The Loss of Broberg and Holloway Gripe Thread

For whatever reason the organization punished Broberg. That's a fact.

You really have to close your eyes and step in line to not see this. To blame Broberg for not receiving the ice time he so clearly deserved is a stretch.

Broberg was sacrificed. I took a significant amount of grief defending Broberg. No one backed this player like I did.

since Dec. 1st, Broberg has 16 points (including tonight) and Walman has 17 points

3 points tonight. But looking at points is an incomplete picture. This is about the development growth of an age 23 defenseman growing into a bonafide top four all situational player. He's third in team toi at 20:20, all EV scoring except for 2 PP assists, +16 (tied for team second) on a team with +10 goal differential,

Broberg's scoring production, essentially all EV, is behind a 1000 NHL game offensive d-man, a second one with 970 games, and third two-way beast with 721 games. Importantly too his ice time continues to increase the back half of this season, 19:23 in January; 20:09 February; and meaningful March games he's bumped up to 21:01 toi.

I won't compare the two players. They're at different career stages. Walman is a real good pick up and versatile player. I like the add. However in Oiler fashion they pay premium for acquisition and let an emerging #3, maybe a #2 home grown age 23 blue chip guy go for pennies on the dollar.

Unironically Walman was drafted by St. Louis. An organization that seems to have a solid record in drafting and developing defensemen.

There was no punishment. We are just a win-now team and Broberg required a bit of patience. I remember last year we paired him with Ekholm to start the year because the organization valued him so highly. But, of course there were injuries and other problems and the team crashed and burned, and so decisions were made to scrap for every win we could get. Broberg got less leash and we sent him down so he could get playing time. Knoblauch came in at a time when most Oiler fans were even saying we'd miss the playoffs. Knoblauch didn't want to give time to a rookie

Even after the playoffs the org loved him. Jackson just thought we could squeeze extra value out of him and Holloway because we are contenders and they'd want to lose some cash to stay here. They both would have stayed here, but Jackson just chiseled them a step too far. Both were willing to take much less than their current salary to stay here, especially Broberg

And btw I was right there on Broberg's side, pushing him as much as anyone. I really thought of him as our replacement for Ekholm. That's how highly I valued him and he's quickly reaching that potential. I don't think Holloway will hit Broberg's peak. It will just take more time.

Imo Jeff Skinner was the issue. The LW. He was a 9 million salary forward we could add for 3 million. How could we resist? Ha! A smart GM would have given Holloway that chance first and sniffed for a Skinner type at the deadline IF we needed him.

Well this situation is just annoying at this point. Holloway pretty much scoring a point in every game he plays. Everyone pretty much knows at this point that losing Holloway was a monumental mistake. Broberg is debatable.

But whats also annoying is Bowman is looking like a clown with some of his statements. Accruing cap space, no regrets, couldn’t build a team around them etc. It just looks moronic. Still convinced the reason they weren’t matched is because the organization was mad that they teamed up to put them in a bad position. Jackson didn’t take care of them early enough either by getting them signed or moving them for better assets and this is the result.

Just my opinion but I don’t think it was the value of the Holloway contract matters all that much.

I think with Broberg it would of been damn near impossible to match. I doubt they were confident that Kane would be on LTIR all year.

I think when they both teamed up to put the team in a bad spot it was the end for them. As much as people want to blame the Oilers it was unprecedented, and I bet it would make most organizations bitter especially coming off a Stanley Cup appearance. They obviously didn’t think Holloway had this upside (I’m not sure anyone did). But most viewed both as important pieces of the team. The problem was that Jackson didn’t take care of the situation early enough and he was signing players that he didn’t have the cap for.

Oilers can’t put Kane on LTIR at the start of the season because he wasn’t clear on when he will have the surgeries otherwise the Oilers would have match both players.

Ken Holland should be tarred and feathered for how he handled Holloway and Broberg lol. Constantly jerking them between the pressbox/AHL and impeding their development by jamming roster spots with inferior veterans that we have to "give playtime to show them respect". By far the worst general manager in the NHL for the 2019-24 era.

You could have run a 20 player roster (12F+6D) with Holloway by sending down Ryan and Perry. That would have left ~500k in cap space without Kane on LTIR. If you ended up in a scenario where you needed to call up players due to injury then they could have just put Kane on LTIR like they did early in the season anyway.

It wasn’t realistic to match Broberg. But matching Holloway was something the team could have done if they wanted to.
