Having the better pick let you draft the guy you want.....What so hard to understand?

How about Arizona wanted to draft Reinbacher in the 2023 draft? Or the devil wanting to draft Slaf at #2?

Also Forsberg has drafter at #11.... We could have end up with G Reinhart. Galchy has not a bad pick. The people around him has the real problem.

Pretty sure our Gm would have drafted Will Smith if he has available at #5.

Well this is it boys, the end of our tank years is upon us. It’s been a painful but enjoyable journey and i’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the fact that the worst is now behind us.

I will be paying my respects to Carey & the hockey gods tonight at the Bell Center, I’ve already sacrified one of my hats for Slaf hat-trick versus the Flyers.

Go Habs go!

Based on central scouting rankings from today...
If we can stay in 5th, we have a half decent chance at Lindstrom or Demidov.
Do the right thing Habs.

I think the disconnect is in thinking that the tank is ruined because we might end up drafting 7th instead of 5th this year or 5th instead of 4th last year. No matter what happens tonight we are getting a top pick and great players will be available to us.

Like there's the suffering of going through a losing season and there's suffering because Gallagher scored two goals in a game we lost.
Those 2 Gallagher Goals may have lost the 5th and 6th pick. It’s not trivial

Obviously a good drafting position doesn't mean your team will draft the right guy. But it means that the "right guy" is avalaible to draft. With a worse position that "right guy" might not be avalaible. I should not have to explain that to adults honestly.
Excellent

Not always, even the Dallas Stars used a high 1st on Dellandrea. Even the can't miss Zadina misses.
You can’t say a higher draft position is meaningless because sometimes mistakes are made with high picks. Ridiculous argument.

Not a chance. Dont look at the rebuild in a vacuum but as a continuation. Teams like chicago, san jose, columbus, etc need about 5-6 years of tanking. The habs are different. Why?

Between 2018 summer and 2021 fall, the habs were in a serious retool. In that span, they got Suzuki, Caufield, Guhle, Mailloux, a bunch of prospects like Roy, etc and stacked their future picks. They also got players like Toffoli, savard etc who would then be used as trade bait for the "rebuild". Point is, they already had a good foundation before a rebuild was undertaken, something that other teams dont have. 2022 imo really is the reason why the tank years wont go an extra year. Hutson, Slaf, Beck, Dach, etc all in one draft week. Thats pretty much a quarter of your future core right there (two top 6 F, top 4 D, 3C).

The front office is content with their future back end and Hughes is recently on record saying they have too many young D. Goalie wise, they seem content with Fowler, Primeau, and Monty to bridge the gap until they're real contenders.

Forward wise, they have what looks like at least 4 of their future top 6 and 5 if you think Newhook who was playing with scrubs all year can go from a pro rated over 50 point season to around a 60 point season which imo is good enough for a 2nd liner. Add in the top pick this year and you have another top 6 F at the very least, maybe a top line player.

With all their prospects (Roy, Beck, etc) and draft capital (24 picks in the next 2 drafts) and possibility of good FA signings, they have enough for a bottom 6 going forward which is the easiest mission to accomplish.

So question is, tank for what? They've been progressing each year. 75 points(hopefully it stays there) this year. It'll probably be over 82 (the pace they were on before the Monahan trade) next year
