One of the main things we've seen this FO care about is positional versatility. I doubt they see much value in a guy they know will be forced to DH when they've used that spot as a "rest day" instead.

After seeing how Charlie will use that, I want no part of it. Assuming that Springer is recovered, a rotating DH means that Kirk DHs around 100 times (and we carry a 3rd catcher who has no versatility) and 40 games are given to Breyvic Valera.

For all the rest games our big guys need in a long season, those could easily be off days for Cruz if need be (though I'm not a fan of the idea at all).

This argument made some sense when we were uneasy with Teo playing OF every day, but I have no fears there.

Positional versatility is important but not for DHing. With Semien and Hernandez on the roster, Biggio could be the guy to draw in to the lineup to spell all 7 positions outside of 1 and 2 defensively. With a 3B added, Espinal is the same. It's about being as flexible as possible when you need to react.

Not sure what this is based off of...Montoyo did a fine job rotating the DH throughout the season.

Its pretty clear that Springer/Vlad need a blow at least once per week and its nice to be able to rotate Bichette/Teo etc through there as well.

We literally started last year with a DH (unfortunately Rowdy didn't hit well enough)

I think that all 4 you mentioned can play 150+ in the field next year (3 of 4 never had been through a full season in the field).

Outside of that, our most common DHs were the 4th OF (which isn't great) and Kirk. And when all else fails DH a backup infielder because reasons.

Cruz would be an elite bat at DH that would allow us to give these guys days off when they need them.

Yeah, other than overplaying Panik/Valera when Espinal was clearly outplaying them, I don't really have a problem with Montoyo's lineup construction, off days, or positional rotation. You can nitpick a little bit if you really want something else to blame him for, but that will be the case with every manager ever. Overall, it's be fine.

Valera brought some value to the Jays down the stretch which turned into victories. Panik I understand.

Valera was a fine guy to have on the roster, but he shouldn't have been playing so much over a much better player.

Espinal amd Biggio were out a ton in the months of August and September. Thats where Valera got most of his at-bats and play at 3rd. Other option was Lamb for a short while. The other 2 were in injured list.

I guess I have overestimated a potential Cruz deal. He might only get 10.

Valera is a decent glove who has never really hit anything. If we have to move one of Espinal/Biggio i am fine with him, but not if both are here.

And I was semi joking on Valera being dh. It would be Biggio playing OF and us resting Teo for no reason.

Are you of the opinion everyone should play 162 games a year?

Sure, personally I don’t expect everyone to play 162 games but what’s wrong with someone playing every day if they are healthy? Semien just played in all 162, did he die? Vlad played in just about every game too. So did Bo. And Teo would have been also damn close to all 162 if he wasn’t out with Covid early.

I am of the opinion that playing DH is destructive to a lot of players.

It isnt a day off, and you are expecting performance under conditions that they are not used to.

I'm not suggesting no one can or should play in 162. I'm suggesting that sometimes guys need some rest here and there to continue playing at close to 100% and that giving a guy an extra day off every couple of months isn't "for no reason".

I agree it's not a day off, but I think any value potentially lost by having them hit in different conditions is more than made up for by the added roster versatility of not having a pure DH.

Do you remember how we ended up getting Josh Donaldson for next to nothing?

I like the ChiSox but this year they’re clearly the product of a weak central division. If they were an AL East team, they’d probably be 5th

has a team ever had a dynasty lined up just to keep trading major pieces of it prior to finishing a rebuild. 5+ years ago it was tatis this year it was madril + for kimbrel. . but it seems for the better part of the last decade i heard of this unstoppable juggernaut.

Wow, Atlanta robbed on that "catch". I can say with some confidence that if that shit went down at the Skydome the crowd would not be that tame.

Some nice RP are hitting free agency. We definitely need to invest in an arm or two.

Yep and funny enough a few of them are former BlueJays

saw this posted on another Jays forum

Rasiel Iglesias / 2.8 WAR / 13.2 K/9
Hector Neris / 1.2 WAR / 11.4 K/9
Yimi Garcia / 0.5 WAR / 9.4 K/9
Mychal Givens / 1.5 WAR / 9.5 K/9
Collin Mchugh / 1.9 WAR / 10.9 K/9

I dont think it's outlandish to say the Jays are better than all three of MIL, ATL and CHI

Pretty interesting that a team that finished 4th in its own division could be better than 3 of the 6 division winners
