in Sweden, they actually have indoor hockey rinks all year round that people can use, in Norway, a hockey rink is not built unless its used for every other imaginable purpose by the community, and planning takes years. Oh and forget about having ice during summer.

The sports federation and government simply does not allow for preferential treatment, and thus Norway will always be a backwater country that might produce a good player every 5-10 years by sheer luck

And yet Norway has 13 medals for the other sports and is top 4. Weird that you guys wouldn't promote hockey more

How come Norway sucks so bad in hockey and Sweden next door is completely stacked
In addition to what Idlerlee said, Hockey has always been considered a niche sport in Norway (we focus more on cross country and general ski disciplines). In Sweden it is almost the national sport by comparison.

Sweden has very good leagues, good recruitment, and more important than anything, their clubs has money. Norway has...well.. none of those...lol

It would have been nice to see Zucc no the big ice with guys who could play.

That makes sense. What do you think it will take to have the government invest into hockey programs? How much does Zuccarello being in the NHL provide exposure for the sport?

Zuccarello's success has actually helped fuel the debate about hockeyrinks in Norway recently. The problem is that Norway has so few inhabitants that it makes little echonomic sense to build a lot of rinks that only have that purpose. You can get away with it in some cities, but other than that there are just many many smaller communities on a budget.

And the reason we dont have it in the major cities is because of property cost, budgets and political naysayers. I mean, our national hockey arena is about as modern as the Rolling Stones. Literally.

Zucca being in the NHL and being successful, is invaluable to the sport here. Zucca gets the headlines when he scores a goal, the national elite division barely gets a notice in the sports pages when games are played. Its like night and day

Its anyones guess what could happen in the future, but for recruitment we are entirely dependent on positive exposure, and Zucca being a success in the NHL is impossible to put a price tag on.

Got it, ok we'll help you out buddy and make sure he gets a Stanley Cup this year

Mexico is actually ranked by IIHF. 36th in the world.

So is Mongolia. Basically, any of us could make those teams if we played in elementary school.

I've watched some of the teams in the 20's play (Japan, etc.) it is embarassing.

Im glad Zucc didn't get hurt when he was pushed into the net. He also got a short fuse

Finland's not much bigger than Norway, and the government has less money to spend, yet they made a big investment in hockey in the '60s, and have been reaping the benefits ever since.

On the downside, the investment in hockey rinks meant a lack of investment in indoor soccer pitches, and the soccer team has always been poor.

It's funny because Norway leads the all-time Winter Olympic medal table by a good margin. They are the winter sports kings, but just don't do hockey.

Quite a few of the medals are in the sports that others mostly don't care to compete at though. Cross country and biathlon total a bajillion medals per Olympics, hockey will give you 2 if both your teams win.

Quite a bit of the populated bit of Norway sees very mild winters, so we'd depend heavily on building tons of rinks to be able to compete. We'd do that, but there isn't really a lot of interest in the game, aside from when Zucc scores a goal, has an assist or somehow generally looks good in a game.

Japan is not that bad. In div 1 A, same as Austria and Slovenia.
