I'm only saying subbing him out because it's obvious that Wisniewski won't be subbed out due to his contract. Murray has been fine.

Outside of a couple of glaring mistakes, I actually thought Murray was good against Calgary. He acted as a fourth forward at times and showed his potential off nicely. Notice how quick he is on the ice, without looking like he's moving quickly? That's what separates him from the pack, and will make him a good defenseman.

You're saying you'd rather sub out Wiz than Murray, and Murray rather than any of our other defencemen, including Prout? Or is your overriding goal to break up Wiz-Murray? Because there's other ways to do that.

In defence of Wiz's play, he can take a chance when you really should, and that's something that's been coached out of most defencemen. I just watched the end of the Jets/Ducks game, and the Ducks were ahead by a goal with a minute left, playing their unusually aggressive forecheck that prevented the Jets from reaching center ice to dump it in. Instead of doing a full regroup or taking a chance on a pass, the Jets QB's just kept circling waiting for a safe play, until time ran out. It was dumb, but pretty much what you should expect if you do what your coaches tell you. Wiz has the opposite problem- he can't turn the gambler off.

Now of course, the implication is that Wiz should be reserved for such an offensive role, and we all seem to agree with that, except for coach Richards. (And weirdly the corsi / analytics people think Wiz is our best defenceman.)

I'm not really one of those people but I'd say Tyutin is up there, and little better imo.

It seems like we have a ton of gambling puck movers (Wiz, JJ, Murray, several of the other young guys), but not a ton of stay at home defenders at the NHL level (other than Prout, who I agree could use a rehab stint in Springfield).

What would people think about bringing in someone like Braydon Coburn for some of our depth? I know he has a fairly significant contract, but I can see him doing well beside JJ or Murray where he isn't forced into being a puck mover (as he was last year). To spitball, maybe something around Goloubef/Savard?

IHZ, maybe you should watch the game again, Prouter had a half-dozen bad turnovers all by himself, JJ had a bad one, Murray a bad one. How do I see this and you don't? Tyutin seems to be kind of bi-polar when it comes to turnovers, he played about six weeks at the end of last year where he was amazing at not screwing up. I wonder if you would notice.

Man, you just never give up, do you?

I have this crazy idea that someday Cody can be that kind of player. Would prefer not to move him.

Philly also needs good defensemen. I don't see them moving Coburn

We are gonna see a change in a player or two. My guess is Murray if he stays up. He is going to stay back and be super safe. Same with Nikitin. Johnson, Wiz, and Savard will be allowed to take risks while Nikitin, Murray, and Prout will play cover-up. Not sure where Tyutin and Erixon will fit in yet. But we have a coaching staff intimately familiar with the nuances of defending and a d-core with the ability to be flexible in style. Failing that, our forwards will be called on to compensate.

Being in Philadelphia, there has been a lot of murmurs about moving Coburn for younger, less expensive defensemen (especially with all the long term salary locked up). I think they're better off keeping him, but you never know with that team.

I agree not knowing where Erixon fits in, but I would like to see Tyutin paired with JJ when he's healthy. He's probably our most versatile defenseman, and can cover up for JJ's attacking style and play minutes in a lot of situations. I think Prout can be the solid stay home guy long term, but I agree with a lot of posters saying he's looked very rusty.

What a luxury, trying to decide which of a dozen defenseman (just a joke DSL) we have to sit or move... The defense is getting better from game one but imo Wiz and Prout need some work.. Murray needs work too but he's a natural and should be ranked no lower than 7th, he needs ice time.. Tuytin's return will help, I like Erixon and Savard for now with Murray getting ice time to adjust to the game... bench Wiz and rest Prout.

Basically, for now in Buffalo on Thursday, Major nailed it:

JJ-Tyuts
Murray-Nikitin
Erixon-Savard

I think Prout needs some time to get his game back. I think he and Wiz have looked like the weak links. Nikitin has played very well as has JJ and Savard has provided some good minutes and been pretty sharp.

It's two games in. I'd like to see what we look like 10 games or so into the season. it's too easy to pick on a single game or player right now. For example, I thought Murray was brutal against Calgary but you could also actually see he does think the game at a high level. I think he, like the rest of the team, was caught up in the speed.

I'm still concerned about the offense more than the defense and goaltending.

We don't actually play until Thursday. Wait for the lineups announced then before we start being disgusted.[/QUOT

It seems to indicate that he is not planning any changes so why not complain about that?

Seems like a change is needed or at least let Erixon out of the press box.

Either that or Tyutin is being eased into the lineup and so there's no rush? :)

Who will sit when Tyutin comes back tomorrow.

Aaron Portzline ‏@Aportzline 11m
#CBJ coach Todd Richards wouldn't say who was coming out of lineup for Tyutin, but did say it would not be David Savard. Could be a veteran.

Rob Mixer ‏@RobMixer 11m
Richards said they haven’t made a decision on who comes out of the lineup, but “Savard will play.†#CBJ

My Guess is that either JJ is hurt from the elbow or Mr Wiz sits on Saturday. Who knows could be Murray.

Looking ahead a bit, Erixon, Savard & Prout all RFA's at the end of the season. Nikitin a UFA. Assuming all three R's progress is Nikitin the odd man out? Or is one of the young guys trade bait? Interesting that we have a glut of serviceable (at a minimum) D-men.

Won't know that probably till at least halfway through the season. Let's hope they all perform well and make the decision difficult. Or that the offers make the decision easy (as in Holy Overpament :amazed:).

I think Golo is safe since they're not playing him.
Same for Erixon.
Savard and Nikitin are probably gone at the deadline.

IMO

Gone, maybe, but at the deadline only if we're out of playoff position. It's pretty easy to burn through 8-9 defencemen on a playoff run.
