This really can't get said enough. It's actually kind of astonishing. Based on previous events I assumed that Edler would play until he was no longer wanted in Vancouver and then retire even if there was other interest around the league.

That he would reject a fair offer to stay here because he wanted out, and took going to a rebuilding team in LA over this, is incredible. This isn't 'chasing a Cup in TB'. This is 'I don't believe in this team, I'm unhappy, and I want out'. And it lines up with what we've seen from virtually every other core player on this team over the last two years (save Hughes, who is family friends with Weisbrod).

And the media silence is nuts. This is a 17-year Canuck, the best defender in franchise history, pretty much guaranteed to go into the ROH. That there is no team tribute, no glowing media articles etc. is telling.

There were a few articles on Edler and the team did share a post on twitter. I agree that there should have been more coverage.

I think clearly last year was not fun for Edler. I also think that the writing was on the wall and Edler was being offered a reduced salary and a reduced role. He did mention that he chose LA because they seemingly wanted him the most and saw him playing a big role. This isn't dissimilar to how Naslund left. Naslund himself said that during his last season here there were moments where he felt that he was done with hockey. And he left because the fit wasn't there. Gillis for his part only wanted to bring Naslund back if there was a fit (i.e. if Sundin signed).

It's hard for older players like Edler. The guys he "grew up with" are gone. Remember the Mexico trip Edler took with his teammates? Every single one of those players are gone. Edler did repeat that he wanted to try something new. It is normal to develop these ideas. Anyone who has worked at the same place for a long time probably has thought of leaving and trying something new just for the sake of change.

Here’s the list of things I feel I’ve been noticeably wrong about purely on results and not on process -

Favors Benning:
Kesler trade - Bonino was a really good asset alone and we got really good value at pick 24 in McCann. Did better on this trade in hindsight. Getting Kesler re-signed would have been Eriksson level disastrous.

Ryan Miller signing - Lack’s body broke down and Miller played really well. Was respectable off the ice too. Will always remember that game in Toronto when he stood up for our guys.

Vanek trade - Motte turned out well. Good value.

JT Miller trade - Worked out. Ignoring process.

Doesn’t favor Benning:
Not re-signing Brad Richardson - defended it because contract seemed long/expensive. He totally played to a high level after he left.

Forsling trade - I thought he was a nothing prospect and that Clendening was a better bet.

Sam Gagner - Was optimistic that he would add playmaking and an offensive boost to the third line. he stunk.

Chris Tanev departure - I was wrong. Should have given him the three years.

Ferland contract - I was wrong but my disclaimer here is that I figured they would have understood the risks and made a calculated decision with information we didn’t have. Turns out, it was stupid. Seriously, the contract wasn’t insurable? How was that not a red flag??

Schmidt - Played like a second pair defenseman and wasn’t worth his contract.

So, uh, also count me in to the group that has been more optimistic than I should have been.

Edit - Removed Eriksson.

So you'd rather have eg Vlasic than OEL? Something tells me SJ would listen.

Yeah, that's fair. I forgot about Vlasic.

I dunno. It's counter-intuitive but him being older almost makes it better, in that he can probably just be LTIRed soon. It's almost better to be owing 5 years to a guy who is 35 and might retire or pseudo-retire over someone who's 30 and isn't going to bail you out that quickly.

Also, are we talking about the full contract or just the portion that VAN is on the hook for (after retention?)

In any case, yeah, you can make the argument for Vlasic too. Maybe Karlsson as well if you think he's toast.

I think I would prefer OEL to Karlsson. Both will probably be similar in terms of performance but EK has 10.5 million dollar cap hit and is actually older too.

Disagree about the Kesler trade considering what was available.

Spent some minutes filtering, wouldn't you agree there are roughly 20 above that are arguably worse contracts than OEL?

Not trying to convince anyone that OELs contract is great though. (Even though I personally rather would have OELs than Nurse... Most would disagree I'm sure)

Goodness, no. Twenty? Skinner, Bobrovsky, Vlasic, Duchene, McDonagh, Lee, Hayes, Johansen? Price and Karlsson? That's still only 10. Doughty, Ovechkin, and Benn, maybe? And then you're talking about deals that only have 3 years left.

Spurgeon, McDonagh, Weber, Kane, and Seguin as well if he doesn't find his groove again.

EDIT: Removed Toews. Brainfart. Add Seabrook and Wheeler.

I would happily trade OEL for Spurgeon. I already said McDonagh. Weber is probably done and LTIR forever so his contract doesn't matter. Kane if you're talking about off-ice stuff you might have a case otherwise I don't see it. Seguin is a real stretch, but maybe. Still not really close to 20.

Seabrook is LTIR forever and he only has 2 years left anyway, not even close to as bad.

The worst contracts thread also lists OEL's at 8.25, Instead of the 7.2 aquilini will be paying.

I'd put OEL's contract around 10th-15th worst in Vancouver's hands. Like damn I'm almost ready to throw Hyman and Coleman in the mix without a game being played.

Agreed, twenty might have been a stretch. Still more reasonable compared to 5...

... now just imagine that OELs poor results are more due to Coyotes and off ice situations the past four years roughly. If, and it is a big if, that is the case, 7.2 for the next four/five years *might* look like a steal.

So you'd rather have oel than nurse and seguin, and it might be a steal....

What coyotes and off ice situations are you referring to exactly?

He's still a really good player.

I mean I get being upset about the direction Benning is taking- I'd prefer to keep the 1st rd pick and wait 1 more year for our bad contracts to expire as well; However, OEL will be a contributor and a solid piece on our blueline.

Mother, Coach, Trade rumor

(I found it funny that the two teams he agreed to be traded to are more or less the two teams furthest away from Arizona/Phoenix on each coast.)

I’ll keep repeating this over and over again.

OEL was being asked to be a #3 defender in a low-pressure market for a team that has been better than us.

He’s coming here being asked to be the saviour and being labelled a star #1 defender by the GM.

If he doesn’t like pressure, the situation got far worse.

Not even close to 20 worse than OEL, and if you'd rather have oel than nurse your credibility is exactly zero.

It's reasonable to question Nurse's contract. He's going to have a cap hit of 9.25 up until he is 35 years old.

These contracts in general are still escalating even with a flat cap this year, and a cap that will only rise by 1 million per year for the next 4 seasons after this one. These contracts are crippling teams. When Nurse's contract kicks in next year, the Oilers will have 3 players that take up 37% of the cap space. That doesn't leave a lot of room to provide a quality supporting cast.

He was getting outplayed by a phenom named Jakob Chychrun.

Hes not a #3 d-man. He was playing on a 2nd unit PP and 2nd pairing because he plays the same side as Chychrun.

If there is a d-man on our roster that gets move EV TOI I would be shocked.

LTIR contracts are only "good" if your team is sh*t or the reigning Cup champion :D
