Ottawa, Buffalo and Anaheim are much better teams than us.
Columbus is also a bit better.

Anaheim is ass. They'll be good in a few years but they're still horrible.

Let's get that fire up again. This is now hopeless.

Ottawa will be 8 pts back with 4 games in hand after tonight
Wild are currently winning and will pull 2 points ahead
We need Buffalo to win
San Jose to win

Good news is if Buffalo beats Anaheim tonight they pass Montreal. They'll be one point up, and Habs move into 6th draft spot.

After that, there's no teams closer than 8 pts of Montreal. Ottawa has 4 games in hand, but they're not winning all 4 games.

CBJ has one game in hand, and are playing the Oilers tonight. I'm not hopeful for that game.

It's going to be well after the All Star break before a team other than Buffalo & Minnesota become a tanking target.

Wild are currently beating Washington 3-0, so a win puts them 2 points clear of Montreal.

The Blues are becoming a concern. They're only one point up on Montreal, but have 2 games in hand. They're playing Calgary tonight.

I think the dropoff has begun. Tonight was a great game to lose from a ‘tank’ perspective.

Watched Mackenzie’s mid year report - we could wind up with Eiserman or Lindstrom. That’d be incredible.

Anaheim is ass. They'll be good in a few years but they're still horrible.

Anaheim should be better than the Habs. All their top young forwards can't stay healthy. Otherwise they have enough decent vets to finish ahead of the Habs.

With the very real chance players like Catton, Demidov and Eiserman are going to drop, we'll have a shot at a good prospect even at around the 6/7 pick. One or maybe even two of those guys will likely be closer to #10 than #1.

The gap to Columbus will be tough, so I wouldn't expect that.

I'd expect Ottawa to pass us though. They have 7 games left against the four worst teams while we have only 2. Even if Ottawa only plays 2-3 games over .500 the rest of the way (which still sucks in this league) they would finish with 78-79 points. I'd certainly bet that will be more than we end up with.

They've been playing give or take .500 hockey all season so I was waiting for them to start to falter more, which they've done the last 3 games.

What made it fun last year was the Habs had Florida's unprotected 1st so we had two teams' standings to follow. It might not be as exciting this year because for one, we only have on team to follow. But also, Ducks, Sharks, and Blackhawks are so far behind, it is real unlikely they will catch up and even sniff passing the Habs. Montreal would need to go on a a few big losing streaks while those teams would need to go on a few big winning streaks.

However, here is the first one:

Desired results tonight

- MTL regulation loss to OTT: OTT moves 8 pts behind MTL with 4 games in hand. - Mission accomplished

- MIN OT/SO win vs. WSH: MIN win moves them 2 pts ahead of MTL in the OA standings. WSH with a loser point moves 6 pts ahead of MTL in the OA standings with 2 games in hand.
- NYI win vs. VGK: NYI win moves them 8 pts ahead of MTL in the OA standings.
- STL OT/SO win vs. CGY: STL win moves them 3 pts ahead of MTL in the OA standings with 2 games in hand. CGY with a loser point moves 3 pts ahead of MTL in the OA standings.
- CBJ win vs. EDM: CBJ win moves them 6 pts behind MTL with a game in hand.
- BUF win vs. ANA: BUF win moves them 1 point ahead of MTL. ANA is way too behind to even consider their outcomes.

*If BUF wins, MTL ends the night at 27th OA, which puts them Bottom-6.*

because a player like Demidov could fall to their lap at 7 and they feel like they could take him there but they wouldn't have with the 5th pick?
