The fans here have been asking for a team like this for years now, they got what they wanted. This is the monkey's paw

His taking up a roster spot is the issue... if you want our top players playing 22+ a night, keep Reaves and basically bench him, if not, play someone else.

I'd rather they use the roster spot on Holmberg.

If they want tough guys they have a better one in the AHL.
I am not arguing in favour of Reaves. If he sucks he won't have a job on any team.

It's been a bad 10 games, but it's hockey. Things can change real quick in this sport and league.

Giving this team some more time to figure it out, I think they can do it.

You wanted do nothing tough enforcers that would protect the team, you got Ryan Reaves.

You wanted a big name D-man, you got John Klingberg.

You wanted some snarl in the top 6, you got Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi.

You wanted a hockey man with lots of experience in charge of things, you got Brad Treliving who has 10 years of being a GM.

You do realize they aren't even 20 games in right? And that they still have the wrong guy behind the bench?

You were tired of the nerds running things

Yeah, they were pathetic. Good riddance to them.

so now you have a team that has been caved in on expected goals this season.

Who gives a flying #*@&% about 'expected' anything? Pathetic nerds, that's who.

You got what you wanted, you just didn't know what this team needed.

Actually we did, but its a process and we've just started it. What, exactly, did the nerds accomplish? How many Cups did they win?

The problem with the Leafs over the last few seasons:

1) Goaltending - We haven't really gotten a stable solution since Andersen was here.

Well that's a hell of an analysis.

I'm a Dubas guy

Translation - I am a nerd with no credibility. I live in a fantasy world where expectations matter more than actual results; something we never achieved.

2) Transition Defense - This is something that dates back to the Columbus series. The Leafs are a slow skating team on the back end with Morgan Rielly as the only truly fast skater so they are suseptible to counter attacking teams. This was probably most clearly shown in the Montreal series; Montreal only scored 1 goal off of a sustained forecheck that entire series, the rest of their goals came on special teams (3) and or rush attacks. Justin Bourne after that series noted that Montreal that season relied more on transition offense than any other team in the league and Toronto was one of the worst at transition defense. The Leafs countered this by playing a heavy posession offense which. This problem would pop up vs Tampa the next season and Florida the season after. Florida in our most recent series scored 80% of their goals off rush attacks and not heavy forechecking as people here think.

3) Transition Offense - Basically the other side of the coin as above. This team only has two players who are truly good at transition offense - Nylander and Reilly. Most of the lines are built for heavy posession game. Not that there's anything wrong with that but you do need a balance. Teams that are too one dimensional don't go far.

None of these things were solved in the off season.

None of them were solved? Thanks for that newsflash. Again, do you not grasp that it is a process and that the team cannot undo the damage the pathetic nerds did in just a couple of months?

Why are you lashing out at me? You got everything you wanted and you're still complaining. Be happy.

I don't know why Leaf fans beat each other up.

End of the day; Matthews, Marner, Nylander all want the biggest paydays possible. It's not going to help get to a winning franchise, when we already have Tavares at 11m. Leafs are limited in what they can do, and I doubt they win a cup this year.

Which is the goal. Last year was failure, the previous 6 years - all failure.

We're only less than 15% done this year, but so far, not looking great.

It's crazy management (Shanahan) wasn't given the door along with Keefe. But that's the Leaf's: no accountability.

Fans fighting with each other really does nothing. Just stop watching and buying things. Maybe then they'll turn it around. Or not. I'm beyond caring anymore.

So then you want a burn it to the ground rebuild.

You must or you wouldn't be suggesting Shanny kick out Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander.

Need I remind Buffalo has missed the playoffs 12 straight years.

You are asking to be Buffalo

I wouldn't be so sure about that... he currently sucks and has a job... there is always at least one GM who thinks you can punch your way to a cup.

I'm saying I don't care.

I go to away games for fun thrice a year with a bunch of friends in the US, just as a fun thing to do.

I never watch on television anymore. I don't really have any expectations. I go to the games as a fun thing to do with my friends.

I went to Florida last year too, probably the best part of the trip was Ft Lauderdale's beach.

