OT: The Holiday Thread

I love Christmas, but I'm not really feeling it yet this year. We have been so busy - finding time to do all of the things I love (buying a tree, decorating) feels more like a chore than a joyful event.

This morning I lit a Christmas candle, am drinking my coffee out of a Christmas mug, and decided that things will get done when we have time to do them. I'd rather get the tree later than normal and enjoy it than rush through it.

I like the idea of Christmas but honestly, I always feel sad. I know it is silly and I try and hide it, but it is a sad time for me.

It's not silly. It's a sad time for a lot of people. Even though I love it, I still get nostalgic for the Christmases of my childhood. I was VERY close with my grandparents and Christmas Eve was always at their house. It's bittersweet...I've created my own tradition to make the day special, but I always get a little wistful.

I'm good leading up to Christmas and then things take a nosedive the week between Christmas and New Years.
Losing my dad 5 days after Christmas has turned the holiday into an emotional rollercoaster

TBH Christmas hasnt felt like Christmas really for a long time.

Before I moved from Mass we would go to my aints house in somerville maybe stay the night. Had a whole christmas feel

I mean last year was cool. I cooked both days, watched my girls tear apart their presents and fell asleep cuddled with my girl.

Dont have that this year and maybe never again

its not silly.

it has become an emotional roller coaster for me. As much as I love the season I fluctuate between the joy of having my kids back home to the sadness of missing those that have passed.

I retired in 2021. My company's end of the Qtr/ year made it impossible to take time off at Christmas. I always had to work, and my daughter and sis were at my house. It is VERY nice to not have to worry about work. I can relax more and spend time with my family.

As I mentioned before, our old vintage snowman star decided to not work this year. Finally the same one my mom found on ebay came today. Can't find it anywhere else. She said it was meant to be. And she is right. It feels good to have it back on the tree. Didn't feel right without it. I'm 32 years old. We've only ever had this beautiful Angel on the tree (until that one broke) and this one. While this isn't the same one that's been on the tree for over 20 years, I'm just glad we were able to find it online. Time for the next 20 years!

Now to decorate the outside and the rest of the house. Thank goodness I didn't get our lights and blow ups up the other day. The rain and wind would of ruined it a bit.

I love Christmas time - meaning the month of December running up to Christmas Day. I always feel sad on Christmas Day. For me, Christmas Eve was magical when I was a kid and when our kids were young. That magic isn't there, we won't have any grandchildren so I am a bit sad about that. This year I lost my Mom and basically my Dad since he doesn't remember much anymore since my mother passed.

So, here's the train my Dad made many years ago and is now ours - he was incredibly artistic and this is his own design as well. He worked for the railroad before he retired.

I would ask Santa to put this in my stocking, but my phone’s model is sold out.

Posting this here and in one other thread (?). As ususal, I never know where to put these bits,

From The Athletic, owned and operated by NYT, and therefore occasional access to selected stories are accessible to NYT subscribers,

December is here, the holiday season is upon us, and it’s time to think about what everyone wants for Christmas. Hockey Santa is making a list, he’s checking it twice and he’s ready to deliver some goodies later this month.

We’re kicking off the holiday season by offering up one item on every team’s wish list. If you don’t see your favorite team unwrapping these exact gifts on Dec. 25, just know that it’s because they’re a very naughty team that got a lump of coal instead. Or they just don’t celebrate. Either way, everyone has stuff they could use.

1. Boston Bruins

Last Week: 1
Record: 19-3-0
Dom rank: 1
Sean rank: 1

Wish List: A nice, thoughtful, handwritten card for our friend Patrice Bergeron that says how proud we are of him for all his success throughout his career.

What do you get for someone who has it all? Something from the heart. The Bruins have starpower and they have depth. They have a strong group of forwards and defensemen. They have a terrific starter and a capable backup. They have it all and that makes gift-giving really difficult.

So we searched deep in our souls for something special and landed on a Christmas card. It’s for Patrice, the King of Boston, a universally likable all-world talent that is on a mission to finish his illustrious career with one more Stanley Cup. We’re rooting for you, buddy!
