GDT: The Four Nations Tournament Thread

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
There’s also reports Sweden was getting absolutely ravaged by whatever illness was going around at the tournament. Not sure if Petey was affected or not, but maybe not a bad idea to send him straight to Vegas so he’s not around the team for a bit.

If Zibanejad and Pettersson weren't steaming piles at this point, they could easily have won the thing.

Yes, but sadly this tournament isn't for them. It was never made for them to win. It's for Canada and the US. Swedes to a man don't play with enough fire....at times. Except for one or two I've seen in my time. More actually. Names like Sundin, Alfredsson, Forsberg, Lundqvist, Zetterberg.

I was very disappointed to see they lost to Finland. Nothing Swedes love more than beating Finns, and vice-versa.

Difference being...Americans hear the game, sure. Canadians listen for it. Like a distant whisper rolling from the sea carried in the wind. Canadians can have full-fledged conversations watching hockey and miss very little nuance. That's the Canadian experience. My brother, I believe we find that with every game.

The first cold snap of the year is the best. It's too bad ours was so short. Some great Canadians out there just experienced their first lick of Canadian winter and barely blinked. Good on 'em. Embrace the cold and eat your meat and taters.

I question whether Elias is really a Swede if he can't get up for a game against the Finns. ;)

Well if we can come to any conclusion based on this tournament, it is that Petey's struggle isn't because he "doesn't give a shit". He definitely care enough about his country to play in the 4 Nations, and yet his performance is no difference than his play the last 12 months.

Petey does care, he just doesn't have the ability to create anything offensively. To go in as one of Sweden's top center, somebody the team relies upon for offense, and 3 games later finished as the low man in ice time and has zeros across the board for the tournament, that has got to hurt his pride. I just feel sad for him.
I think there is more nuance to this, though. Certainly, we can all agree, I think, that Petey is generally putting in the effort on the ice, although I do think he is cheating to the defensive side of the puck, and isn't attacking enough with the puck or on offense. But this isn't a Loui Eriksson situation or anything, clearly.

But in many ways, the on ice play of a player is the tip of the iceberg and what us fans see, but in reality, there is a ton of on ice and off ice preparation that goes into it and is a prerequisite to the player performing on ice during games. And we don't know if Petey has/had put in the effort to this aspect of the game, and indeed, Allvin has publicly criticized him for not doing so.

So I think its too simplistic to just look at Petey trying hard (mostly on the defensive side of the game) and just conclude that effort isn't an issue.

Great news. A biased take, as I'm not the most patriotic when it comes to these types of events, but I would have been mighty upset if I was a Canucks season ticket holder and the team's best player ended up being lost for the rest of the season as a result of playing in this tourney.

The cold/flu I had Thursday-Saturday had me completely useless and brain dead. I can see why they'd bring extra players as back ups.

Doubt that was Petey's issue.

I think it has been an evolving situation.

Just from what we see on the ice, earlier it was looking a lot like he couldn't do the things that helped make him great, and this was backed up by the edge data (will not get into the why he couldn't not important to this).

Now however you are correct that he is not attacking offensively and is not shooting when he has the chance. He is bobbling pucks. I do think his lack of ability has led to this lack of confidence, and I do think it is currently an issue. Hopefully if he gets a lucky one or two he can get that back at least.

Personally, I don't think he has been moving his feet or attacking with the puck since the beginning of the slump. And Tochett has basically continued to say this much throughout the slump.

I was just sick for a week and all I had was the mildest sore throat. Meanwhile, I got it from my partner who had the same as you did and couldn’t even move for 3 days. I take my multivitamins and zinc daily though

I agree with the moving his feet bit, no question there, but its just different now. It has been talked about too about him differing more. There is a big difference in him not moving his feet, and now where even when he has the puck, he isn't looking to be dangerous.

He kind o had some of that the last game he played, where he did shoot (I think it was a slap shot if memory serves) and looked to make plays, like the pass he had to Hronek. But too often he wasn't looking to make those plays. He was looking to pass it off to someone to make those plays.

Why in gods name does it take a coach to tell an 11.5 million dollar player to move his feet? Is that what Cooper tells B Point? It’s hilarious really.

The McAvoy situation is wild. Hospitalized shoulder infection from injury earlier in the tournament. Bruins mad. No wonder Canucks told Guerin to stuff it. Can't trust him to take care of their players.
