Exactly. No one I know enjoys laying people off. It is brutal physically and mentally. Even when an employee gets fired, the what if's start rolling in your head.

Laying off folks always tore me apart. At one time I was responsible for shutting down a plant in Newton. Swore I’d never do it again in my career. Laying off was for the ‘innocent’ for lack of a better term. Had nothing to do with how good an employee or worker they were.

Firing someone ? Never really bothered me as they had it coming. Usually after multiple documented warnings. Usually.

In all cases I had HR with me. Mostly to answer ongoing benefits or Unemployment details.

I understand this completely. I have never been in HR - always worked at smaller companies but that can be very uncomfortable when someone is let go. There was one time when we had a really strange guy working there, he was obsessed with Hitler and read books all the time about the Nazis. He was not a good worker and they decided to let him go. My boss, who was the manager at the time, fired him and then said to me "I'm taking the next couple of days off, I'm worried he might come back for revenge" - gee, thanks. I was the only person who had to be in the office every day, the rest were on the road. I was a bit paranoid for a while. When my boss came back, he brought a brick and sat it on his desk "just in case". What a coward!
Your old boss is an absolute donkey. I am glad nothing happened.

I love my job and am so happy that there is little to no drama and the bad seeds tend to get weeded out soon after they are hired.

I've booked extra therapy sessions after a round of mass layoffs before. I needed a safe place to just let it all out.

I am with you on firing people. You f'd around and found out.

Having a manager and HR notifying employees is how we do it as well. The manager delivers the news and then drops off while HR discusses benefits and next steps.

I am so depressed.

Why did he have guns?

Because, without opening that door again, for our moderator's sake, America has always had a thing for guns, and the country is awash in them,

The US has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world, with an estimated 393 million privately owned firearms12. This means that there are 120 guns for every 100 Americans123. According to some statistics, about 30% of American adults own a gun, and the average American gun owner owns five guns4. The year 2020 saw a record high of nearly 40 million background checks for the sale of firearms and explosives4.

Historically, culturally, there are understandable reasons for this.

There are, shall I say, other reasons as well.

I would only add that pointing to mental illness, which of course is ubiquitous in modern society and has no "cure," is not an excuse for doing nothing.

Why, thank you, kind sir. I feel the same way about you and I enjoy your posts very much. Thank you for all you contribute here.

Ditto.

Son was able to come home from Lewiston tonight to CT, and I have literally been in tears since he told us that he was able to leave campus and make it back home. He is a strong young man and a college athlete and since he arrived home, he took a long bath and and has literally been asleep for about eight hours...while I don't think he is ready to process everything that has happened in the last 55 or so hours, it is awesome to have him home, and now that the shooter has been found I think I might be able to sleep for the first time in a few nights.

He was at that bowling alley with his girlfriend a little more than a week ago, so he is a bit shaken up and thinking of the "what ifs"...

Definitely gonna hug him a bit tighter over the next few days before he heads back to Lewiston., and prayers for Lewiston and those who lost their lives and everyone who is and will be affected by the events of a few nights ago...Lewiston is strong but thankfully the community can take the time to heal as best it can now that the shooter is no longer a threat.
Please make sure there is lots of opportunity for ongoing conversation.

I'm so sorry.

I'm not sure if anyone has shared this already. Mick posted about the Bs setting up a fund to help families in Maine

I mean, it was like a 99% chance that he'd be the first Friend to die given his behavior, but you just don't expect it to happen any given day.
It's so sad because he beat his addiction and overcome so many things. He almost died a few times.

And then he drowns.

Just so heartbreaking. He was so talented. I watch Friends every night before bed.

Manager was complaining he has to cook for everyone everyday. I volunteered too didnt realize I was going to be cooking for 30+ people. Family tortellini fettuccine recipe with some alterations was a hit with people getting seconds and there not being enough

I'm so worried about my daughter-in-law, she somehow contracted covid and started getting sick on Wednesday, her fever has gone but everything else is still getting worse - cough, sore throat and congestion. My daughter works at an ENT clinic and thinks she must be asymptomatic because my DIL works from home and hadn't been anywhere else. They both mask everywhere and even went to Norway without getting it. Right now, the estimate is 1 in 19 people have it in Ontario.

We get our booster (new vaccine version) tomorrow. It is very worrisome how it is being ignored for the most part. Meanwhile, ICUs are filled to capacity and deaths are increasing to high levels we haven't seen in a couple of years. Let's pretend it's gone though.........
