Always have liked Hayton. Crazy that he’s still only 24. Miscast as a make-shift 1st line center in Arizona and snakebitten last year with that 4% shooting.

This seems like a bounce back to what his actual level is, a really nice 45-50 point, two-way middle six center. Will the offense ever be consistent enough to reach a true 2C level? That would be my question. I think he can be a good piece on a winning team though, for sure.

With where he is right now, though it's more likely than not it's all he'll ever be, he can "cosplay" as a 2C on a team that's lacking in center depth, and do okay in that role, which is the role he is playing for Utah this season and was doing in Arizona. On a decent team with actual center depth, he should be your 3C, but will bring a fair amount of secondary scoring in that role. His net-front presence will also buy the wingers on his line space to run amok, so he's great in that role on a power play unit.

However, if you ever have to put him at the top of the center depth chart on the first line, either your team is garbage or your team is suffering badly from the injury bug. That's not at all where he should ideally be.
