It's nice to see the front office appears to be heavily aggressive in acquiring rotation arms.

I'm curious to see why a Jays fan wouldn't be happy if they made that offer/move.

Bringing in talent that costs just cash is always great, provided it's not some idiotic contract that will haunt them in the future and I don't see 5 at $100 million as being an example of that kind of deal.

Just cash and the 43rd-ish overall draft pick.

But yeah, I would be fairly comfortable with 5/100 for Wheeler.

So apparently Wheeler may have a 5/100m offer from some team.

Would you guys be happy if that team was the Jays?

If it is the Jays that would be great. We need pitching. Damn I would offer Keuchel the same deal. Its only cash, and it would solidify our rotation for the long term allowing our prospects to develop. The Jays have very little in salaries guaranteed. They would be smart to assemble a roster now in high priced talent when their youngsters are not getting paid. Unlike the Leafs that ruined their window to do so with acquisitions like Marleau and others.

I know the hockey world is different due to the cap. But the window to acquire talent is now. Next season the pitching available on the open market is nothing compared to this year. So lock them up this year when you have the budget to do so.

Imagine Pearson continues to progress and we have a top 3 of Pearson, Wheeler and Keuchel the year after next when we should be contenders!!!

Shatkins should go all in this year with an eye to the future. Sell Rogers on doing so. We still would have a middle of the pack payroll compared to other contenders with a young nucleolus.

60 game suspension, 21 games already served. So he would be back in early May and would miss maybe... 8 starts? Of course, knowing he's going to miss those starts will also keep the cost down a bit.

Would definitely have a look if we miss out on 2 of Keuchel, Wheeler or Ryu. The Jays should be targeting 2 of those 3 as a priority. They have the budget and next years free agent class is lacking that quality.

Why not??? Its only money. And I bet he takes 20mill a season for 3 years rather then 4 years a 15 million per.

Maybe the Wheeler deal is extreme I agree. But I wouldn't mind overpaying for Keuchel as well on a shorter term deal like 3yrs for 60 million.

Why would it be a bad idea?

I didn't suggest targeting Keuchel was a bad idea. I didn't even suggest overpaying Keuchel by a bit was a bad idea. I was suggesting offering Keuchel 5/100 was a bad idea.

That is a massive overpay on him and would be a bad deal the second the ink dried.

Anthopoulos really sucks at the whole "collusion" thing.

I never understood the complaints about "collusion." In the 1980s, when the owners were actually colluding, free agents weren't getting any offers at all.

In recent years, these free agents have received plenty of offers, they just didn't like what they were seeing. A player wanting a 7 or 8 year deal, and getting offered 3 or 4 years isn't a sign of collusion - it's a sign of the marketplace adapting.

As a rebuilding team, it'll be challenging convincing any top Free agents to spend prime years here. Overpaying would likely be the only way to do it which is likely what the FO is looking at doing. Getting 2 to come though is not happening.

I would likely nothing to do with Keuchel. He's turning 32 next month, and as hopefully as anyone wants to be the world series isn't coming to Toronto next year. So you're acquiring a guy hoping he is a difference maker when he's in his mid-30s

Like the player and the deal but i dont like losing the 5th pick in the 2nd round so count me out. I would take a gamble 2 lesser pitchers on shorter term deals AND keep the 2nd round pick. That pick is big draft capital and can be a great player.

What's left to rebuild?

They have their 1b3b in Vlad, Bo as their SS, biggio as their 2b, Jansen and McGuire at C. OF has gurriel, grichuk. So you need a 1b to pair with Tellez and another OF if you are not comfortable with Hernandez. So what's left pitching to acquire. You have pitching coming up but a couple of #2s at the top of the rotation and the team.could compete thus year.

Not sure how much going cheap is going to help build a winning environment for the kids to thrive in

One could make the argument that they have, by quite a margin, the most capitalize to utilize this offseason (and the ones following).

Money to Spend: What’s the Likely State of Team Payrolls in 2020?

That's conservative. If they went to a $130MM payroll, they'd have $80MM to spend...which is ridiculous.

This is where you front load a bunch of deals to bring in a guy or 2. if Wheeler is getting 5-100 give him 4-100 it is still 100 million the total value but allows Wheeler to maybe get another shot at 33 years old for another longer term deal vs being 34.

You could bridge the gap to the younger starters this way and be competitive in the now in order to provide a winning atmosphere for the players and the fans.
