans are everywhere and I can weld, build fixtures, operare a manual lathe and mill, do basic CNC design, ect... :) Should be less then 20K

i pulled up next to a guy in one at a stop sign once...

he seemed to be enjoying it, despite the full face helmet lol. even through the visor you could see his smile.

They're such a pain in the ass to register and the last guy I heard had a mileage cap. Wouldn't even be worth it to me. I'd rather own a Radical and leave it at the track (I've tracked a few at Spring Mountain).

The Atom?

I know the seven clones are a ***** too. I believe its SB100 that allows it to be registered as the car that it is built after, so you essentially have a 1965 lotus 7 when it comes to registration. But the number of cars this is given to each year is small, and apparently they are all given out within the first day or so, and you get to compete with the replica cobra guys for them.
From stories I have read, have your paperwork in hand, head to the dmv and get them to call into number that is basically continuously busy due to demand on the day the are issued each year. Be nice to the DMV and see if you cant get them to call over and over until it finally goes through.

Hope to get to try myself at some point :)

**** it man, I just wanna drive a car. There are so many different experiences available. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops. I knew a guy that had to have a special insurance policy for his Atom and could only drive it something like a thousand miles a year. ****, that'd be a weekend for me.

And going to the DMV is an instant deal breaker.

Make an appointment, it's awesome. Went a couple weeks ago to renew my license, was in and out in less than 15 minutes, no joke.
