Mitch could get 90 assists with the right LW'er.
Do people still care about what Mitch or Auston do in the regular season?
Leaf fans for sure do.Do people still care about what Mitch or Auston do in the regular season?
Imagine another goal scoring option on that line?
Ezactly. We watch hockey for fun, right? Has everyone forgotten?Leaf fans for sure do.
Yes, it is entertainment. That's what all of this is. Some people rest their lives on it for some reason, though.Do people still care about what Mitch or Auston do in the regular season?

I enjoy every single game and no one can tell me otherwise. He already has the best goal scorer in the world on his line, most wingers would kill to have his linemates.
Speak for yourself. I've been a fan over 50 years and I don't care how many points any players put up during the regular season, I just want the team to win in the playoffs.
Watching my team win in the playoffs, now that's fun. Maybe you've never seen it happen so you don't know but trust me, regular season points compared to team wins in the playoffs doesn't even register.
Well I know it's about the playoffs but you gotta make them first. So ya Leafs care and should.Do people still care about what Mitch or Auston do in the regular season?

Wow. Gary, I've been debating with you for years but I think this recent loss to the Habs hit you harder than I realized. All I have to say is that I think this team probably has more potential than any other in the last 40 years give or take. Some people just need to stop assuming that we are contenders until we are contenders. Hang in there brother.
Those game 7 loses must of had you dancing in the streets.
That's great, I'm happy for you.
The potential is there, I agree completely. As far as being contenders, man I've been saying for some time now that they are but what does that even mean? It's just another one of those vague, subjective terms that doesn't really mean anything when you get right down to it.
Why is it that this team that with so much talent is consistently less than the sum of it's parts in the playoffs? Why is it that when the stakes are the highest, we play our worst (I'm referring of course to our pathetic performance in deciding games which has made us the laughing stock of the league)?
It's a mystery but after so many years of failure, I think it's time to try some other approach. We couldn't even beat CLB or MTL so it's impossible to believe that this group is capable of going deep so what have we got to lose? And I don't mean give up, tear it down or whatever else people get accused of when they advocate for change, just trade one guy who has been just terrible in the playoffs, seems like a deer caught in the daylights when the pressure is on but would fetch us a huge return because he's a point producer during the regular season. It's just one guy but it would still be a pretty big move and send a message that the status quo of failure won't be infinitely tolerated.

I hear ya, I really do but I don't think that you trade that kind of talent away because his line gets shut down in the playoffs. If we could consistently put together the powerplay that we've seen dominate for long stretches of time I think that could be enough to make significant progress. We'll see.
I am speaking for myself.
If you choose to be miserable for 82 games knock yourself out. I’ll join the misery once the playoffs start. See you there.
Not going to happen, so why whine about it?
Bingo. I'm not happy with losing but I love this team. I watch 82 no matter who's on the team. Thankfully this generation it's Mitch Marner.I am speaking for myself.

...Point rumored to be signing 8 year 9.5 million contract. He signed his recent contract shortly after Mitch did in 2019. Mitch got 6 years at 11 (essentially), Point signed for $6.75 at 3 years...and his new contract will be 1.5 less than Marner. So in 6 years Marner will have cost 16.5 million more than Point.
Now he's rumored to be signing an 8 year 9.5 million deal and early too...he isn't putting management through a period of offer sheet rumor hell... like our guys? Oh well at least we got a personalized thank you letter from Marner.
Gonna be really hard to compete with greedy players. Guess we can hope Marner will be less greedy in a couple years (thankfully he rejected the long term contract)
I will be beating this horse until Marner is either traded or he suddenly lives up to his contract, which would mean a 120 point season essentially.
Marner has been below par in the playoffs for three years running, what better reason for trading someone could there possibly be? Part of the motivation for trading him is also our top heavy salary structure in the context of a flat cap, that obviously threw off the plans that Dubas had so it's time to adjust. Tavares can't be traded so it's either Marner, Matthews or both. Staying the course and hoping for the best seems a little bit naive at this point.
Good thing Brobrovsky took that discount because of tax benefits when he signed in Florida for 10 million per year until he's 37.Not sure what's funny.
9.5 is over 11 mil here if we wanted to give Point the same money.
We can never compete with Tampa when it comes to contracts.
People often forget this:
How Much Do NHL Players Really Make? Part 2: Taxes
If people think the tax thing is bogus just look at other leagues: Marlins' Christian Yelich finalizes $49.57M, 7-year contract
The deal contains a tax equalization provision should Yelich be traded, a specification first reported by Fox. Florida does not have a state income tax, and if Yelich is traded to another U.S. team, that team would have to pay the state income tax Yelich would owe for home games in that state. If he is traded to Toronto, the Blue Jays would have to pay the Ontario tax Yelich would owe for home games plus any difference if Canadian income tax is greater than U.S. income tax.
It's just life being a fan of a Canadian team. Not worth stressing over.
If Point was playing for a team with a similar economy to Toronto and got 9.5...then you have yourself a case.
