Someone here wanted the jays to get cotton. He just got dealt to the cubs for cash considerations.
AJ Cole is an interesting pickup. Sneaky fastball that hits 95 and was decent with Washington last season. Good depth piece, definitely not what we have all been waiting for though.
Jays trade Shafer to the Reds for Cash.
And Cards release Dominic Leone.
So the Cards now have nothing left to show for Randal Grichuk.
And on a minor league invite....didn’t even waste a 40-man roster spot....The fans wanted us to sign Cole so we did, and we did it for less than they were all suggesting. You’re welcome
If only we were as lucky.
Regardless of whether you want an improvement over him, I can't imagine we would be better off without Grichuk vs with him.
1000% the organization is better off having made that deal for Grichuk, I don’t think anyone can argue otherwise. It’s the extension of and commitment to Grichuk that I think puzzles and perhaps frustrates some as there’s still 4 years left on a guy that hasn’t made strides at the plate (wRC+ figure the last 4 years: 102, 95, 115, and 90) and will lose athleticism going forward impacting his defensive value.Regardless of whether you want an improvement over him, I can't imagine we would be better off without Grichuk vs with him.

Here are some fun facts about Randal Grichuk’s 2019 season!
Among RFers with a minimum of 130 PAs, Grichuk ranked:
- 45th in total fWAR.
- 50th in wRC+
- 47th in Swinging-strike rate despite finishing 19th in zone-contact rate.
-He swung at pitches outside the strike zone 4.8% worse than MLB league average.
- His Barrel rate dropped steeply to 8.5% after finishing in the top 15 in MLB in 3 of the previous 4 years.
-xBA and xSLG fell as a result with .237 and .427 marks respectively which show that he largely deserved what he produced in 2019.
I believe there is some bounce back potential in Grichuk going forward, but his skill set is becoming less valuable in today’s juiced ball era, especially in a traditional corner OF position where above-average offence is expected. With another 4 years to go and likely athletic decline coming as he approaches and eventually passes 30, you can see why there’s some that aren’t a fan of the extension.
I obviously don't like the extension now, but I was comfortable with it when it was signed because he had been an above average player for his career and I thought 2018 hinted at more untapped potential.
