Tanev is a bit like tenacious fore-check Hagelin and Kunitz kinda rolled into one. He might be a good 3rd wheel for Sid and Jake.

The thing that has shocked me about Tanev is that he can actually handle and shoot a puck. I said when we signed Tanev that from the games I had seen him play in, he was always playing in an offensive black hole in Winnipeg - he always generated so much energy and so many turnovers. I believe that opinion has been validated. He has had some real chances, and I know a few times some great saves were made. I'd feel comfortable playing Tanev with anybody on any line.

Full on left field....
Anyone heard if Justin Williams has made a definitive decision to quit?
Canes of course would be the overwhelming favorite if he did decide to take a final spin at a 4th cup, but there is a JR connect and it'd be cheap if he came in - say - after the holidays.

Can't argue his big game pedigree and leadership. Unless Gally catches some fire, I'd rather get an asset for him and take my chances with Williams when the war is on.

Of course at 37, legs can be all gone when he hasn't maintained himself like usual. Just a thought.

I love this idea, if (big if) Williams is still in shape. Skilled righty with a two-way game and willing to buy-in.

Meh the vast majority of players are totally washed up by 37... guys like cullen are extremely rare... I don’t think you gamble on someone like that unless you are in dire need of experience... which the pens are not...

As for gally, people are quitting on him too soon... the braintrust is going to give him a look on the top line and then another look with geno paired with rust after that... they aren’t going to cut bait with him as quickly as people here will.. Kessel struggled his first half here as well... in fact a lot of players took quite some time to acclimate...

Maybe he works out, maybe he doesn’t but it’s not going to be a snap judgment thing

I could see Hall being a Penguin by the deadline. Rutherford will not be able to pass it up. He’ll certainly try.

1st, Galchenyuk, middling prospect.

Maybe a 1st and Jarry, decent prospect. Not many teams will have a young NHL caliber goalie with potential to offer up, and Jersey needs a fresh face in net.

I just don’t see the devils trading him in the division in fear he resigns with whomever they deal him to...

The closer it gets to open market for guys like Hall and Kreider without them being re-signed, the closer I get to absolute certainty that JR is going to take a huge run at one of them. I'd love to have either here, and think it'd be fun as Hell, but I'd rather we put all our eggs in the "Letang's replacement in 3yrs" basket until we solve that mystery.

The only way he's a gamble is if you need him to come in and play a big role. If all you need/want out of him is a supporting role, it's not really much of a gamble.

I don't know that we're in a position to take the regular season for granted.

I'd agree we can't take it for granted this year but if we're talking trying guys on Sid's RW, I think it's the level of experiment/risk we can still do in the RS while taking it seriously but wouldn't want to do in the PS.

I think we are taking our shots at a cup as long as we are in a position to. The window is likely 3 years.

I cannot see JR going after Hall and giving him 11m a year. Kreider makes a lot of sense to me.

I'm not sure going after Letang's heir apparent is anything but taking a shot at the Cup though. Tanger misses a lot of time to injury, and as he gets older and they pile up, that's not going to get any better.

The more fun option is getting Taylor Hall for Geno's wing though.

I'd love to have Ehlers on this team. Absolutely no idea what the Pens could give up to get him. Probably nothing. Unless Riikola plays out of his mind? But then I think I'd rather re-sign him in that case.

With all due respect to Taylor Hall, he's not getting $11 million, imo. He'll get something around Geno's $9.5 million.

Yep... in most rankings he is listed as somewhere around 15th in nhl wingers...despite his hart... this isn’t a top notch hof level guy... he is just a star winger... he will get a notch above Kessel money due to inflation... still quite pricey though

I'd be surprised if Hall got less than $10 million. I don't think he's Panarin good, but I don't think he's much worse. I know it's a crappy way to evaluate him, but the fact that he has been on constantly bad teams should make teams leery of paying him an absurd amount.

If he gets 9.5 it's going to be because he left money on the table after years of being traumatized by terrible teams.
I think $9.5 million's probably right where he'll end up and it's right about what he should be making.

If he wants 11mil hes going to spend more years being traumatized by a terrible team, no top end team has that cap room.

Totally agree, I haven't made even the slightest judgement on Galchenyuk yet. Way to few of games to judge and I like his effort and play so far. I will give Galchenyuk some time to find a fit. I know if he doesn't work out Rutherford has the cap space to make a move for a player that will. I could see a Zucker type at the deadline or sooner if Galchenyuk does not work out.

Colorado have 28m free for next year and can probably shed a bit more. Not many important new contracts to hand out either. Carolina could probably make it work too.

I don't know that we're in a position to take the regular season for granted.
it's a win-win if we miss the p. o. it will be because we don't belong there and we will get a high pick and know where we need to improve/ trade .. ..and if by chance we do, we will know the best combo's we can play and where/who we should move.
