I know the vast majority will disagree with me but I think we have a better defense today than we did yesterday.

Replacing Justin Holl with John Klingberg to me is a pretty big upgrade.

While neither is great defensively, Klingberg can make up for that with his ability to generated offense Holl can't do that.

Rielly Brodie

McCabe Klingberg

Lilly Giordano

Timmins.

I might be in the minority but I think that's a stronger group than last year.

It would have been nice to keep Screen but there is no way in hell I'd pay him what Nashville did.

Evaluating the impact of Holl/Schenn versus Klingberg is essentially conducting an apples to oranges comparison. The organization has replaced a one-dimensional defender with another providing a different dimension. Based on the composition of the blueline overall, I'd say it's fair to suggest an improvement was made since Klingberg's offence appears to be the greater need for the team.

Klingberg being heavily underrated here, guys a phenomenal PMD. Good skater, good passer. He's a 6'3 right shot D-man who can provide offence, averages 54 points per 82 games played.

Apart from Rielly we had little to no contribution from the blue line, this is gonna give us more breakout ability and offence from the backend. Especially with the skill/speed we have on our roster, I think he's a great fit.

Also it's July 2nd, Treliving is hardly done making the moves he wants to. Still a pretty good chance Nylander gets traded for another D-man, solidifying the D-core. Carolina just signed Orlov, Carolina absolutely has to move a D-man. Ideally I want Slavin, but I don't think the Canes even consider moving him, most likely Pesce. The deal just makes too much sense from both teams perspectives, but then again Carolina likes to hoard D-men so they might not move on from him.

Sign Hamonic and let’s see what we’ve got.

Losing Schenn hurts. We are marshmallow soft as currently constructed.

We could have significantly improved if we had landed Soucy too.

Klingberg is a massive upgrade on Holl. People can cite advanced stats that show X but there’s zero doubt that Klingberg’s analytics will significantly improve in this system. Pretty sure Holl had decent analytics and he was a train wreck on skates to my eye.

At least Klingberg is capable of elite offense.

I wanted to keep Schenn too, but 2.75 per year is to much
Considering that Schenn was their second best D man in the playoffs I don’t think 2.75 was too much. The problem was that leafs management wanted a puck moving D to feed the core 4.

every decision they make at this point is deigned to keep the core 4 happy. Shanahan and the core are running the team.

I really hope this is a sign of playing a new style of hockey. I’m tired of watching them play keep away with 8 eight passes in neutral zone.

I miss seeing speed, rush chances and aggressive forechecking.

Klingberg may work out, or he may be Barrie 2.0, and I still think we need a big physical 3LD (who can play…).

I don’t know about better or worse as of today. Obviously there’s a lot of things he does far better than Justin Holl. There’s also a lot of things he does worse.

Everyone is healthy, mccabe full season, lilly a littke older and more experience and klinberg no matter how you slice it is an upgrade in holl.

Also not impossible to think BT may add another via trade or ufa signing.

Rielly. Xxxx
Brodie. Klingerg
Mccabe. Lilly

Imo we need a better version of schenn to play with rielly and we should be in good shape.

With the AM/WN contracts not resolved its hard to spend money beyond this season. We are stuck with 1 year offers to fill the roster until we have a clear idea what we are paying Willy and AM34.
We could move Murray and Muzzins contract and overpay Bert, Domi or Dumba on one year deals
