The Rangers under Renney were a bubble team and hardly a team demanding of respect. You always respect a player like Jagr and a goalie like Henrik, but the team as a whole really wasn't feared or respected around the league during the Renney years. They were a team you'd probably be hoping to face in the playoffs.
With Torts as the coach they took a step further and became a team to avoid. They played a style that was tough to face, blocked shots, hit hard, went to the net. And even if I think letting Torts go was the right move, he deserves a lot of the credit for the heart the team showed especially in 2011/12.
