Gone, maybe, but at the deadline only if we're out of playoff position. It's pretty easy to burn through 8-9 defencemen on a playoff run.

Not if Savard keeps playing like he is.

:p: Forgetting Melart too :shakehead

Way too many defensemen! Somethings got to give.

Savard & Nikitin are bottom pairing on this team.
Both in the final year of their contracts.
And neither has a chance at cracking the top 4.

Expendable pieces that could be packaged,
With a 1st rounder.

For what?

Also, why are all your posts formatted like bad haiku?

That's just how I type,
Never bothered counting syllables before.

For who? IDK, maybe a top 6 LW.
Jarmo will probably wait till deadline
To find out what teams are actually wanting to trade,
And what teams have a top 6 LW or prospect for trade.
As the deadline approaches,
I would guess...

IMO if they traded both Nikitin & Savard,
Which would give Golo, Melart, Erixon etc  some more playing time.
It wouldn't bother me at all.
I would actually prefer it.

Please, name me a single 3rd pairing NHL defenseman who would have been 2nd in time on ice on is team averaging 22 minutes per game.

Never understood the fascination on Melart. The dude is big and hits like a truck, but that's all he can do. He can fight sure, but do you want a defenseman fighting as your tough guy? Being down 5 defenseman constantly? Not me. He's slow, gets walked around, and has little to no offensive presence. He has potential, but he's not ready nor close, and if you hate Savard then you would find Melart abysmal.

From my POV,
Johnson, Wiz & Tyutin make up 3 of the top 4 dmen.
I think Erixon, Murray & Prout have futures here.
That's six defensemen.
IDC who the 7th, 8th, 9th...are
They will be used in a limited capacity anyways.

That's probably spot on for the future of our D.. But the fact is Erixon isn't ready yet. And Nikitin is good to fill in until he is.

what I saw of Melart at Camp was not so much he was slow, he had good positioning and drove the guy around the outside as offensive guy couldn't get inside of him to the net...he's not as much of a liability as you make it seem...

yes we have better options over him...

Now I can't read these without trying to make them rhyme

or smoking a clove cigarette

But it would bother me if they traded both Nikitin and Savard. I personally think Nikitin will have a good year.

Erixon isn't ready yet? He was steady last year. Many of us were surprised two weeks ago when he was the one left out of the lineup.

There was also a point during the preseason when he was at practice with a full cage on. As far as I know, we never heard why, but that was a bit odd.

Nikitin just played his way back in the lineup by not even playing.

Glaring mistakes all around by the blue line. 3 GA and all were off unforced mistakes/turnovers

Its time to sit Prout. I loved the guy last year, but aside from the game vs Buffalo he hasn't been good.

I never thought Prout was that good last season, just the best of the worst. I was shocked that they just handed a spot on the roster this season.

It's still very early but the so called strength of the Jackets, defense, was not good yesterday... Richards needs to get some advice on parings and starters... however, the team won't win many games scoring just one goal either...

I think our defence has been looking sharper as we get into the year. Tonight was good but not great to my mind. Prout still isn't back to last years level but he had one great breakout where he protected the puck and quickly skated it past several Bruins checkers, which is no easy feat. To my mind that's what makes Prout effective when he's on his game, we just need to see more of it.

D not as sharp as might have been expected. BUT

Observations:

Tyutin was playing his first game, which meant two of the three pairings were new. The four days of practice did not include Tyutin and the new pairings

Prout for as good as he was last year, still only has 47 games played in the NHL, including this year! AND... He missed so much to start the year.

Murray/Wiz is still a work in progress.

While injuries and pair shuffling s are a part of the game, it would seem to me that we can expect things to get better.

Erixon is certainly making a case to play his way back into the lineup isn't he?

There has to be a move made at some point if Erixon keeps playing the way he is. You can't keep him buried in the AHL and we can't keep 8 on the big club.

Savard has been a surprise but with the way he is playing, he's earned his spot too.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I think Savard being "surprisingly good" is still not as good as Erixon. I think Savard's been so-so, and they're keeping him up here to show him for a trade.

I think you're wrong.

I believe it is the responsibility of the front office and coaching staff to field the team that has the best chance to win. To play someone solely for the purpose of "showcasing" them for a trade and by doing so decreasing the team's chances to win is counterproductive.

After all the discussion and public pronouncements of the current FO about accountability, it doesn't strike me as something they would do. The coaching staff has said from day one that Savard has earned his spot. Why do you have such a hard time believing them?

1. Because to my eyes Savard looks nowhere near as good as Erixon.

2. Because I would showcase Savard if I was in their position, and send down the waiver exempt player.

3. To my knowledge it is exceedingly rare to non-existent that a coach or FO has ever admitted that they are "showcasing" a player, yet everyone agrees it happens. Public pronouncements are not always true, as you know.

I think there's something to Savard having to clear waivers. Erixon getting beat out in tc, doesn't mesh with how last season ended.

As far as showcasing Savard, not real likely, but could be possible.

I was trying to find the article or quote Richards said about Erixon not treating practices as Richards would like him to. Something about practices are his "games," and Erixon not treating them as such. Did anyone see that? I can't find it on any of the blogs or articles.

Of course I (we) may be looking way too much into this and now that Tyutin is back, seven Dmen is what they will carry. Erixon being the odd man out because he actually got beat out by Savard.
