The Sun: The Maple Leafs of season's first half are legit Stanley Cup contenders

So, with the expected Marner extension that's likely 8-9 more years before they're all gone and we can start being optimistic again? It's depressing and sobering but that's what we're looking at - and even then only if all the team's picks and prospects haven't been traded away so there's a decent team left to build around ... Minten, Knies, Cowan maybe?
I said this a while back that this is probably what we're looking at. A Marner extension dooms up to another decade of irrelevance, and it'll be a while until we're where PIT is at now - aging vets, and empty cupboards, I can't wait. This is of course the worst case scenario, but if also seems to be the most likely one. GLG!

Leafs currently in 11th for GA/GP at 2.82

Last year after 44 games they were 12th with a 3.32.

I’d like to see us finish 1st and Boston finish in the WC. We’d play them in the 1st round. Let’s see if things are different. Although, I realize this is not quite the same Boston team as year’s past but still. Mentally, Boston could be a big hurdle for this core.

Mentally, a bag of pucks and a zamboni driver is a big hurdle for this core.

Washington.

Technically, any team that can still make the playoffs as a contender, but Washington is the only team in the East that I would call serious contender at the moment.
So the entire Eastern conference has only a single team that can legitimately contend for a Cup? That doesn't really make sense.

It all depends on how you define "legitimately" or the word you used to begin with - "serious".

We'll see where we're at when the playoffs start but at the moment, I don't see anyone in the East besides Washington, would be quite the surprise if someone else in the East won the cup. But if you don't think that makes sense, go ahead and tell me who think can do it?

Personally, I don't think Washington is a contender at all. I very much respect their record to this point, but they are a transition team. There is a reason they were swept in the first round last season. In my opinion, the only actual contenders in the East are Toronto and Florida, and I'd give a slight nod to Jersey if they can ride hot goaltending. Carolina has missed its window, which is unfortunate because if that ownership would have just spent a bit more money on a real goalie that team could have potentially won a Cup already.

Toronto and Florida, OK.

Capitals were complete garbage last season with a -37 goal differential. Right now they are at +46 which is an 83 goal swing. They totally revamped their line up as well so the team doesn’t even resemble what they iced last season.

East is wide open. Any team can get hot at the right team in the playoffs and go to the finals.

The last dominant win we had was 2 months ago vs the Golden Knights. Since then we are 2-6 vs other top teams.

We are mostly eeking out wins vs mediocre to bad teams, losing vs good teams and losing to some atrocious teams as well.

Yeah I guess if we get 930 goaltending, we are contenders, but then again there are probably 20 other teams that the same can be said.

This team honestly looks like most other Leaf teams, very good at times, atrocious at other teams with very very rare spurts of dominance.

That coupled with the fact that none of our core players are "DAWGS" and I don't really buy it. Again, if we get God tier goaltending, sure anything can happen, but this team as always leaves you wanting so much more.

What is about Toronto that screams contender? Is it our impressive +8 goal differential? The fact that we're 8th overall (before the game tonight)? The way we played tonight? Our dominant special teams?

I believe we got .936 from Freddie one year, can you guess how many rounds we won?

I'm reminded of last year when O'Dog said "this is not a serious team". You could say this is just a knee jerk reaction to a 3 game losing streak but the smart money has been saying this for years.

Pukeworthy Matthews interview. Neither him or Marner doesn't seem too disturbed by these shitty efforts. Oh well, at least he didn't say they "played well".

I can't wait until the next rebuild, I can only hope I live that long. Sigh.

Contenders. Lmao. Collectively this team couldn’t spell contender

Then remind me which team in the Eastern conference is?
Certainly not the Leafs. This team has all the earmarks of the last 8 years. They fold their tent as soon as the games get a little tougher
