Hildeby put up .913 in the AHL last year and that means he's the guy? What the heck. Artur has better numbers this year than Hildeby did last year. Hildeby has generally been a bad goalie. He's only had one season in the AHL above .900.

Artur is 2 months younger than him, and drafted before him. I'd give him a look. If we have to use Hildeby, that's a different discussion. Hildeby hasn't had a good game in months, in the AHL or NHL.

I'm so confused. AA in 11 games 2.36 GAA and .911% save percentage. Hidelby in 41 games 2.41 GAA and .913% . How is that better? What makes AA the guy with those numbers anyway? Talk to me when AA has played 41 AHL games I guess. Hildeby has generally been a bad goaltender? What?

AA is a good goaltender prospect. Hildeby is pretty good as well. He's earned his shot to get a look at the NHL. That's it, that's all.

Opinions differ.

I would take the 30 year old 2 time cup winner with a better AHL save % this season over the untried rookie that has struggled in the NHL.

.919 and 2.15
vs
.897 and 2.73

If the rook had better numbers I would have him with the big team.
He doesn't, so why go there?

You'd prefer Murray to play over Hildeby? The guy that has had major hip surgery and has played a grand total of 10 AHL games in a year and a half, almost 2 years? Alright man. I guess looking at a small sample to start the year should decide it. 3 NHL games for Hildeby and it's over. And we wonder why we can't develop goaltenders.

Might as well sign 3 cups Phil Kessel to play over Grebenkin at this rate.

Just to be clear, if we called up Murray he would have to go on waivers to be sent back down correct? Under what emergency scenario can we call him up and be waiver exempt? I fully expect if he went on waivers a few teams might bite, Colorado and Edmonton off the top of my head, maybe more.

So what, why do we have him then? To babysit on the Marlies and take up starts that are for the kids? This is exactly why we kept Murray around, he’s insurance and Stolarz is likely gone for 2 months ( they will nurse him back with a knee scope, won’t risk it). If he gets picked up in February whatever, he filled the void as desired.

Understood and I am not disagreeing with you. I just can't remember the circumstances for emergency callups. I guess to avoid it they could also keep him on the roster as his cap hit is minimal, but it costs a roster spot.

I believe since he already cleared waivers he'd need to play 10 games or be on the roster a certain number of days before needing to clear again.

Why do people want Murray? Murray essentially to the Marlies what Clifford was to the forward group. A veteran presence and that's it.

It should be Hidelby running the backup. This is good for his development. He'll get good exposure, get to play NHL games and learn more about NHL shooters
This will prepare him to be the backup next year full time.

Murray has nothing to do with this team anymore other than helping young goalies through the ropes and provide some depth if it came down to it.

I wonder how long Woll will last before he gets injured. A few games or a few weeks? My guess is he won’t make the halfway mark of Stolarz return. Hope I’m wrong though.

Hildeby will get the back-up spot. Murray probably will get more starts with the Marlies though.

For 4-6 weeks I could see them just rotating in Hildeby, Artur and Murray on emergency recall as needed. Too lazy to look at the schedule but if we budget for 6 weeks and 3.5 games a week you’re trying to divide the work load over 21 games. Give Woll 10-12 of them, and budget 4, 3 and 2 between the rest maybe.

You can survive that, especially with the way the team has been playing D.

He earned his shot, for sure. He got it, he's sucked. Give him more time to develop.

Now let's try someone else.

I don't get why we don't just call Murray if he is actually healthy. Dude is the one who was actually an NHLer at one point. Why is he here otherwise?

He was injured during the initial callup.

Also, he's not waiver-exempt so it wasn't worth losing him if Stolarz was just going to miss a game like they seemed to be initially expecting.

If he's not injured anymore (not sure his status), then we should. 6 weeks is 19 games, with like 4-5 back to backs in there.

Try Murray, if he sucks, try Artur, if he sucks, try Hildeby again. We got to find out who works.

Sure? But it's not like they'll play a lot regardless. I'd rather test someone that will be here beyond this year and see what we have as opposed to the guy that's coming off major hip surgery and turning 31 by the end of the season. If Hildeby has a couple more rough outings, maybe you give AA a shot if Stolarz is still injured.

He earned his shot, for sure. He got it, he's sucked. Give him more time to develop.

Now let's try someone else.

He's had 3 NHL games. 2 in his first stint, 1 where he was fantastic. Then given a game on a back to back in his second stint and he was more than fine. Younger options with limited experience sometimes need a little longer? Thankfully patience with younger options with our management seem a little better.

He's never going to be 100% healthy after major surgery. He was recently day to day. I dunno why there's a contingency of people that think Murray is a NHL option. He might get a shot at some point, but it should be after all options have been exhausted. He's just a veteran journeyman goaltender hoping to rebound and find work after being injured for a year. That's all. Every organization has 5-6 goaltenders.

Why do people want Murray? Murray essentially to the Marlies what Clifford was to the forward group. A veteran presence and that's it.

Precisely.

They could try doing something radical like scoring more than 3 goals sometimes instead of worrying about which goalie is going to be least shitty.

How many games do you give him?

You can also hurt his development with call-ups which is what happened last year with Hildeby. He came up, didn't play (because he was getting lit up in practice so Keefe didn't trust him), and his stats tanked when he went back to the AHL presumably because he wasn't playing.

We got 2 other goalies that we need to evaluate also. We didn't sign Murray to be a lifelong AHLer, the same with Artur. Hildeby had 3 looks, he was bad in 2 of them. Give someone else a chance.

I give him as many games as he needs. I'd be more than fine to give AA a game or two as well, but I'd give a long leash to Hildeby to get him comfortable and get in a groove. AA gets to play a lot more in the next 4-5 weeks like Hildeby did last season when Jones was up.

We didn't sign Murray to be more than he is either. He was signed to be a depth goaltender on a 1 year min league deal and to rebound after being injured for a year. A veteran looking for work in a field where it's hard to find some close to home. He won't be here past this season probably anyway.

Bad news about Stolarz but an opportunity for someone else to shine. Hildeby settled down after a dicey start so I’m looking forward to his next game.

That was his first season. Unless you count the 2 whole games he played the year before. And he was 6th in the league in GAA.
