The defense is 1 piece away from being set.

So because he failed in a tough role we should pretend he succeeded?

19% of his starts were in the defensive zone, so every 5th shift he started in the defensive zone, no clue where you are pulling the 80% from.

He did not help out PK.

I've said multiple times I like him, I think he is good in a bottom pairing position and he was good in the regular season.

Maybe he was set up to fail, but he failed in the playoffs.
On hockey reference it says his dZS% this playoffs was 79.7% so I’m guessing that’s where it came from.

Not sure how it is possible (unless it is all situations and excludes the times he starts on the fly).

His breakdown was around 5% offensive, 10% neutral, 20% defensive, and 65% on the fly at 5v5.

80% of the time he is not starting in the defensive zone.

1/20 offensive start
2/20 neutral start
4/20 defensive start
13/20 on the fly

16/20 starts not in the defensive zone.

Doesn't seem like a big deal honestly.

Wasteland
a package that sends Lilly plus the other way..........
I think Leafs are going to be stuck with him unless they throw in another player(s) or prospect(s) and or even combination with picks as well. The question then becomes who would they want to replace him with that would fit salary they could afford. Let say Fowler is available maybe could get Ducks to retain 1.5-2 million off 6.5 contract. That's 4.5 or 5 and Liljegren is at 3. Would have to trade close to the 1.5- 2 million or more back to manage under salary cap. Let's say it's Kampf(2.4) or Jarnkrok(2.1) that would work but Ducks probably would want picks also. Wonder if 2-2nd picks added would be good enough.

that's what the plus is for, could be substantial if they need salary retained........

One preseason game, but other than Tanev they looked like their usual incompetent selves……

It's 1 game, and not even a regular season game It's a pre season game It's COMPLETELY worthless.

They didn't look good, I won't tell you they did.

But I'm not going to panic based off off 1 pre season especially when the projected #1 goalie played half the game, which I know was planned my point is that's how worthless this game was.

What do you think their biggest issue is on D?

Time, they need to gel.

They have 3 new players on D if you include Hakanpaa, theu also have an entirely new coaching staff, which means an entirely new system.

They need time to Gel.

If what you areasking me is who would I like to see replaced?

Lilly, I just don't think he's turned into what He was supposed to be, I'd like to see him packaged off at some point this year that to get somebody that bumps OEL down and gives the defense some real depth.

But that's December-March issue whenever the deadline is.

The immediate issue is just time.

You know a lot of fan reaction is about how bad they looked last night and they did.

But as bad as they looked last night and holy shit did they ever.

They still got it to OT.

Give it time let it gel.

No one’s panicking, just commenting in a forum, about hockey, thought that’s what this place is for, or are critical comment now banned………

you must be brand new here. NOBODY was more critical of them than me last season.

But that opinion was not based on the first pre season game of the year.

When It's time to be critical I assure you I'll be leading the charge.

September 23rd 2024 isn't the time.

Pretty much this.
3 new players plus a completely different system. Could really see it with the players who have been here the longest. Lots of times one dman was playing that soft zone coverage that was used under Keefe and the other dman was playing the new system. Its just habit if you have played 5 years of the same system. instincts take over. Got to give it about 15 to 20 games before we will really see this defense gel. The team overall played like it was still being coached like Keefe for most of the game. Going take some time and benching before this gets better.

As for the one defenceman they should be targeting Theodore in Vegas. Vegas is over the cap right now and long term they cannot sign him.
Something like

Theodore for Liljegren, Robertson and a 2027 first and a 2025 5th to Columbus for 50% retention on Theodore.

I'd be targeting Rasmus Anderson over Theodore because Anderson has term.

Rose colored glasses? FAR from it, I just don't see the point in being critical about games that are completely worthless.

At least save it for October 9th when the games count.

There's a lot of question-marks on defence:

Rielly, McCabe -- known quantities.

Tanev -- very hopeful, but question-marks remain due to age, injuries, and change of teams.

Liljegren -- known, but suspect. Will he ever be a reliable defenceman?

OEL and Hakanpaa -- question-marks over health and performance.

Benoit -- question-mark over small sample size. Is his breakout year repeatable? Is there room under the cap and on the roster with the additions of older, veteran defencemen Tanev, OEL, and Hakanpaa?

Timmins -- will he be demoted, traded, or lost on waivers? Does he have any value at all to the Leafs, anyway?

All other prospects and players under contract -- Niemela, Webber, Rifai, Kokkonen etc. -- none of them are very young, and will any of them get a serious look-see on an NHL roster here or elsewhere? Are they all a dead loss at the NHL level? Is there a viable path for development for any of them?

Another acquisition -- where does the cap room and roster space come from? Significant player moves would be needed -- how and where?
