Torts knows what it takes to win, I think he learned many players here what it is going to take atleast.

I think he helped many Ds defensively.

He paid good attention to the kids no doubt.

If you think that Dubi and Anisimov were the only casualties of the Nash tread you're the one on drugs. Since you don't know how we were the top seed last year, I'll explain. You see, hockey isn't all about big names it's a total team sport. And last year we had great depth. The Nash trade prevented that from being the case this year both directly and indirectly. Last year over 82 games we showed we were the best in the East. We "struggled" in the playoffs because Gabby lost an arm, not because all of a sudden the system stopped working. Playing hardnosed, blue collar hockey is a great way to play. And when you don't want to tank for a 5-10 years it's just about the only way you can be elite.
 
Let the kids play if they earned the spots. Stepan from day 1, McDonagh, Hagelin when the Hartford brass said they were ready, and they were. Probably changed Brandon Prust's life by giving him a chance.

Last season was such a fun team to watch, shame he couldn't get us all the way there, but seeing the Rangers number 1 in the east was down right stunning.

Was cool to actually see him outside of being the coach interacting with Liam on 24/7, and I'm a huge dog lover so nice job with the dog walk.

Good luck to Torts, I don't think there is any doubt he will get another shot.
 
I feel for him, and for the 24/7 kid. Torts did seem like an alright person outside of hockey.

Maybe him and Richie can go to the same team after the buyout. Keep having wine tastings!
 
Best coach we've had here in a long, long time. He gets a ton of credit for how guys like Callahan, McDonagh, Girardi, Stepan, etc have developed. Sad to see him go, but I'm sure he'll have another job in no time (if he wants one).

It's irrelevant to say he brought us back to respectability when Renney, Lundqvist and Jagr did just that years before Torts got here. Maybe you didn't respect those teams but others around the league did, and that's what being respected is really about, how your opponents and league view you.
 
I was in the give Torts a full training camp group but I understand why he was canned. Rangers will get a top free agent coach

But Torts did a good job, he got the ship in the right direction. It's true his demanding personality gets old on players but at the same time he made me laugh and he gave crap about this team. We all have to respect that and he will be missed.

It was good times overall

The Rangers under Renney were a bubble team and hardly a team demanding of respect. You always respect a player like Jagr and a goalie like Henrik, but the team as a whole really wasn't feared or respected around the league during the Renney years. They were a team you'd probably be hoping to face in the playoffs.

With Torts as the coach they took a step further and became a team to avoid. They played a style that was tough to face, blocked shots, hit hard, went to the net. And even if I think letting Torts go was the right move, he deserves a lot of the credit for the heart the team showed especially in 2011/12.

You feel the team was returned to respectability with Renney at the helm, fine. I see your point.

Hmm... I've wanted him gone since 2011 and have not been shy in saying so, so it only seems fair to thank him for the things I do respect and appreciate.

Getting the team to bond and play as a team; the blue collar work ethic that made last season a memorable one; the ability to develop, play and put faith in young players when the coaches felt they were ready for it; and the numerous other things the coaches did that delivered a respectable team to follow. Thanks for that. I also am not the most politically correct person going and have to add that I found his dealings with the press unprofessional, but exceedingly enjoyable :)

I actually like the guy, and I sincerely wish he would have just sucked it up and tried another assistant to run the PP and help with some minor tactical tweaks. I truly thought that would have worked and benefited the team and coaches a great deal. While his own convictions may have been his undoing in the end, at least the guy stood by what he believed in. Hopefully he lands a job and I wish him all the best.
 
I never liked torts, never liked his style and his decisions.. But last season was the best season I've seen. Take into mind I'm 18 so I never seen the 94 season.

Props for that! But that's the only props your getting from me. Lol
 
So, do the people bashing Torts not understand what an "appreciation" thread is? How many other threads on this board exist to bash the guy? Why do you feel the need to clog this one up with your negativity?

I'm not being negative, I'm being honest when people start making things up, like 'he brought us back to credibility'.
 
I'll miss Torts. The guy was a character. Good coach but probably just wasn't going to work out with Rangers. Best of luck to him and hope he lands a job soon.
 
I'm gonna miss Torts. When were looking for a new coach, I was behind Laviolette, but liked the Torts pick well enough, and he grew on me over his time here. He did a lot to change the mentality of this team and its players for the better, and helped integrate a lot of youth.

Still think he should have been given the start of next season. Really don't like firing a coach based on a weird season like this one.

That's the thing, I really don't think it was just this season. The players seem to have had enough losing, enough injuries to say maybe there's a better way. Maybe there is, maybe there isn't, though I have a hard time believing Torts hockey is the only way to get the Cup.
