And he deserved every second of it, too. Girardi and McD have had very disappointing starts. Staal has been alright, and had a great game last night.

MDZ's good play has partly made up for the less than stellar start by the rest of the D.

Damn McD really spoiled us. Other than that **** up last game, he's been fine. Definitely not "very disappointing".

His offense has always been there and he has nice hands, but what has impressed me the most has been his play behind the hashmarks. Most young defensemen struggle in that area, but MDZ has really improved there so far this season. If he can keep the puck and the puck carrier between him and the goal like that, he will be fine.

One of the best passing defenders in the game and has a very good shot that I still think he needs to use more. Very happy with his progression and very happy that Sather balked at giving him up for Nash.

Kid's going to be a star for a long time. Maybe this could be our Scott Niedermayer, just not as talented...

A former Devil? Boo. Let him be our Michael Del Zotto :)

Devils had unbelievable defense: Stevens, Niedermayer, Daneyko, Rafalski. That's a hell of a top-4.

Almost as good as the Bermunda Triangle of Dave Karpa, Dale Purinton, Sylvain Lefebvre.

1. MDZ should stay with Staal
2. The whole team plays much better when MDZ creates in the offensive zone and takes some chances

I really didn't want to do this 'cuz it's more clutter to the front page...

...that's a lie, I really DID want to do this.

When is everybody going to eat crow and acknowledge how good he is?

His offense is very good but defensively, he is average at best.
There are times when he and Staal paired together look like a chinese firedrill trying to clear the crease area and in trying to get the puck out of our zone.

I have a feeling he can become Lidstrom and you'd still say his defense sucks. Ditto Staal.

As I said previously; we get it. Del Zotto is not and never will be Ray Bourque. Show me a single team in the NHL from the last 10 years that had six elite defensemen. It's mind-numbing how people feel the need to point out every single flaw Del Zotto has. It's like people here DON'T want him to be successful. Can't we just appreciate him for what he is? Michael Del Zotto makes defensive lapses and bad turnovers from time to time. Teemu Selanne isn't great defensively. Todd Bertuzzi isn't a great skater. These are things that are understood and accepted because ultimately the positives outweigh the negatives. We don't need to be constantly reminded that Del Zotto is prone to a poor play or poor game. His value to the team is pretty high regardless.

Say what you want, I am super happy I managed to nab him for my fantasy team. He is a solid player. Buff might seem better on the high moments, but at the same time creates terrible situations for his team. DelZ makes good plays without completely moving out of position.

Realistically speaking, Del Zotto has been, is and probably will always be an average defensive defenseman with really good passing skills and a very good all around offensive game. Staal? He has just about maxed out his potential as a solid defensive defenseman with fairly good offensive skills.

Next time a big bodied forward is out in front of the net with MDZ and Staal defending, let me know what you see without the "rose colored glasses" on!

Del Zotto has been nothing short of fantastic in these few games

Anyone who says otheriwse clearly wants to see him fail

I hate the "But Iz seen him mess up once!@!11 Until hez flawless for 8 seasons Iz wont believe it@!!11" mentality

if you break down every shift of every game then you'll find mistakes made by the greatest players to ever lace'em up....obviously he's made mistakes out there, but on the whole he's been outstanding

Do you nitpick every player on the Rangers? McDonagh isn't exactly the most physical guy in front of the net either.

Again i'll point out the complete dichotomy that is PP Del Zotto and even strength Del Zotto.

When DZ is on the power play it is often as the only D. He therefore has to stay back and cover, and doen't have enough of a slapshot to be a threat. He basically becomes a puck return machine.

DZ has success in two different areas; on the rush and passes from his own zone. With Richards carrying the puck up on the PP, that takes away the latter from him. He won't join the rush or even really creep down on the PP because our formation is so static.

The solution I'd propose is to flip Stralman and DZ on the PP units. Have Stralman work across from Richards on the first unit, DZ across from Girardi on the second. That will let DZ work with a more blue collar group and allow him to be more of a catalyst, rather than the 5th wheel on the Richards Nash Gaborik Callahan bus.

You are 100% correct that Del Zotto is important to our team!

That's the big issue here with the Rangers being that none of our defenseman scares anybody! Our defensemen are basically clones of one another with minor exceptions(McDonagh is a better skater, MDZ is a better passer, Staal is more physical along the boards and Girardi is the better shot blocker, and so on).

This is the main reason we have so much invested in the drafting and development of McIIrath who to me can be the one major difference maker on our backline that we so desperately need.

Anyone else was upset when we drafted MDZ? We just drafted Sangs 2 years before and he seemed like an unnecessary addition. Plus he had a lot of haters on the prospect board that made it sound like he was an abomination defensively.

P.S. Off topic but was MDZ credited with the goal against Toronto? NHL.com now has him at 1 goal 3 assists.

Wow...you dump on a guy who is capable of being a top 4 D on 30 teams in the league right now, and push for a kid who will probably never be a full-time NHLer? :shakehead

Heck, I'd gladly take him in Ottawa on our second unit.

Drew seems to like to dump on a lot of Rangers. But, it's completely unfair to say that McIlrath will never be a full-time NHLer before he plays one game in the NHL. He's barely played in the AHL.
