I think he "killed" his unit during a training exercise, actually.

I was initially interested in the idea of bringing him back as a free player using Hossa's LTIR money. But... as someone pointed out to me, his contract is due for this year and next, at which point I'll take a hard pass.

If it was simply this season, and the Hawks could take a chance on him being able to slide back into a shutdown role, I thought maybe... Just because it would be essentially a free player. And if he didn't perform, you put him back on waivers, and if he isn't claimed, you cut ties after the season. Not knowing he has this year and next, though. Don't want that money tied up for next year. Not at all.

If the Blackhawks were in any kind of position to make a run, I'd take him back in a heartbeat. Lord knows the top lines could benefit from the better matchups, and the team as a whole could benefit from the boost in shot suppression.

But at this point, there's no point trying to improve the team, they're not going to make the playoffs, better off doing what they can to improve their lottery odds.

CAR has a strong enough defense, they already are top 3rd of the league in shot suppression. They just need more scoring and a goaltender with a pulse.

EDIT: Though after a good start, Kruger's scoring chance suppression numbers are down this season, despite easier deployment than he's ever seen in Chicago. So maybe he's just lost the ability to make that kind of impact.

then thank God we are not!

honestly I never hated Kruger, he played his role here perfectly...but as we have seen with other past players, that ship has sailed and the spark rarely comes back.

in the hunt for a playoff spot or not, no thanks to Kruger - his get the puck and dump it out of the zone immediately will live on with me forever lol!

Seems as though a lot of players from the 2015 Cup win are struggling to play well these days, or are out of the league completely.

Toews, Seabrook, Keith (to an extent) Sharp, Saad, Vermette, Kruger, Oduya, Versteeg, Hjalmarsson, Darling, Crow can't get healthy, Shaw, are all struggling to be what they once were. A few are explainable, like Oduya, Sharp, and Keith.

And then you have all the guys who aren't even in the NHL anymore. Hossa, Richards, Roszival, Bickell, Rundblad, Desjardins.

The only players from that team still performing at a high level are Kane, Crawford (when healthy), and Teravainen. Crazy how much can change in 3 years.

I’m surprised the Pittsburgh core hasn’t experienced the same decline as the Hawks and Kings. Credit to their guys, Crosby and Malkin look as good as ever.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stan was on the phone right now. If Hawks don't take him, his NHL days should be over..

... but wait, what about all that playoff experience? :sarcasm:

They have 3 elite offensive players on their team, and they are carrying their team. It would definitely be nice if we had 3 elite offensive talents to carry our team too, when the young guys are struggling to score.
If it wasn’t for all 3 of them still producing like gang busters, they would likely be in the same position as the Hawks.

The Pens (this year) aren't too impressive.

They play in the right division and have a very good PP. Their 63 pts would be tied for 5th with the Wild (played 2 games less) if they were in the central. Their PP is awesome at 25%. That keeps them a float as they give up 3 goals a game.

Gotta love the undying support and defense of Q from Hawkaholic....

What do Boston, LA, and Pittsburgh, who have all returned to an elite level, have in common over the last few years? Hmmmm.......

Pit and LA both have 63 pts this year. I wouldn't call that elite. That's 5th place in the central currently.

I think a lot people forget how big of a loss Hossa is.

Just shows how important he really was.

Selke caliber D. 25/25 minimum on points pretty much every year he was with the Hawks, and most the time more than that. PK minutes. PP minutes. Yeah... it's a huge loss that many seem to forget about. Still sucks to not see my favorite player of the last 10-15 years out there. I've never seen someone protect the puck the way he protected it. :( Thanks for making me all misty BK.
