The fans and media seems to have hit the panic button..............but the team sure hasn't.
The opposite in fact................Hughes just two weeks ago said they would NOT sacrifice the furture for a quick fix right now.
Well, it depends on the definition of ‘sacrifice’, ‘the future’, and ‘quick fix’. That statement could mean anything or nothing. The fact is Hughes right now is doing nothing.

Marc Bergevin said he would NOT mortgage the future for immediate help.

The onset of the season, they created some expectations, with in the mix....................I think they will watch to see how the team responds to getting Laine in the lineup..............not just how he does, but how the team does.
That said..............there will be a change or two here fairly soon................could be some waivers, or a trade, but a shake up of sorts, to get guys looking over their shoulders. This type of losing is not going to be tolerated....I don't see Gorton allowing Hughes to continue to do nothing....

They're lockstep.

There is no life preserver coming.

I'm sure the team will get the message - you have to figure out how to come together, compete and get out of this. We are evaluating who is going to be part of this team in its competing form. You can find yourself outside of that picture if you don't put up your performances.

But nothing happens until we see Marty hold a vet accountable. Until that happens, we know that they are completely fine with things as they are.

No life preserver needed, but there certainly needs to be some changes.
Did you see Matheson yesterday?? Played like it was the 1st time he wore skates..........which may lead MSL to finally cut his TOI??
Anyhow, there needs to be some kind of shake to the collective group. This is how the Turds and the Sabres are currently running their rebuilds, rinse and repeat, and we do not want this to happen in Montreal.................the rebuild needs to lead to a much different set of results.

Gorton and Hughes might give the vibe of being patient, but behind closed doors, they can't be happy with the first 24 games. The team does not look prepared to start on time most nights for cripes sake....

I can.

The real question is if they will try to get another stop gap RHD vet this off-season (or extend Savard) or ride Barron and which ever lefty can't slot into the left side at RD next season.

Another top 3 pick is something this management wants.
Picks are great but it takes years for most of them to become solid NHL players, maybe Demidov will be the exception. I am looking forward to next summer as the time when Hughes solidifies the roster and gives the core some help next season. Laine if healthy and in a good place might give us a boost this season but he needs someone to play with because there is only one Suzuki.

#1 at this rate which is a exciting draft again
The season is done, they might as well ensure they are going to finish at the bottom. Move Dvo, Savard, Armia and what vet they can now and just play all the kids.

Season was done 3 weeks ago.

Our biggest issue this season, is the fact that we have no real #2 Centreman........Kirby Dach and Canada Post can't carry the mail.................
That 2nd C spot, is the spot that needs some serious attention....

Not to mention our play in our own zone needs attention, and oh ya our Goalies have been pretty sour, so.................................things have not shaped up the way most of us thought they would.

Back to you HuGo for more of The Work To Be Done category.
Coaching has it's own thread and issues!! LOL

I could write paragraphs about how Marty handled Matheson yesterday. It was egregious. But they're willing to be patient and have MSL develop as a coach, too.

Defense and goaltending are bad on paper and on the ice. Offense is carried by Suzuki, Caufield and Gallagher.

That's Hawks/Sharks level.

Doesn't matter who the coach is, you can't win with that.

Marty needs to be better..................hence he has his own thread.

Why not try Heineken with Suzy and Caufield more than 1 or 2 games, it's not like Newhook didn't have all the chance in the world to get his first assist playing on the top 2 lines all year, nothing to lose there.
Why not try many different combos during camp and preseason. Montreal always fritters away opportunities to experiment and when things go tits up,they go in all sorts of directions when the horse is already out of the barn.

Majority of young players not developing under Marty.
They were up until this year.

Dach has a legit reason too. Coming off a year away. The game has clearly spiralled for him but I don’t know how much of that you can pin on the coach.

Newhook’s a support player. With Dach going down it’s hurt him as well.

I don’t understand why Benoit Groulx was not given a chance as HC at NHL level yet. He certainly would help MSL as asst-coach IF he wanted that.

Hutson, Caufield, Suzuki, Guhle, and Heinemen don’t exist when you don’t want them to? Or is it that Dach, Newhook, and Barron are just more important and notable players?
Those have TALENT !
