I don't think Yzerman will approach it that way. LeBrun also said Larkin's agent Pat Brisson has a rep for making sure any deals he negotiates work for all parties.

If I had to guess, Yzerman will get a sense of what is available across the league and use that to make the case for what he wants in return from the clubs Larkin prefers.

You can't keep sad sack Dylan around, it's going to continue to be an albatross around the organization. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a case of addition by subtraction so long as Detroit gets the value in return you would expect from a 30yo 35-ish goal center who is dominant in the face-off circle and is signed to an incredibly team friendly deal for five more seasons.

The return should be quite good.
I can't say Larkin giving a three-team trade list really supports what you're saying here.

Teams like Vegas, Florida, and Minnesota aren't likely to get into a bidding war for Larkin if they know they're among the only destinations he'd accept. Even if Detroit receives a solid return, a limited list of preferred teams reduces Yzerman's leverage.

At best, Detroit is probably looking at a package built around futures, and if those teams remain contenders, those picks are likely to fall later in the draft. Unless a third team gets involved or Larkin expands his list, this isn't an ideal situation for Detroit and doesn't exactly feel like "playing ball."

I hope you're right, but I don't share the same optimism.

For sure some Tampering; I actually hoped it went the other way but his friends convinced him the other way it seems.

I hope they get the Dawn Dish Soap patch to clean this mess up. Worked for those little ducks in the commercials.

Pretty sure Larkin has talked in the past how he doesn't like to "recruit." Which, yeah, thanks bud.

Elliotte Friedman said he heard a different team was on the list. Let's give it some time, Yzerman has a rep for taking his time to get the right deal done. He's not going to be rushed and forced into a bad deal.

He's so f***ing dumb he should have said "hey guys im the f***ing captain of my hometown team you guys should JOIN ME!..." NOT ABANDON MICHIGAN....

Im trying to walk away from some of the animosity, frustration and anger I've had towards Larkin for this. It is easy to feel betrayed. We've been builiding this team up and are knocking at the door. The captain quitting on the team is an incredible setback.

One thing I'd never knock him for is that he cared. He was given an incredible burden of captaining a prestigious organization through its lowest points and was given very little support. Despite that, he was a good red wing, seemingly good in the community, wore the jersey/C with integrity and bought in to a long term rebuild for the prime of his career. Over the last 7 years there isn't much more you could have asked of the dude. I ultimately hope he isn't boo'd upon his return.

Larkin wasn't the player we needed him to be but the team wasn't ever of a quality that gave him a real chance. Our rosters essentially needed him to be a top 10 center in the league and that simply isn't who he is. Top 20ish center is a great player but that kind of guy needs help. This organization failed him. We had three 20 goal scorers this season and were bottom half of the league in GF. This was the story of the team for his tenure as the captain. The fact that Zetterberg is still the 2nd most productive Red Wings center for Larkin's career is a scathing inditement of the team building.

I can understand that now might be the best time to move on. As a 30 year old, we can still get some good value for him.

However, it must be said that this diplomatic take hinges on Dylan being somewhat openminded about his destination. If he truly is only willing to accept a trade to Vegas, Minnesota or Florida it will be awfully hard to remain diplomatic towards this guy quitting on this team and subsequently holding it hostage.

Give us 8-12 teams to work with Dylan and I'll move on in peace and settle into an amicable outlook.

Hold us hostage with a 3 team list and you deserve every boo, scathing commentary and criticism that goes your way man.

f*** him. He is a coward. And he is trying to leave in the most disgusting manner. I hope we keep him in the press box and strip the C from him until he expands his list. Piece of shit.

What's being lost in all of this is by Larkin doing this he completely changed any f***ing plans the DRW had this off-season. This shit effects Cats deal, Kane re-signing any other deals to add to this nucleus. The overall path to take. He is a complete f***ing clown and I will not relent.

The betrayal is real. I get that. But this wasn't working for either side. We've been smashing our heads against the same wall for 3 years. Eventually something has to give.

I was already leaning towards the idea that we *should* trade him to retool around the Seider/Raymond/Edvinsson window. Or at least thought, it was worth legit consideration.

Larkin poured his heart into this team for a long time. He paid his dues and we offered him no support. Im not mad about him wanting to move on. TBH, it might be the most mutually beneficial outcome.

But like I said, the amicable take in this hinges on how open minded he will be on his destination. If it remains 3 teams or bust he deserves the heat.

If he opens up his list, I can, and would encourage others to make peace. Bitterness does us no good, as fans, or as humans.

It is one thing if the Wings trade him. But for him being the captain...when we think of captain it may conjure up ship captains...who go down with the ship. I think even if the organization is poorly run, the captain owes it to his teammates and the fanbase to show leadership, which is not quitting on the team.

Even if Detroit was consistently at the bottom of the standings, they won't last long due to draft prospects, etc. One can argue it's been 10 years, but there have been respected captains who have remained with their teams through thick and thin. To want out just to win a championship seems to be quite selfish, even if there is merit to it, because he is the captain.

He is also under contract and paid well. I just don't get how athletes are given so much power these days for decision making.

Well said. While I get the pessimism in the moment, I think if you strip away the sting of rejection and the surrounding optics, this is ultimately the best move for the franchise. Larkin will have to live with this decision for the rest of his life, and he’ll never feel quite as at ease in his hometown as before it became public. But everyone knew, in some way, that a big change was necessary for this team to truly evolve. Even if I’m not overly optimistic that the Wings will improve with the assets from the trade, they needed both better players and a culture shift. This is that shift.

TBH, I'm just working through the 7 stages of grief. It's taken me close to a week to get to this point

What about the Detroit Red Wings (prior to Larkin asking out) would have been enticing to a high end player? I'd expect the Hughes Brothers to try to reunite on the next team to win multiple championships at some point in the near future, and for the Tkachuks to do the same.

It sucks, but welcome to modern sports with player leverage. You're one of the top handful of markets or you're nobody.
