Yeah, when we looked gassed in that Devs series from playing two 7 game series cause his system was too much for the talent to maintain.
We would have lost that Devs series if Gaborik was healthy or not.

I like Torts. But think the style he coached was too much for this day and age of top NHL competition. He brought the team together and to a different level. For that I appreciate and respect.

As I said, in all honesty -- Torts is the best coach this team has had in decades. Plural. That's both a testament to him and to the fact that we have had a metric mother **** ton of ****** coaches.

He would make an excellent assistant coach, nay, a perfect one. I'd welcome him back in NY in that role any day. He is not cut out to be a head coach though.

No, I just know that one series was not one player away from winning it. What you're saying is Gaborik's injuries seemed to have affected many players on that team somehow.

good point was made in the newyorker magazine,: you have the league best goalie, let him see the pucks, stop blocking, clear the zone, rather than always diving on the ice.....

Crosby missing 60 games probably had something to do with it.
That said, I don't know why people have such a hard time realizing the Rangers were a very strong team last season. Players bought in to what Torts was preaching and for that I give Torts credit.
However, there's two problems with demanding so much of your players: (1) When you don't get the ultimate reward, it's natural to start thinking maybe your sacrifice isn't worth it; and (2) A coach who preaches sacrifice needs to have his players respect him and want to take the proverbial bullet for him. Once a coach loses his players, it all become a house of cards that starts to tumble.
Since this is an appreciation thread, let me just say that Torts got a team to play a tough, disciplined style. The team had an identity and opposing players knew they were in for a battle when they played the Rangers (for the majority of Torts' tenure). Eastern Conference Finals is nothing to apologize about.

the absolute ONLY reason i'm ok with him being fired is if it is true he lost the room. If that's the case, you have to get rid of him.

It seemed like last year we were tantalizingly close. One of the problems the Rangers have had in recent years is getting a good and consistent year in and year out performance from our top players--with the exception of Lundqvist who year in and year out does give us consistently good performances game in game out year in year out.
Why Gaborik can score 40 goals one year and look like absolute **** the next?--I just don't know. Tortorella's coaching certainly bears some scrutiny here but in the end the onus should come down on the player. I have the idea that Torts was bending over backwards to accommodate Richards who maybe should have benched long before.
Looking at the Bruins team that just knocked us out--it's a sum of its parts type of team. 4 solid lines--a solid defense led by an elite defenseman--a pretty good goalie. There's nothing really all that spectacular there. Everyone knows their roles. They do all the little things well--from board battles, to crashing the net, penalty killing, to clearing the crease, dropping the gloves--even their callups from the AHL fit right in and were large factors in why Boston won--watching them in the last series I got the idea that they were all on the same ****ing page. I didn't get that idea from watching the Rangers against them--confusion over roles, a dysfunctional 4th line, an inability to sustain pressure from shift to shift, shoddy penalty killing, unforced turnovers (Del Zotto), getting pinned in their own end for lengthy stretches of time.

But when did he lose the locker room? They got off to a miserable start. Did he lose them during the lockout when he couldn't speak to his team or did he lose the room during the playoff run last year? This is ridiculous. If he had truly lost the team then they wouldn't have come back in the series against Washington.
If it's true that the players told Sather they couldn't play for him they're soft. They sound like the fans putting all the blame on one guy. Who the hell tunes out a coach that just brought you to a Conference Finals?
Mentally, I hope they don't turn into a team full of Ovechkins.

Same here. I will miss the man. I think that people on this board who are too young to remember the ******** we, as fans, have put up with will really regret being so happy to see him leave (unless we win a Cup).
The man is one of the best coaches in this franchise's long and less-than-illustrious history.

Maybe he started to lose them after last seasons playoffs ended, remember he went on LaGreca's show and said some guys need to learn they need to step it up in the playoffs and he specifcally called out Gabby as I guy who hadn't learned that yet...that was the same day as Gabby's MRI.

The truth hurts sometimes. Glen will contunue to build teams that are competitive but never good enough to win it all and he and he and the players can continue to blame coaches for their lack of success.
I guess 41 of Nash's 42 playoff shots didn't go in the net because the coach hurt his feelings. And the one's that he shot into defender's legs happened because his coach was mean to Sam that one time.
What does Nash have to do with last seasons post playoff comments by Torts about Gabby? Nash wasn't even on the team

He didn't say Gabby was the only player that needed to step up in the playoffs and he was right about it. If this group of players thinks they're going to win a cup they better step up their games. It was the same thing this year. Nash didn't step up. What's his excuse?
