D’Arnaud to the braves two years 16 total. Seems rich to me for him but I didn’t look at his numbers too closely. I know he did well with the rays

AJ Cole is an interesting pickup. Sneaky fastball that hits 95 and was decent with Washington last season. Good depth piece, definitely not what we have all been waiting for though.

He was in Cleveland last season.

I agree that it's interesting. He's not necessarily going to take one of the high-leverage spots, but he could always be a useful middle reliever.

Even when they narrow the search down to players named Cole, they still end up shopping in the third-tier market.

Yolmer Sanchez on waivers after 2.1, 1.8 and 1 fWAR or 3.5. 2.6 and 2.1 bWAR the last 3 seasons. Under control for 2 more seasons... Might be another rough off-season for some guys. Still only 27.

Justin Shafer traded to the Reds for cash.

Bound to happen given that he was DFA'd to make room on the 40-man for the new rule 5 protections.

Shame, but he had a couple of opportunities and while he showed flashes he also never really put it together

The fans wanted us to sign Cole so we did, and we did it for less than they were all suggesting. You’re welcome
And on a minor league invite....didn’t even waste a 40-man roster spot....
Some people are never happy.

Regardless of whether you want an improvement over him, I can't imagine we would be better off without Grichuk vs with him.
1000% the organization is better off having made that deal for Grichuk, I don’t think anyone can argue otherwise. It’s the extension of and commitment to Grichuk that I think puzzles and perhaps frustrates some as there’s still 4 years left on a guy that hasn’t made strides at the plate (wRC+ figure the last 4 years: 102, 95, 115, and 90) and will lose athleticism going forward impacting his defensive value.

Exactly. It was a good deal, no doubt, but the premature extension was a bit baffling.

Here are some fun facts about Randal Grichuk’s 2019 season!

Among RFers with a minimum of 130 PAs, Grichuk ranked:

- 45th in total fWAR.
- 50th in wRC+
- 47th in Swinging-strike rate despite finishing 19th in zone-contact rate.
-He swung at pitches outside the strike zone 4.8% worse than MLB league average.
- His Barrel rate dropped steeply to 8.5% after finishing in the top 15 in MLB in 3 of the previous 4 years.
-xBA and xSLG fell as a result with .237 and .427 marks respectively which show that he largely deserved what he produced in 2019.

I believe there is some bounce back potential in Grichuk going forward, but his skill set is becoming less valuable in today’s juiced ball era, especially in a traditional corner OF position where above-average offence is expected. With another 4 years to go and likely athletic decline coming as he approaches and eventually passes 30, you can see why there’s some that aren’t a fan of the extension.

I obviously don't like the extension now, but I was comfortable with it when it was signed because he had been an above average player for his career and I thought 2018 hinted at more untapped potential.

Yeah we were talking a 2 fWAR average from 27 year old outfielder who has yet to get to 500 PAs. It wasnt a bad bet, just didnt look good after year 1. Still time in my eyes.

I hear the Jays are strongly interested in many free agents, and are really doing their homework.
