Super frustrating tank year.

I suspect things will be much more optimistic next season though. We will have added a good forward prospect in the 2024 draft, Dach and Newhook will be back, Slaf keeps getting better, Reinbacher and Hutson will be one step closer in Laval, and we will have two picks (or more) in each of the first four rounds in 2025.

Kind of ironic that you think we will have added a good forward with our 2024 draft pick but doing so is apparently super frustrating.

Slaf at 19 is playing at a near 60 pt pace since being put on the top line.

That and the progression of so many prospects at the AHL level and other levels, combined with the fact only Celebrini is a stud sure fire top guy in this draft just leaves me with no concerns here.

We are still gonna have a valuable pick and there will be valuable prospects up front to get. The real soothing thing here is that this org gets it and we aren't gonna be mired in a losing stench that can't be lost.

Was never gonna be….we had 600+ man games lost last year and finished no worse then 5th…..with Slaf coming into his own, Caufield all year, Matheson healthy….could you imagine if Dach was in the lineup??!!! Just be thankful we drafted Reinbacher last year, was a gift from the hockey gods. (Like Colorado drafting Makar with McKinnon, Rantanaan + already in their lineup)

I said it at the beginning of the year, we are 8th to 11th without leading the league in man games lost.

Plus the emergence of Struble, Kovacevic and Monty…..let’s just say that it’ll be tough to squeak into that top 6.

The makings of a good but not great team. We need a gamebreaker on offense.

We are super achieving as a bottom 8 team?? Lol
Surprisingly, yes!

This is only true if one assumes that none of our U25 forwards will reach their full potential.

Suzuki, Dach, CC, Slaf, Roy & Mesar all have the potential/talent to be "gamebreaking' offensive players at forward... Hutson, Mailloux and arguably RB/Guhle/Konyushkov/Engstrom similarly on defense.

Unlikely all of them reach their full ceiling, but also unlikely that none of them do.

I get that patience is challenging, but I don't get the value of prematurely dismissing the talent in house

Can someone explain to me “game breaking”

I would understand that to mean the ability to stack games where the team is dominating possession and high quality shot attempts when the player is on the ice (leading to both greater gf and to opposing teams not having easy options to counter the impact)

Common findings amongst Cup winning teams have been able to score 260G+ during a season, while limiting GA < 240 and possess depth across the entire starting lineup (Fwd, D and G) - there’s no one right or wrong way in team building towards achieving these milestones

Buf, Edm, Sens, Leafs are able to achieve former (GF) but not latter (GA). Also they’re not able to continue that level of consistency into the playoffs (if they qualify) when games are tighter

As for playoffs need some luck, EVERY team has unfavorable matchups and of course being able to maintain health

I said good not great. ;)

As others have pointed out, it's kind of a whole mess of guys after Celebrini so who really knows who's going to be next best. Picking 2nd vs. 10th isn't looking like as big of a deal in this draft crop.

Also kind of funny when half the board have been playing violin on their wrists over 13th OA Zach Benson.

I've seeing people writing online that after Celebrini the top 15 can go in any order. So even picking 10-15th should bring back something good and the Habs had success drafting (and trading for) in that range recently.

I also remember seeing that 6-10 has a lower success rate to turn into a NHLer than 11-15, since I've seen a lots of teams "reach" in 6-10 that might explain why. It also means there are always fallers into 11-15.

Maybe Slaf but no forward on the team is capable of consistently putting up PPG+ imo. They're good players but not gamebreakers.
