The MDZ Thread

MDZ has been better on defense so far (counting most of last season, too) then everybody who adds the "but he's still not that good defensively" caveat wants to let on.

Absolute stud. Reliable top 4 defense with huge offensive talent.

It's exciting to see the progression since his rookie season, especially on defense. He's only going to get better. 22 years old.

I could never figure out what it hit anyways, the puck gets lost in the dark blue of Boyle's sweater and then is in the net. It's possible it deflected off of a Leafs player if not off Boyle

Do you nitpick every player on the Rangers? McDonagh isn't exactly the most physical guy in front of the net either.

Nitpicking Ranger's players is my M.O.; no doubt. I agree with you about McDonagh as well. The big issue going forward with our team generally speaking is a lack of "size and physicality." Hate to say it but we really need to get bigger and tougher. We look like a peewee team in size compared to the Bruins (especially) and some of the other teams in the league.

Rangers average height is 73.5 inches (didn't include goalies or Sauer, but included Fierrero and Kreider and Gilroy, etc)

Average weight 206.62

Bruins average height is 73.4, average weight 203.05

Actual size and weight doesn't have much to do with it, the Bruins just have a few fairly large players up front (Horton and Lucic, and Thornton I guess but he's not really a factor that gets a lot of minutes) and some big guys on defense (Chara and McQuaid mainly. Hamilton is tall but still skinny)

Other than that they're pretty average in size. They benefit more from players like Lucic being aggressive...and Marchand being aggressive, etc. It's more a style or frame of mind than actual size problems

Rangers have guys like Nash, Pyatt, Kreider when he's healthy, and Boyle up front. They aren't real tall on defense but in general are solid in size back there

i watched a montreal game the other day and holy ****! they've gotta be like 6' flat on avg

I'm happy to eat crow and give some credit to MDZ. He used to drive me crazy in past years when it seemed like he couldn't put a shot on net to save his life, but he's really stepped his game up.

His brain is keeping up with what is happening out there.
It's not just semi-panicky gotta do this, gotta shoot stuff.

He has composure. Hallelujah. And now watch all of his skill just get even better.

I was really hoping MDZ would have gotten his first Gordy Howe Hat Trick tonight. Oh well. Maybe next time.

Why is DZ regarded as only a top-4 guy?

Last year he was #18 in scoring and #12 in +/-. There are 30 teams so there are 30 #1 defensemen. There are 16 #1 playoff team defensemen. His defense was also acceptable.

This year he's begun with a point per game performance in the first 6 games and his defense continued to improve. I think if he can keep this up and score 27 points in a shortened season, which would likely put him in the top 10 in defensemen scoring, a case can be made that he's a top pairing defenseman.

one thing that stands out to me is his decisiveness... no longer is he hesitant with the puck and his decision-making has made strides since his first 2 years.

if he keeps this up he's without a doubt a norris candidate. he looks like a whole new player out there. nothing better could've happened to this team (except maybe locking him in for a few more years--or mcdonagh improving in the same way ;))

He's not really flashy (no huge shot or amazing skating or puck handling all the time) and he'll forever have to fight the stigma of being bad defensively.

He's certainly playing well now at least. Having Staal as his partner helps a lot but switching to the right side and doing a much better job of it has been a big step for him
