One of the downsides of success. You become so emotionally attached to every piece and player. Gonna be tough seeing him play in red again.

Although at 3.25M per year for 2 years I am kinda surprised. Figured he wanted/would get a bit more and I'm kinda surprised we didn't try to sign him for that.

The only problem is, play him where?

Williams will be remembered as fondly as Deadmarsh, just more.

Wednesday, March 9.

Capitals at Kings.

Justin Williams Legend Night.

thanks bud..you could've stayed in LA with a paycut though

you chose not too

i bleed black so... yeah see ya!

One of my favorite players of all time. As clutch as any athlete I've ever seen.

So painful.

Like Mitchell, his loss we be felt on the ice more than most people realize.

Damn I thought he would have been able to get more. Surprised we weren't willing to match that offer. I bet he wishes free agency was last year.

And off, I'd argue. Mitchell and Williams werent' 'core' players but they were certainly part of the extended heart that made this team unbeatable in a series.

It's weird...I knew he wasn't going to be a King any longer, but it really didn't hit me until I saw that he had signed on with WSH.

I literally began sobbing uncontrollably. A sad day for me. :(

Final Kings stats for Williams..

Regular Season
427GP 103G 163A 266P

Playoffs
73GP 22G 32A 54P

Mr Game 7
Conn Smythe Trophy winner
2x Stanley Cup Champion with Kings.

Look forward to the future Legends Night.

With some other posters, it sounds like he was aiming high and no one was offering him what he was looking for, but the Kings had already filled his roster spot by free agency. No doubt the Kings would have done that deal if that was what he was looking for before Free Agency.

Man, one of under-appreciated aspects of his game was trash talking and getting in people's heads. Let's see if he can mend Caps' game 7 woes.

Such a clutch player, a key part in everything that was accomplished.

That said, I'll always remember him for his honesty during interviews, his interactions with fans, his humbleness, and the way he always praised his teammates and never himself.

What he's been able to do on the ice in the playoffs is absolutely amazing. Thankfully, I've got a lot of clips and videos from the two cup runs. When I share that with my son when he get's old enough to understand the magnitude, he's going to get to watch the action of course, but I'm also going to share the interviews. And when JW talks, I'm gonna tell him that that right there is what being a great teammate, and a great person, is all about. He's not about the money, he's about being part of a family that succeeds together.

Justin embodies what the Kings are all about and I'll be forever thankful and proud that he was on this team.

That cap's really bleeding us of our special players. From Rich Hammond's Twitter:

If Kopitar gets $9M/season - not unreasonable - then you have $14M to spend on 9 players in 2016-17, with no Lucic. Then you'd give $3.25 of that $14M to a then-35-year-old Justin Williams?

Well, it was hard losing Willie Mitchell to Florida too but then he's had a good fit there, becoming captain and mentoring Aaron Ekblad. I hope Justin has as great a fit in Washington as Mitchell has had in Florida.

I don't think there was anyone on the team who was more eloquent or more competitive than Justin Williams.

ETA: For those of us wondering why he took less money than we expected, I got this from the Capitals' board:

Spoke with Justin Williams' agent. "Quite frankly, there was more money from another team, but this was what Justin felt was the best fit."

Last night, his agent said, Williams talked with Barry Trotz about his fit in Washington. A half-hour later, the deal was done.

One more: "We saw Washington as a contender and we saw Washington as having possibly, probably, the best player in the league in his prime."

ETA: Saw this on CNS' Twitter from VP of Hockey Operations Mike Futa:

It's funny. There's not one skill that Justin Williams does exceptionally well. Mediocre, semi-soft shot, not super fast, doesn't hit hard, not gonna stickhandle in a phone booth, not very big or tall. Every success he gets he EARNS. Through grit, effort, determination, and smarts, he's put together a pretty darn good career. One of my favorite players of all time. I'll have to go catch a few Caps games this year.
