The defense is better today than it was yesterday.

Our D will be better at moving the puck, and better offensively. It will be softer, and poorer defensively.

I highly doubt it’s better than it was last year overall. At least so far.

But let’s see what else happens before jumping to conclusions.

Lol schenn being so overrated because we haven't had a dman who can throw a check. Schenn will get slower and slower. Signing him to what he signed woulda been a terrible signing. Our dcore right now won't start the season. I feel a trade coming soon.

Klingberg is better then Schenn too (offensively and defensively) but you wouldn't know it by reading hfboards
Anyone touched by leafs organization automatically sucks on hf boards lol. I'd bet on Klingberg to have an amazing season this season. Than all this fan base praising him and wanting him to resign lol.

I know the vast majority will disagree with me but I think we have a better defense today than we did yesterday.

Replacing Justin Holl with John Klingberg to me is a pretty big upgrade.

While neither is great defensively, Klingberg can make up for that with his ability to generated offense Holl can't do that.

Rielly Brodie

McCabe Klingberg

Lilly Giordano

Timmins.

I might be in the minority but I think that's a stronger group than last year.

It would have been nice to keep Screen but there is no way in hell I'd pay him what Nashville did.
Agreed on all counts.

I would've liked to keep Schenn as he seemed to work really well in our lineup, providing us something we sorely lacked since losing Muzzin. But I also wouldn't have paid him what he got paid.

But yes, I don't see this as a downgrade. If Klingberg can rebound after that disastrous year in Anaheim it could be great.

It certainly arguable.

Schenn was nice but in the end he was a bit piece. So is Klingberg. So was Holl.

This team needs a truely elite dman to compete IMO. How we get that, I have no idea.

We chose Brodie, Thornton, Simmonds and wouldn't trade Kerfoot over competing for Pietrangelo

That was the last one that became available.

I think you can honestly win with a Larkin or Aho type 1C if you have an elite group of defense for the most part.

We've had absolutely bonkers talent up front but defense has been craptacular and shows you can't win unless you get a great group.

Only 2 exceptions in recent memory, Pittsburgh without Letang and Carolina's defense back post-lock out.

The defence is not better then it was yesterday.

Holl and Klingberg are a wash at best and we lost Schenn.
Seriously? Just because you disagree? Look friends...I know it's hard to believe but not that long ago (2-3yrs MAX) Klingberg was seen as an All-Star and absolutely ELITE D man in this league.

Last year he was bad, for Anaheim, I'll give ya that. REAL bad.

Real good players have been known to have real bad years though. Especially on epically bad, rebuilding...Scratch that...TANKING teams. It happens.

Hows about we watch the guy play a little in the blue and white before completely writing him off? Cuz I've been watching him for years and honestly he has been better than Rielly for most of his career.

If he can shake off the stank from the last year or two, a LOT of you will be cheesed when we can't afford to resign him.

If Schenn was the reason why Rielly was so good in the playoffs, I'm betting we are not better. Our D is definitely softer and easier to play against today

Losing Schenn is a blow. He was worth every penny. This team doesn't know how to build a D-core period. I don't know who works this stuff out in Toronto but our D are always trash. Thank goodness they found perhaps a decent Goalie in Woll.

Sure will miss watching Screen on my TV Schenn

He makes outrages $ 2.75 M.

We can't afford that and pay Mitch what he deserves. Same with ROR @4.5 (not even half a Mitch) .

We need ELC players, otherwise not enough for M&M.

If your D core and your Tender are top 5 + have a passionate determined team with solid depth, you can absolutely win with a 10-20 ranked 1C.

Woll was actually a Lou acquisition. Kind of amazing that Dubas left this organization with literally NOTHING of note in regards to the most important position in hockey.

With the AM/WN contracts not resolved its hard to spend money beyond this season. We are stuck with 1 year offers to fill the roster until we have a clear idea what we are paying Willy and AM34.
We could move Murray and Muzzins contract and overpay Bert, Domi or Dumba on one year deals

Brodie should cover both of their extensions or be very close to it, this is not true.

Blah blah blah, sorry, the core 4 still here. Nothing else matters, they are not going anywhere. Sorry, don't mean to offend any posters here personally, but that's the way I feel.

I am surprised at so much Schenn love even if he did have a nice little run here.

This guy was almost done and out of the NHL not that long ago.
He found a way to hang on for a couple more years as a 6th/7th guy that spent a good amount of time in the pressbox even with the Canucks, yes the defence needy Canucks.

Now all of a sudden he is a reborn needed piece?
Triple his salary and with term for a slow at best bottom pair guy because he had a good couple of months here and everyone expects he would keep it up for 100 games per season?

These are the signings that kill teams and the ones that fans go wish we got that guy and then quickly say boy we dodged a bullet on that one.

If we get the Dallas Klingberg we come out way ahead and if we only get an 80% Klingberg we are still better off at 1 year than either Luke or Holl at multi years.

I can understand your point of view on Schenn. I mean his PO could have just been fueled by the excitement of getting a real shot with his old club. In other words he may have just been so fired up about the potential and the story arc that he played way above his head and will revert now that it's done.

Gio is a year older and lil has taken a step back and Sandin is gone. It’s undoubtedly worse

This defense is incredibly soft
And I don't know what Brodie looked like in the regular season, but he was a tire fire in the playoffs. He might have been the worst D on the team.

Who's going to take on either Tkachuk brothers in front of the net? We are soft as melted butter. We got 1 player to do the hitting & fighting for the whole team. As they are now, it's a wreck waiting to happen.

Dubas upgraded the D with aging vets and it worked short term, but the bill is due now. This is a very bad defense when Luke Schenn was your 2nd best player.

Aging vets?

Brodie is our #2 despite the playoffs and he is 33.

McCabe is 29 on a solid deal for 2 more years.

Liljegren and Timmins are solid young guys.

Rielly is 29 and on a solid deal.

Gio is old.

I only watched the playoffs this year and McCabe was awful. Muzzin was a key piece to the defense. He falls under the aging vet criteria.