End of the day, Shanahan has been a failure. Seven years and just one second round appearance, with 4 guys for 40m, is a failure. If you can't recognize Shanahan and the Leaf's management has been a failure, I don't know what to tell you.

I respect Marner and Matthews for being great hockey players and having great agents. But don't tell me they give a lick about the team.

I don't really have any emotional attachment left for this team.

Nobody wanted an enforcer who couldn't play hockey, or skate. That was pointed out by many at the time of the signing.

Nobody wanted a Big Name D, who is a defensive disaster.

You mentioned snarl and Domi and Bertuzzi in the same sentence. This is MAX domi, and TYLER Bertuzzi, not TIE nor TODD.... I think people get confused... these players never had snarl, no snot....

This isn't what anyone wanted, or at least anyone who watched anyone outside of the Leafs, and knew other players in the NHL.

The old, "I don't watch, I don't care but I know exactly what's going on" schtick.
Everyone sees through the B.S.

I don't know what Canadians smoke these days, but if this is what the Leafs fans wanted then I'm deeply ashamed being a Leafs fan.

Is the monkey's paw showing its middle finger? Nobody asked for this team. Everyone wanted it blown up(the top 4). No one wanted Reaves for 3 years. We wanted a strong defense and top 9 grit and hoped Woll vastly stepped up while SAMsonov played like last year. I never would have paid Bertuzzi 5.5m for one decent year. The fans are smarter than management. We wanted Keefe gone. There is no way this team wins 2 rounds.

Lol what? Yall have literally bitched and cried for the past 4 years to get less skill and more "grit tough" players. Every year you get some version of it and then your ideology is proven wrong bc the "baby" skilled players are the ones carrying the team. Nit the grit.
This is not the team I wanted. This is a team I wanted... from Wish.

What a thread lol...

Am I the only one trying to apply a Simpsons meme to like every post. In that sense, I love the premise of the OP. If I had A LOT more time in my life I might go for it.

(wish I had a monkey paw)

I am going to watch and enjoy as many games as I can. The more, the better.

It's like these people don't realize we can pull up receipts from past threads.

Lets do another one but use a different player we never acquired - Tanner Jeannot. Jeannot if many of you remember was traded to Tampa for Cal Foot and FIVE draft picks. Here's a really good example of how the hockey world grossly overrates a guy just because he's a big face puncher:

Jeannot is worth either a 1st or top prospect
I would do knies for jeannot.

Would grans or Spence be available?
Leafs need to make a list of young players they aren't willing to trade. Then offer that player + 1st to get the conversation started.

Tanner Jeannot since that trade: 9 points, 33 games, -10, including -3 in only 9 minutes of icetime from the most recent Tampa Toronto game.

That’s the thing, Wilson or Tkachuk would still be top-6 players if they didn’t throw hits. Pronger and Stevens would still be HHOF defensemen if they were nicer guys.

Exactly.

HFBoards often flat out makes up fan fiction for players they like and don't like based on styles of play.

As I said earlier "Though I am not too happy with Reeves impact so far and was extremely disappointed with the response in the Boston game...."
So why are you happy he’s on the roster if he’s an absolute boat anchor of a liability

I don’t recall many asking for a D core this soft or a team who is willing to watch one of their young players get injured and do nothing about it. Also for the cherry on top of the rotten cake, AHL level goaltending at best.
Weren’t Bertuzzi domi and reaves supposed to impart truculence to the group, or is it snot? Too many blowhard “hockey-men” with their nonsense to keep up with.
Either way, watching reaves do nothing and Bertuzzi even less by staring in the opposite direction was gross

I'm still stuck on this first line trying to understand it
What are you having trouble comprehending? Lots here cried and bellyached the team needed this kind of played, well here you go! 8 GA in 12 games averaging 7:30TOI. That’s uniquely awful.

That is a made up condition. If he were, I wouldn't be so happy.
What? He’s been on the ice for 8GA and 0GF in less than 8:00TOI in a dozen games. What would it take for you to consider someone a boat anchor?
What is it that makes you happy he’s on the roster?
