The defenseman of the Blue Jackets -Part Deux

If we're stuck with Wiz and with Murray already capable of taking up a good chunk of Johnson's minutes, I think they should look and see who we could get for a Gaborik+JJ package. Should be able to get a good young "top 6 scorer" and a legit 4-5 DEFENSIVE D-man. The issue is who and where would this work?

Nowhere. The cap issues and the no-trade clauses make it extremely unlikely, but even if you got around that, the only teams really interested in Gaborik would never give you a top-6 F back, it would be a win-now thing and they'd trade you picks and prospects.. Maybe if they reeeeeeally want JJ.

Stuck with Wiz and trade one of the better cap hits players in the entire NHL for what you get (hint - not Gaborik) so that we can give the minutes to a guy that's played less than 20 games?

Yeah, let's not take your suggestions.

Thanks,

Thanks,

I actually thought giving more of JJ's minutes to Murray was the good part of his proposal.:)

I'm loving our defense when you guys are talking about dealing Johnson and being stuck with Wiz (4th in points in the NHL among defensemen).

But he's top 3 in turnovers and just generally terrible at making decisions DEFENSIVELY all over the ice.

Did we get him to play on the top PK unit and shut down top forwards or did we get him to help the powerplay and produce points?

Actually he's #93 in give-aways among NHL defensemen, way behind Erik Karlsson and Andrei Markov. And surprise... JMFJ has committed more turnovers than Wiz.

This is an instance where I find stats less useful. If you use your eyes you know that Wiz routinely commits dangerous turnovers (though I think he's been better lately).

But a couple points where the stats come in handy: A lot of folks don't understand that Wiz is not much different from Karlsson, Subban, Letang, etc... All of them are very high-risk high-reward.

And for some reason or another only I and a few others can actually see JJ's give-aways. They're glaring to me but it's like some force-field went up or something and folks can see him do no wrong.

Do you have any other special powers that make you a more observant, more realistic and just plain better fan?

:amazed:

Let's see, off the top of my head. Karlsson & Subban have won Norris trophies, Letang has played on a Cup winner (although he probably wasn't the main reason for the win)

Sorry for the insult. (I was insulting others not complimenting myself.)

You do realize the writers would give the Norris to Wiz if he led the league in points by enough? If they took defending ability into account Subban and Letang wouldn't have been front-runners last year, probably Suter would have won it.

There's a difference between saying "they have similar playstyles with similar skillsets and similar consequences" and "they're the same and deserve similar accolades."

If Wisniewski routinely scored at the 0.8ppg rate he's on now, he'd unquestionably be in those sorts of discussions. As it is, we have to settle for 0.5 or 0.6 or so - which is still pretty damned awesome for a blueliner.

Hey, wait, you mean I was insulted? Damn, and I missed it. Now, I'm outraged!

Isn't it just outraging when you find out that you missed a perfectly good opportunity for outrage?

This JJ conversation is pretty damn silly. It's routinely discussed that he has flaws. It still doesn't deter from the fact that he's big minutes NHL defenseman. He's more mid-pack, but his cap his is great and we've proven we can win with him.

There isn't blinders, force fields, or whatever some of these people want to pretend exist.

As far as Wiz, he helps the PP. He puts the puck on net. He's doing exactly what we signed him for. As I said before his salary looks great after this season. We're heading to the cheap side of his contract. Thoughts of moving him now are just crazy.

With Murray and our pipeline; I feel comfortable with our defense for the next three years. Is it perfect? Hell no. Can we win with it? Sure.

I get the feeling Wiz is going to start trending, more and more, over his previous pace in years past as our team continues to improve.

It's kind of you to suffer the great unwashed. It must take a toll.

Clearly, it does:

Maj. Major Major Major: Sergeant, from now on, I don't want anyone to come in and see me while I'm in my office. Is that clear?
First Sgt. Towser: Yes, sir? What do I say to people who want to come in and see you while you're gone?
Maj. Major Major Major: Tell them I'm in and ask them to wait.
First Sgt. Towser: For how long?
Maj. Major Major Major: Until I've left.
First Sgt. Towser: And then what do I do with them?
Maj. Major Major Major: I don't care.
First Sgt. Towser: May I send people in to see you after you've left?
Maj. Major Major Major: Yes.
First Sgt. Towser: You won't be here then, will you?
Maj. Major Major Major: No.
First Sgt. Towser: I see, sir. Will that be all?
Maj. Major Major Major: Also, Sergeant, I don't want you coming in while I'm in my office asking me if there's anything you can do for me. Is that clear?
First Sgt. Towser: Yes, sir. When should I come in your office and ask if there's anything I can do for you?
Maj. Major Major Major: When I'm not there.
First Sgt. Towser: What do I do then?
Maj. Major Major Major: Whatever has to be done.
First Sgt. Towser: Yes, sir.

The year Karlsson won Norris trophy he was top-5 in the NHL in turnovers. Every year he's among leaders in that department. Norris trophy became a "midfielders" trophy a long time ago.
And l think if Wiz was in place of Letang the year Pittsburg won Stanley Cup that wouldn't have changed outcome.

Speaking of Wiz. People probably forgot that a left handed shot on power-play was one of the biggest Jackets problems for decade. That's why the Jackets were paying Duvie Westcott for many years. If you look around the NHL you will see at least 10 teams that would pay a lot for the skill set Wiz possess. Yes, he pisses me off making stupid plays time after time, but what he brings to the table is very important.
